Chapter 591: Chapter 591: Sending Warmth on Winter Solstice
Kong Cunlai didn’t make a sound either; his heart was also feeling mixed. With so much money, even if he went to his work unit to get reimbursed now, he feared they wouldn’t believe him, and the expenses would have to be covered by the family.
Once he figured it out, he added, "Two thousand yuan to save your brother’s life is worth it. After all, we haven’t spent any less money at the hospital and still, the illness hasn’t been cured.
Okay, let’s head back. In a few days, I and Xiangrui will make a trip to their work unit to see if we can get reimbursed for some of it, since we don’t have any formal receipts."
Kong Xianglin ruefully said, "My mom sure enjoys the momentary satisfaction of talking big, but facing the consequences of paying up, she probably couldn’t bear the pain if she knew."
In the following days, Lu Yichen was so busy that he was working day and night. As to what case he was working on, Luo Qiao didn’t ask before; that day she woke up early to find the sky heavily overcast.
Grandfather Luo Daoren commented, "Looks like it’s going to snow."
Luo Qiao said to Zhou Guifang, "Grandma, today is Winter Solstice; let’s make dumplings. I want to send some over to Big Brother, Second Brother, and Lu Yichen, as Lu Yichen has been busy for four or five days straight."
Zhou Guifang glanced at the clock on the table and said, "Alright, then let’s make more and send them a good amount. In this freezing weather, invite their colleagues to try some as well."
Luo Qiao agreed, "Alright, I’ll go buy some meat from up front."
Zhou Guifang didn’t dawdle, starting to direct Grandpa to take out the cabbage to mince for the filling, while she herself began to mix the dough in a basin.
It wasn’t long before Luo Qiao returned from outside, carrying in ten pounds of meat, and proclaimed, "Grandma, let’s add some extra meat today."
Zhou Guifang remarked, "You really don’t hold back."
Smiling, Luo Qiao replied, "It’s a holiday today; we should treat ourselves well. My second brother and the others definitely won’t get to eat dumplings at school. With so many people there, it’s doubtful they’ll be able to make enough."
They made two types of fillings: cabbage with pork and chive with eggs, generously using ingredients, which made them smell delicious.
The three of them kept busy the whole morning chatting and laughing as they made six trays of dumplings. Cooking the dumplings in a big pot was quick. When they had moved previously, Luo Qiao had brought back many medium-sized enamel basins which also had lids, intending to use them for mixing cold dishes during festivals. Now, they came in handy.
Big Brother and Second Brother each took a basin. The enamel basin was large, half filled with meat dumplings and half with vegetarian. The cooked dumplings were easy to distinguish. She thought of letting Second Brother share it with the dormitory mates he got along well with, while those for Big Brother would surely be eaten with the Yue Family—hehe!
Lu Yichen got two basins, one with meat dumplings and one with vegetarian, thinking they could all enjoy a feast. Each was tied up with cheesecloth, then packed into a clean cloth bag and fastened to the bicycle.
To make things easier, Luo Qiao had brought out her women’s 26-inch bicycle from her space a few days earlier, making trips out more convenient after passing the main road.
Grandpa helped her tie the basins on the bike, and Grandma insisted she eat a few dumplings to fill her stomach. After she had eaten enough, Grandpa had finished securing everything on the bike.
She first found Big Brother and delivered a basin to the practice room, telling him to take it to the teacher’s place to share after classes. After making sure the instructions were clear, she hurried off.
She had to find Second Brother soon too, lest she missed him after his classes. Riding her bike to the base of the teaching building, she saw students starting to come out. Soon, she spotted Luo Xuyuan.
Perhaps there was some sibling telepathy, because just as Luo Qiao was about to call out, she saw Luo Xuyuan looking her way. She waved and called out with a smile, "Second Brother."
This call of "Second Brother" drew the attention of many of the classmates. Luo Qiao, dressed in a yellow corduroy coat, black straight-leg pants, and a pair of black leather boots, was wrapped in a camel-colored scarf that obscured her face, but her large eyes were clearly visible even without a closer look, revealing her beauty.
Worried that the dumplings might get cold, she said, "Second Brother, today is the Winter Solstice. We made dumplings at home and I’ve brought you a basin. There are chive egg and pork cabbage fillings. Share them with your dorm mates. If it’s not enough, you guys can order some other dishes to eat."
