Reborn As Cursed Alpha's Mate -
Chapter 139: The Pain And Regret
Chapter 139: The Pain And Regret
He instantly reached out and grabbed her wrapped body and pulled her into his embrace.
"Ara!" Her name was painfully torn from his trembling lips. The emotions drowned out any other words he wished to utter.
The tears tumbled out of his amber eyes. How could anyone be so cruel as to kill someone as innocent as her?
"I—am so–rry," his voice came out broken, ladden with his emotions.
Everyone had fallen silent around him, watching him break down with teary eyes. Faris, they knew, hardly ever cried or wailed like that. He had always smiled and teased, keeping the pack together with his humour and mischievous ways.
"Faris!" Ranon patted his shoulders glumly but didn’t halt him. He needed this closure.
Haylia stifled a cry while Tara held Lana as both of them silently shed tears at the loss of their friend.
Ara’s mother was the one who had to hug Faris and comfort him. He finally let her go at her request and she was placed back down. Faris gently rubbed her chin and removed the black line she wore to indicate she was unmated.
He should have given her his colour a long time ago, not considering the consequences. She was gone now and all Faris was left with were regrets.
How expectantly she had asked for him to be hers. And what had he done in return? Flirted with any and every woman he found, openly and in front of her.
Ran after someone he had never met and only scented.
Now that he thought about it, it seemed like he had been distracted to run after her, leaving Ara and Cassandra behind.
The tears of shame wouldn’t stop leaking from his eyes.
His head swivelled to Ranon and he demanded. The tears still lingered on his cheeks.
"Who? Who dared do this?"
Ranon hauled him away so their women could tend to Ara and began the burial rituals. He didn’t want others to hear as well what he was about to reveal.
"We don’t know. Alpha found her like that and Luna is missing. Someone took her, they are all looking but there are no traces so far."
Faris gasped, clutching his head in his hands. The portal, that fox was somehow involved. She had halted at an exact time and opened the portal to vanish inside it. Could it be she was working with someone and they also used a portal to take Cassandra away.
Faris then explained everything to Ranon and both of them drew the same conclusion. They wondered who could be behind the attack. "Clearly, Ara was just collateral damage; they wanted their hands on my sister-in-law. The word must have leaked that Siroos was incapacitated."
Faris slumped against the wall, hiding his face in his hands. He was bawling like a baby again, his body rocking from the emotional storm residing inside of him.
The guilt of leaving them alone and running after his mate, or so he thought was devastating him.
"It’s natural to follow the instincts and chase after your mate, you couldn’t have known that something like this would happen." Ranon squatted in front of him, trying to pry away his hands which covered his face while speaking.
"Guards were just a few meters away, no one saw or heard anything, until it was too late."
Siroos walked inside and took in the atmosphere; his fiery gold-tinged eyes found his brother, and he strode towards him.
Ranon stepped back, seeing his Alpha approach, letting Siroos take that position.
"Faris!" He lightly touched Faris’s knee, seeing how vulnerable his brother was at that moment.
Hearing his brother’s voice, Faris threw himself in his brother’s comforting arms and began to hiccup.
"I am sorr–y, it’s my fau–lt. I left the–m alone, chasi–ng my mate."
Siroos embraced him, rubbing his hands behind his back. But the last words had Siroos stiffening. Did he find his mate?
"Faris! We all make mistakes. I am not going to blame you. But we need to get ourselves together, there is an enemy we don’t know anything about and they have taken a life and abducted Cassandra. We need to get her back."
Faris separated from his brother and wiped the tears with the back of his hand, he then sniffled and revealed the events of the night.
"A portal? Then that fox was working with whomever is behind this abduction. Because when I awakened, Cassandra was being dragged inside a very similar portal, her mouth was tied with some fiery threads. It is very much possible that fox is not your mate and a similar potion was used by them, the one they used on me."
Siroos contemplated. The rest of the Elder Council he had sacked might know who the mage was and that could lead them to the culprit behind this abduction.
"I am afraid that’s the truth. They just wanted to distract Faris so they could get to Nissa. The thing with portals is they can instantly transport one to the other part of the world. We don’t even know where she has been taken." Ranon added, frustratedly rubbing the light stubble that had grown on his face.
His words held bitter truth which stung Siroos in his heart but he refused to succumb under the pressure.
"We need a plan on how to approach this but first we need to bury Ara. See to it every requirement for her funeral is met," Siroos instructed, getting up.
"I will do all the rituals that a mate does for his female. I should have marked her and made her mine a long time ago. Mistake after mistakes I have been committing." Faris determinedly got up from his place and made his way to where Ara lay.
Ranon tried to follow him, to give him emotional support but Siroos put his hand up, making him halt.
"Let him mourn, Ranon. He needs this, we all need to mourn for we have lost one of the finest."
