After dinner at Grandpa and Grandma’s, the family of four finally returned to the police residential compound.

Unexpectedly, it was so late, yet people were still coming over for New Year visits.

With visitors bringing gifts, it was hard to refuse during the New Year festivities, so they prepared some items of the same or slightly higher value for reciprocity, firmly resolved not to take advantage of others. They didn’t lack money and certainly couldn’t make a principled error.

Early the next morning before they had finished cooking, visitors were already at the door, just like the day before. With each exchange, they made sure to give back a little more, hoping the gesture would be understood.

After eating and cleaning up, they called their teacher and his wife: "Hello, Teacher’s Wife, we’re coming back this afternoon and will stay at your place tonight."

The two chatted for a few more minutes before hanging up.

No sooner had they left the compound than the gossip started in the courtyard: "Director Lu’s spouse is too polite. The gifts they return are even more than what we brought, making us feel embarrassed."

"Same at my place, how are we supposed to visit during the New Year after this?"

"I guess they just don’t want people bringing gifts, but they can’t very well say it outright during the festivities, so they give back more to get the message across."

Overhearing this as she came out to dump water, Mao Yunshang’s eyes gleamed with a plan. If that was the case, she’d bring more gifts next time. Wouldn’t that mean she could get some extra items without cost? Her eyes were full of calculations.

Kang Huaiqing always felt his wife was off today, when had she ever been so generous and sensible? But since she insisted on making amends with Director Lu, he couldn’t refuse.

The couple carried the gifts out the door, heading straight for Lu Yichen’s house.

But they’d barely left the courtyard when Kang Huaiqing almost slipped: "Who the hell poured water out here, seriously lacking virtue."

Only then did Mao Yunshang remember her careless spill in her excitement: "Stop complaining and let’s go."
