Lu Yichen had mentioned it to her before, but at that time he had only said it was a possibility. She hadn’t expected him to take over so soon.

When Lu Yichen came back and mentioned the invitation to dinner, Luo Qiao said, "Let’s not go to a restaurant then, let’s just do it at home. It’s better to invite the decent folks over for a meal at home, to avoid giving people something to talk about."

Lu Yichen nodded and said, "Which day is good, then? I can help out too."

Luo Qiao thought for a moment. School was starting in three or four days. "Let’s set it for tomorrow at noon then."

Once the decision was made, after the two children had fallen asleep at night, the couple sneaked into the space. Lu Yichen helped out, and Luo Qiao cooked a big pot of ribs in the space, followed by spicy rabbit meat, sour cabbage fish, potato stew with chicken cubes, braised pork, and also sliced a basin of sausages.

Seeing that it was getting late, they finally washed up and left the space.

The two came out and Lu Yichen hugged her, whispering in Luo Qiao’s ear, "Thank you, my wife."

Luo Qiao kissed Lu Yichen’s chin, "What’s there to thank for? It’s what I should do. Yesterday, the three of us ladies went out and truly had a splendid time. Although the military medal is dazzling, I just wish for your future to be safe and smooth."

Hearing this, Lu Yichen held her tighter, kissing his wife passionately. Everything was so natural, and they embraced and fell into a deep sleep much later.

The next day, Rong Daniang came over early, bringing two big bags of ingredients with her.

With someone to take care of the children, the couple went out for a walk and came back with two big baskets of things as cover.

After Lu Yichen left for work, Luo Qiao let Rong Daniang take the two children out to the park while she began preparing the dishes alone.

Rong Daniang had intended to help out, but Luo Qiao smiled and said, "I prepared quite a bit yesterday. These two little ones need to be taken out for a stroll every day, otherwise, they won’t settle down."

Once Rong Daniang left, Luo Qiao got busy, washing the vegetables, knowing the guests had big appetites, so she prepared generous portions for each dish.

By the time Rong Daniang returned, Luo Qiao had mostly finished preparing the dishes. The cold dishes included celery with carrots and peanuts, spinach vermicelli, cold cucumber salad, sausages, preserved egg with tofu, and spicy chicken shreds.

Hot dishes included soy sauce spare ribs, spicy rabbit meat, sour cabbage stewed fish, potato stew with chicken cubes, braised pork, grilled eggplant, stir-fried green beans, mushrooms with rapeseed, mapo tofu, and scrambled eggs with tomatoes, topped off with a soup of fish balls and kelp.

The night before, Luo Qiao had prepared the dough and steamed two baskets of buns that morning; worrying it wouldn’t be enough, she also steamed a pot of rice just to be sure.

Around eleven o’clock, Auntie Liu came with two other sister-in-laws from the family compound, ready to lend a hand, but upon arriving and seeing that Luo Qiao had almost finished the preparation, they lavished praise on her.

Luo Qiao laughed and said, "I was afraid I wouldn’t manage today, so I started preparing last night. I’m just trying to get a head start, please stop praising me, or I’ll get embarrassed."

Unable to help much, they chatted for a while and then left together.

After everything was cleaned up, Rong Daniang returned with the baby, and Luo Qiao took off her apron to feed her child in the house. Maybe the baby was tired from playing, for after feeding, the baby fell asleep.

She quietly got up, cleaned the baby’s hands and face with a towel, covered the belly with a small knitted blanket, and then left the room.

In the kitchen, Rong Daniang was cooking green bean and millet porridge. "I saw you prepared fish ball kelp soup, but was worried some might not be able to consume it, so I saw the green beans soaking and decided to make some green bean millet porridge just in case," she said.

Luo Qiao smiled and responded, "It’s always good to have you think ahead, Daniang."

Shortly after the porridge was ready, Lu Yichen arrived back with guests. The place was packed, sitting two full tables. Once the dishes were served, the aroma filled the air, and everyone was surprised at how lavishly the district chief’s wife had prepared.

When Lu Yichen went into the kitchen to get chopsticks, he said softly, "You’ve worked hard, my wife."

Luo Qiao handed him the chopsticks and smiled, pushing him out of the kitchen, "Hurry and invite them to eat."

Luo Qiao had thought about checking on the children inside, but Lu Yichen pulled her to sit down, "Today’s dishes were all meticulously prepared by my wife. Let’s all together say thank you to her with this first cup."
