Chapter 392: Chapter 394: A Matter of Life and Death

The man, disheartened, was about to lift his foot and leave, when Shao He slowly stood up and called after him, "Wait a moment."

Immediately halting his step, the man turned and saluted, "Does Doctor Shao have another matter?"

"I have a money-making opportunity for you, but it is extremely dangerous. Are you willing to try it?"

Filled with hope, the man lifted his head and nodded without hesitation, "I am willing."

"You agree so readily without even knowing what the task is?" Shao He didn’t know if the man would still be willing to accept it once he disclosed the details.

With self-mocking laughter, the man replied, "What other choice do I have now? Any opportunity Doctor Shao provides is a way out for me."

He was aware that he had no means to resist the girl’s family in the Capital City; they wanted nothing more than to force him and his companion to leave the city.

But the man’s heart harbored a fervent passion; he was unwilling to give up the opportunity to achieve scholarly honors, and most importantly, he knew that if he took Lili and left the Capital City, they would undoubtedly be pursued and face death.

Therefore, his only option was to stay and take a chance, hoping for a brighter future.

"Come with me," Shao He felt that this was not the place to talk.

After leading him to a teahouse and securing a private room, they walked in, one after the other. This scene was just observed by Liang Rou.

She glanced coldly at the maid waiting on her and instructed, "Go keep an eye on the entrance."

"Yes, Miss," answered the maid respectfully and then slipped away discreetly.

Liang Rou, looking towards Shao He’s private room, had a mischievous smile curl on her lips.

Inside the room, Shao He slid the brewed tea towards the man, speaking indifferently, "Drink tea."

The man took a sip from the teacup and suddenly asked, "May I know what Doctor Shao requires me to do?"

"Why don’t you start with an introduction?"

"Well, I am from Jingzhou. Since childhood, I was engaged to a proper family, but my family fell into hardship. I had no choice but to come to the Capital City to seek the marriage arranged in my youth. At first, I believed the family would honor the promise, only to find it was but a cover for the Liang Family’s legitimate daughter and her cousin’s scandal," he sighed as he spoke.

Shao He continued to inquire, "What is your name? What did you do before?"

"My name at home is Luo Cheng; my father was a blacksmith, crafting all manner of bows and weapons, but I had no interest in such things, hence, I am not as skilled as my father."

Shao He’s eyebrows raised slightly, "I need you to help me transport a consignment of medicine outside Changzhou City, but there might be some dangers en route."

After listening to Shao He, the man’s eyes flickered and he fell silent for a moment before asking in a low voice, "May I know the value of this merchandise?"

"It’s not worth much money, but it can save many lives," Shao He stated in an indifferent tone.

The man gasped in surprise, "Then... how can I ensure I will safely reach Changzhou alive?"

He quickly realised that these medicines were likely being sent to the soldiers in Changzhou.

Fully aware of his own limitations, although he had participated in many scholarly examinations, those were matters of elegance; when it came to fighting enemies, he was inadequate.

Shao He curved a light smile and replied, "That’s simple, I will arrange for the Hidden Guard to escort you. If you encounter danger, your first thought should be to run."

"I must remind you that the journey will undoubtedly be fraught with grave dangers, and you should be mentally prepared," Shao He finished, picked up her teacup, gently blew on it, and took a small sip.

Silently deliberating, after a brief pause the man said, "It’s not that I don’t want to agree; I’m just worried about Lili."

"I can guarantee her safety. I don’t believe anyone would dare to break into the Fifth Prince’s Mansion."

Luo Cheng looked up in astonishment, seeing she was not joking, considered for a moment, and then stood and bowed, "I have no requests except for one thing I hope Doctor Shao can agree to."

"Speak," Shao He gestured with the teacup in hand.

"If I cannot return alive, I hope Doctor Shao can ensure Lili is well protected for her whole life." Luo Cheng felt this was his only chance; whether he succeeded or not, at least Lili would be safe, which would give him some peace of mind.

Shao He pressed her lips together and nodded, "I can promise you this, but I would prefer that you come back alive."

"When do we leave?"

"Return and wait for my message. I will send someone to inform you when the time comes," said Shao He, standing up to leave.

As she pushed the door open, she suddenly noticed a sneaky figure in the distance, which looked very familiar.

She walked over and grabbed the person trying to flee.

"Is it you?"

"Yes, quite the coincidence, isn’t it? I didn’t expect to see the Fifth Prince’s Consort meeting secretly with another man, and here I am, witnessing it all. Do you plan to kill me to silence me?" Liang Rou didn’t conceal her character, mocking directly, her eyes deliberately drifting toward the man behind Shao He.

"You should go back first; I have matters to attend to," Shao He told Luo Cheng, who was behind her.

Luo Cheng nodded and turned to head downstairs.

Seeing the man about to leave, Liang Rou immediately screamed, "You... huhuhu... you."

Shao He grabbed Liang Rou into the room, pushed her towards the window, clutched her throat, and pressed outward, threatening, "Do you wish for me to push you out from here, Miss Liang?"

Liang Rou, looking at the height, began to feel fear in her heart, worried that Shao He might indeed silence her by killing her.
