Chapter 159: Razial Surprised Her
From the moment Lotus had discovered that it was Stephanie who had doomed their sister, she could hardly control the urge to strangle her.
But for Cassandra’s sake, Lotus had to keep her tongue in check and not let her find out that they were onto her.
"Not your business, Stephanie," Lotus hissed at her as she climbed down her mare.
Stephanie lazily peeled herself off the wall of the stable. Donning a black gown as if she was forever in mourning, she taunted her sister and her companion.
"Picking up Cassandra’s leftovers?" Every word emphasised to make it stand out. She flipped her hair back with a casual movement of her hand.
Lotus lost it at the insult, she flared up like a log in hearth. Her powers shot out of her in the form of a thorny vine and it wrapped itself around Stephanie’s neck. The thorns pierced her skin and elicited a scream as blood oozed out of several places.
In retaliation, her own murky shadows erupted from inside her like several claws ready to attack and puncture holes in Lotus’s fragile skin. To draw out blood and cause maximum pain.
But a body-length shield of ice, with hues of icy blue, instantly formed in front of Lotus, shielding her from the shadows of the night. They collided with it and recoiled, attacking again but failing to break through.
The ice seemed to have descended in Razial’s eyes and veins as he hit Stephanie with a blast of cold whirling air tornado. It knocked the breath out of her as she was hurled back and almost collided with the back wall, her shadows retreated and cushioned her fall.
Lotus’s vines backtracked as well, completely shocked by how Razial had stood up for her. She watched his back with enlarged eyes as he shielded her with his powers as well as his body.
"No one hurts Lotus on my watch," Razial icily spoke, his voice threatening, eyes coldly dancing.
Stephanie clutched her throat as she loudly coughed, the blood trickled out of her wounded neck. She groggily got to her feet, placing her hand on the wall.
Throwing her head back she began to laugh like the crazy woman she was.
"What a hypocrite you are. Now I understand why you never made the effort to defend Cassandra from me and wished her gone. You two were tangling under the sheets," she accused, pointing her finger at them.
Her eyes dangerously blazing, her shadows becoming pointed at the tips, ready to impale Razial.
"Watch your mouth, Stephanie, before I make you lose your tongue," Lotus threatened, her tiny frame shaking from rage at the baseless accusation Stephanie had thrown their way. She knew her sister would destroy their reputation in mere seconds; not only that, but their father would punish Razial relentlessly. As much as he was fond of his right-hand man, Razial didn’t hail from a high-ranking mage family.
He was chosen because of the power he possessed, he had extraordinary control and defeated all the other candidates in the arena when he had taken part.
Tholarian admired talent, and Razial had been raised in the palace; his father was the second-ranked Commander before him, so he followed in his father’s footsteps but rose higher.
But Lotus knew he would never choose Razial as a life partner for her or Stephanie. He only did that for Cassandra because he believed she wouldn’t be able to secure a proper match or could be given away to form alliances.
Lotus was his golden child, the one he was saving to strengthen his alliance with other Mage Kingdoms.
This act of heroism by Razial and Lotus was going to cost them dearly.
"And that was a mistake I will regret my entire life. I didn’t even know you were hurting her. Never thought you could degenerate into such a pitiful woman," he spat out, his hands forming vaporised ice, ready to blast Stephanie if she dared attack Lotus again.
"You didn’t know because you were busy chasing Lotus. Your eyes were reserved only for her. No matter that you were always miserable," Stephanie barked again, her eyes flipping between the both of them.
Lotus’s cheeks warmed at this, anger gripped every muscle in her body.
"Not again though. I will not let you harm Lotus or Cassandra anymore. I will protect them both even if I have to lose my life," he boldly declared, and Lotus’s disturbed eyes wavered at the man so relentlessly guarding her.
How he had stepped up, she had never imagined for him to. She knew he was trying to prove himself but his actions were indeed speaking louder than his words.
Stephanie laughed again as if Razial had cracked a joke. She thought that Cassandra was dead and they being unaware of the fact gave her evil mind a reason to feel superior in that regard.
"Wait till I inform Father of these late-night excursions. I wonder what prospects will remain for you, Lotus, once people find out you are not even chaste anymore. That you have been spreading your small legs for the commander."
Lotus had to fight back an ironical chuckle.
"Oh! Please, not everyone is shameless like you. Only you are the one who didn’t remain chaste, don’t you think I knew about you and Kamyn’s entanglements?" Lotus retorted back, not backing down from this fight.
She wasn’t going to let Stephanie blame them for something they hadn’t even thought about, let alone do it.
Stephanie snarled, her shadows attacked only to be dispelled by Razial and Lotus’s combined power. The vines formed a barricade, and ice coated them, strengthening them and making it impossible for the shadows to break through. Some of the attacking shadows froze and backed away.
"Leave Kamyn out of this. That low lifer killed him. Soon, very, very soon, I will have his head on a spike. Not only that, I have a little surprise for both of you. The one that will part the ground and engulf you whole. Just you wait," she barked like a feral bitch before running out of the stable, knowing she couldn’t defeat them with her powers.
They both understood what she had meant about the little surprise, she was referring to Cassandra and they hoped that Siroos wouldn’t walk into a trap.
Razial instantly turned to face Lotus. The worries had dulled out his face.
"Are you hurt?"
"I am fine, you shouldn’t have gotten involved. She will blabber to Father, and you will land yourself in trouble," Lotus answered, her head shaking.
"I will handle your father. If it comes to anything, we will leave. Besides, I don’t think our destiny is here, it’s out there as we saw in the prophecy. So come what may, I will stand by you, Lotus." Razial gently held her shoulders and she upped her gaze to meet his tender one.
Love and warmth she found there, the droopy eyes he gave her spoke volumes and Lotus could only engulf the saliva forming in her mouth.
"I appreciate that but we will have to be prepared for the worst now. Both of us will be dragged," Lotus added as Razial guided her towards her room.
He wasn’t the least bit worried, though; in a very long time, he finally had clarity on his actions.
