Chapter 129: Chapter 124 Boasting About My Wife (Third Update)
Huang Lin, upon hearing that Luo Zhiming was coming to the city to work, was surprised to see him dressed so finely, and the cigarette he held was much better than the ones they usually smoked. He politely accepted the cigarette, and slightly incredulously asked Luo Zhiyong in a low voice, "Battalion Commander Luo, is this your younger brother who came here to work?"
Luo Zhiyong also knew Luo Zhiming was being too ostentatious, but since he was here, what else could he say.
He nodded at Huang and said, "Yes, I’m heading back to the army soon, you take him to the construction site to start work."
Upon hearing this, Luo Zhiming immediately frowned and asked Luo Zhiyong, "Big brother, do I have to start working today?"
Detecting his reluctance from his tone, Luo Zhiyong glared at him sternly and said coldly, "You came here to work, the sooner you start, the better."
Luo Zhiming was reluctant, mumbling a few words, "I just arrived today. It’s been a hard day’s journey by train. How about I rest tonight and start tomorrow."
Seeing Luo Zhiming acting this way, Luo Zhiyong’s expression darkened, and he looked at him with frustration, "No, either you go now or I give you the fare to go home, and don’t ever mention coming to the provincial city to work again."
Seeing the two brothers locking horns, Huang Lin stepped in to smooth things over, smiling and saying, "Brother Zhiming, you probably shouldn’t start working today. Rest well tonight, but you should get there early to familiarize yourself with the place and start working tomorrow. I’ve talked it over with my uncle."
Luo Zhiming was still reluctant, he looked at Luo Zhiyong and said, "Big brother, I was thinking of visiting your army unit. How about I stay with you for a few days and then go to work with Brother Huang later? A few days won’t make much difference."
"..." Huang Lin had just mentioned that he had arranged with his uncle to send people today, now with Luo Zhiming not going, he felt a bit troubled.
Luo Zhiyong, seeing Luo Zhiming’s disappointing attitude, got a bit angry, and pulled Luo Zhiming aside, saying coldly,
"You go to the construction site today. You can visit the army anytime later when you are on leave. But you cannot delay work. Brother Huang has already spoken on your behalf, how can you justify delaying for a few days?"
"It’s just that I’ve just arrived, new to the area, and I want to get familiar with the place before starting work, not that I’m unwilling to go," Zhiming, seeing Luo Zhiyong’s anger, shrank his neck in fear and muttered softly.
"You..." Luo Zhiyong couldn’t help but was about to curse him out, but seeing the crowd around, he sighed and lowered his voice to advise,
"Zhiming, you came out to work, so don’t be afraid of hardships; everyone who works goes through tough times. If there’s any difficulty, you can come to me, but you must do your job well. You’re an adult now, and there’s also your wife to support at home; you can’t be irresolute like before."
Actually scared of Luo Zhiyong getting angry, Luo Zhiming thought for a moment and then nodded in agreement, "Alright then, I’ll go visit you during the holiday."
Seeing him agree, Luo Zhiyong’s expression softened a little.
He reached out and fiddled with the many things Luo Zhiming carried, asking him, "Did you bring everything you need from home? If something’s missing, just buy it yourself."
Luo Zhiming’s eyes sparkled upon hearing this, then he shook his head and said quietly, "I don’t know what I need, everything was packed by mom and Xiu’er, and I didn’t bring much money."
Luo Zhiyong wasn’t naive and knew what Luo Zhiming meant by his remarks – he could give him money as long as he would work diligently.
He pulled out five yuan from his pocket and handed them to Luo Zhiming, "Here’s five yuan, use it to buy anything you need. If it’s not urgent, give me a call and I will have your sister-in-law prepare it for you, and I’ll bring it over when you are on holiday."
With the five yuan, Luo Zhiming felt much better, said no more, and followed Huang Lin away.
Huang Lin had driven there, originally intending to accompany Luo Zhiyong to pick up Fang Pingying, but now he took Luo Zhiming instead, leaving Luo Zhiming and Fang Pingying to take the bus home.
Men really do have more strength. Initially, the several bundles that were extremely difficult for Fang Pingying to carry, were now easily lifted by Luo Zhiyong with just one hand, while the other hand held onto Fang Pingying.
The train station was bustling, and Luo Zhiyong was worried that Fang Pingying might get separated in the crowd.
Public transport in Sheng City was convenient. They waited at the bus station for less than a few minutes before catching a bus.
The bus was not crowded, and there were seats in the back. They found a spot and sat down.
Fang Pingying had hardly slept the previous night and had also woken up early. She was made uncomfortable by the crowded train and, as soon as she got on the bus, she leaned against Luo Zhiyong and dozed off.
Luo Zhiyong tenderly looked at Fang Pingying asleep on his shoulder, a touch of distress flickering in his eyes. He wrapped his arm around her to make her sleep more comfortably.
After about an hour on the bus, by the time they reached the military camp, it was almost dark. Luo Zhiyong gently woke Fang Pingying, saying, "We’re here, get off first, you can go back to sleep later."
The bus station wasn’t far from the military camp, after a five to six minutes walk, they arrived at the main entrance of the camp.
The entrance of the camp looked just as Fang Pingying remembered, unchanged, even the two guards seemed to be the same ones from a past life.
Seeing Luo Zhiyong, the soldiers saluted, and he returned a military salute before taking Fang Pingying back to the military dependents’ quarters.
Luo Zhiyong’s home was on the second floor. As they went upstairs, they happened to meet the family of Huang Lin from downstairs whose door was open. Huang Lin’s wife, Xiao Juzi, was sitting at the doorway, laundering clothes.
Xiao Juzi had probably heard from Huang Lin that Luo Zhiyong was picking up his wife today. Seeing the two of them, she flicked the water off her hands and greeted Luo Zhiyong with a smile, "Camp Chief Luo, so this is your sister-in-law."
"Yes," Luo Zhiyong replied, then softly said to Fang Pingying next to him, "This is Huang Lin’s wife, the one who just sent Zhiming to the construction site to work."
After hearing this, Fang Pingying gently smiled at Xiao Juzi and said, "Hello, it must have really troubled your Huang Lin today."
Xiao Juzi was clearly a city girl, dressed neatly and exuding refinement.
But she was straightforward and waved off the thanks, grinning, "It’s just a small matter, no need to mention it. He’s off today and would just be idle either way."
Luo Zhiyong also seemed familiar with Xiao Juzi. He smiled lightly and said, "Yes, with that lad Huang Lin, I won’t stand on ceremony."
While Luo Zhiyong spoke, Xiao Juzi kept sizing up Fang Pingying.
Then, she laughed and said to Luo Zhiyong, "Camp Chief Luo, how old is your sister-in-law really? She looks much younger than you, almost younger than me even."
Luo Zhiyong was pleased inside whenever someone complimented his wife, but he just smiled and said, "She’s about the same age as you, looks young for her age."
Actually, Luo Zhiyong’s tone wasn’t really praising Fang Pingying, yet unknowingly, this comment was probably the best compliment a woman could receive.
It made both Fang Pingying and Xiao Juzi laugh.
While laughing, Xiao Juzi added, "Who says Camp Chief Luo is a stern guy? I think his skill in pampering his wife is as good as our Huang Lin’s." (To be continued.
