Chapter 713: Chapter 713: You Should Thank Him Personally
Luo Qiao laughed and said, "There’s leftover material in my yard from when we renovated the house, more than enough to make a bookcase. You don’t need to be polite with me."
Shen Juan laughed, "Then I’ll have to treat you to a meal later, I can’t just take advantage of you for nothing."
Luo Qiao smiled and nodded, "Alright, then I’ll take advantage and have you treat me to a big meal."
After they finished speaking, both laughed. It’s strange how fate works; they had only met briefly on the train, but now they felt like old friends.
After putting away their things, they all headed to the cafeteria. Passing by the public phone, Luo Qiao thought about calling her second brother. Xiao Ya had been dropped off at school by her second brother that morning, and she wanted to check how things went.
But remembering that everyone would be waiting for her, she decided it was better to call after dinner.
The variety in the cafeteria wasn’t as vast as it would be in later student cafeterias, but there were both meat and vegetable dishes. Luo Qiao got herself a portion of rice, half a portion of spicy shredded potatoes, and half a portion of braised pork. The cafeteria allowed for half portions, which was better than wasting food.
After getting their food, they found a place to sit. Apart from Mao Jiangping and Wu Hongyan, everyone got half a portion of meat and half a portion of vegetables. Yan Ruyue joked, "This is our first meal in the cafeteria, so let’s eat well to celebrate."
Luo Qiao just smiled without saying anything and started eating.
Wu Hongyan looked around and, seeing that aside from her and Mao Jiangping, everyone else had gotten a portion of meat, she said, "I’ve been having stomach problems recently, so I need to eat lighter."
Her comment left everyone speechless, and no one responded to her.
Mao Jiangping sneaked a glance at Wu Hongyan and, seeing only half a portion of stewed tofu in her bowl, felt a sense of relief. She had only taken a portion of shredded potatoes. Her attendance at school was made possible by her big brother working in a coal mine to earn her fare.
When she left home, her family had advised her to make something of herself, to not stir up trouble, to get along well with others, and to tolerate what she could.
After arriving at school and seeing her classmates who were also there to register, she felt an inherent sense of inferiority, so she tried hard to get along with everyone and avoid causing any issues.
When Wu Hongyan realized that her comment might have been unnecessary and saw everyone’s reaction, she felt somewhat embarrassed and began to eat.
Having spent more than half a day together, Luo Qiao had a rough idea of her dorm mates’ personalities, but it didn’t concern her much, and she didn’t dwell on it.
After dinner, Luo Qiao called her second brother, got Xiao Ya’s school’s phone number, and checked in on how things were going before hanging up and immediately dialing Xiao Ya.
Since the phone was far from their dorm, it took Xiao Ya a while to answer, "Hello, Qiaoqiao?"
Upon hearing Xiao Ya’s voice, Luo Qiao asked, "How’s it going? Are you adapting well?"
Xiao Ya, sounding excited, said, "It’s pretty good. When you have time, come over, and I’ll show you around. I’m really grateful for your brother’s help today; thank him for me, will you?"
Luo Qiao joked, "That’s between you two; I won’t interfere. You can thank him yourself."
The two chatted about trivial matters before hanging up the phone.
With that, they all headed to the classroom. In their class of forty-two students, there were twelve girls and thirty boys. The eldest was twenty-three, and the youngest was eighteen.
The class meeting, led by the counselor, the newly elected class president, and vice-president, lasted an hour and shifted everyone’s mindset.
By the time they left the classroom, it was getting late. Luo Qiao bid her dorm mates farewell and headed off-campus.
Upon reaching the school gates, she saw Lu Yichen standing beside a jeep, his posture stick-straight, the mark of a former soldier.
Luo Qiao jogged over to him, "What brings you here?"
Lu Yichen replied fondly, "It’s your first day of registration today, and I knew you didn’t have a bike, so I came specially to pick you up."
"Have you been waiting long?"
"Not too long. I knew you had a class meeting today, so I came over after finishing up some work."
They chatted as they got into the car.
"Tomorrow morning I’ll bike to school; I already asked Sister Xu to bring it over."
"How do you feel about the first day of school?"
"It’s okay. Most of the classmates are fairly easy to get along with. Besides, my master said that once I get adjusted, I’d start practical work with him and another professor."
