Chapter 284: Chapter 285 The investigation is still ongoing Chapter 284: Chapter 285 The investigation is still ongoing The matter quickly reached the ears of Jhiang Yijia. Upon learning about the incident at Anji Hall where silver was found in insufficient amounts, she immediately returned to her parental home to inquire.
As the maid brought the tea, Jhiang Yijia couldn’t even take a sip before she anxiously asked, “What exactly happened? Why was there a shortage of silver found in Anji Hall?”
“The matter is still under investigation,” Jhiang Ming said with a clearly troubled expression, his brow furrowed as if encountering some difficult issue.
“Father, have you found out anything yet?” Jhiang Yijia asked anxiously.
Jhiang Ming glanced at his daughter and stopped himself from speaking; he did not want his daughter to get involved in this matter.
“Not yet.”
Knowing her father’s character, Jhiang Yijia thought hard and decided to first probe her mother.
“Father, is Mother in the mansion? I haven’t seen her in a long time and would like to chat with her.”
“Your mother is currently in the kitchen. Hearing of your return, she is making your favorite pastries,” Jhiang Ming replied truthfully.
Upon hearing this, Jhiang Yijia stood up and bowed to her father: “Thank you, Father.”
Then she headed to the kitchen. As she stepped in, the rich aroma greeted her.
“Mother, you’re making osmanthus cake! It smells wonderful,” Jhiang Yijia said with a smile, taking a piece to taste.
Lady Jhiang looked fondly at her daughter, her face bearing a kind smile as she gently said, “If you like it, eat more.”
“Mm-hmm.” Jhiang Yijia nodded vigorously, continuing to nibble on the osmanthus cake in her hand.
After a moment, she put down the pastry in her hand, raised her eyes to her mother sitting across from her, and asked with concern, “Mother, is Father in some kind of trouble? Why does he look so worried and upset?”
Lady Jhiang sighed and shook her head: “It’s nothing serious, just…”
She paused, looking at Jhiang Yijia and softly said, “It’s still about the issue of those few pieces of underweighted private silver discovered at Anji Hall.”
As Lady Jhiang kneaded dough, she breathed hard and said, “This matter is probably not as simple as we thought.”
“But this was personally arranged by the Emperor, and Father couldn’t refuse it. No wonder he seems so troubled,” Jhiang Yijia pondered for a moment before asking.
“Exactly, today your father received a series of evidence from a beggar, directly pointing to the Fourth Prince and apparently involving the Fifth Prince as well,” Lady Jhiang sighed softly.
“So that’s it.”
Jhiang Yijia now understood why her father had such an expression; it was not merely because he had accepted this unpleasant task, but also because he was well aware that he had been drawn into the conflict among the princes.
She was uncertain about how to extricate herself; she put down her pastry, gathered her skirts, and ran outside.
Seeing her daughter suddenly leave, Lady Jhiang shouted worriedly, “You’re already a mother, yet you still act so impulsively. Be careful not to fall!”
When Jhiang Yijia returned to the hall, her father was no longer there. After asking the servants of the house, she learned that her father had been spending recent days in the study, locking himself in all day and refusing to come out.
“Father, may I come in?” Jhiang Yijia arrived at the door of the study and knocked.
The door soon opened, and Jhiang Ming looked surprised to see his daughter outside, “Weren’t you looking for your mother? How come you’re back so soon?”
Without explaining, Jhiang Yijia entered the study, saw the silver on her father’s desk, and sat down asking, “May I see the evidence the beggar brought today?”
Jhiang Ming’s eyes showed surprise, but he soon understood and sighed, saying, “You shouldn’t get involved in this matter since you’re already married out. It’s better not to participate, or the Fang Family will suffer as well.”
“Father, I am also a child of the Jhiang Family. No matter when, this is my home. Show me the so-called evidence first,” Jhiang Yijia insisted.
She knew Shao He and Pei Huaian had a deep connection and wanted to help them; even if she couldn’t help, they deserved to know that someone was scheming against them.
Seeing his stubborn daughter, Jhiang Ming eventually couldn’t resist and threw the so-called evidence in front of her.
He sighed lightly and said, “The evidence is complete, and no flaws can be found, but I cannot afford to offend people involved, so I have to put it aside for now.”
Looking at the so-called evidence, Jhiang Yijia immediately realized that it clearly involved the conflict among the princes.
The evidence recorded everything, clearly pointing to the Fourth Prince, and even subtly implicating the Fifth Prince. Privately minting silver was a serious crime, and the Emperor would not let anyone off easily, whether prince or commoner.
“The person behind this is truly cunning and duplicitous, wanting to kill two birds with one stone, pulling down the Fourth Prince while tarnishing the Fifth Prince’s reputation. It’s indeed a clever move.”
Jhiang Ming, seeing his daughter’s expression, frowned and said, “You must not intervene in this matter.”
“Father, that is something I should say to you. You should set this matter aside for now and not act rashly, to avoid endangering yourself,” Jhiang Yijia said.
She was no longer the humble and timid girl of the past, but had grown up to be a pillar for her parents, no longer hiding behind them, continually protected.
“Jhiachild, you must not act rashly, this matter is not trivial, and you must not involve the Fang Family any further,” Jhiang Ming earnestly advised.
