Chapter 586: Chapter 586: No Way to Vent Anger
Over the course of half a month, he acquired one two-entry courtyard house, one three-entry courtyard house, and two single-entry courtyard houses—all of them quadrangles. It could be said that his harvest was exceedingly bountiful.
Afterward, the admission notices for Xu Shifan and his sister, Xu Yuqing, also arrived. As expected, they both got into Capital University, one studying accounting and the other finance.
Just as Luo Qiao had predicted, once their aunt learned of their residence, their grandmother and biological father had visited twice, probably hoping for some benefits. However, they found nothing in the yard except for a few pots and pans in the kitchen and the siblings’ meager bedding inside the house—it was pitifully shabby.
Perhaps feeling that there were no benefits to be gained, their visits ceased thereafter. Following this incident, the siblings’ relationship with their aunt grew somewhat distant.
Their aunt had come over to explain that she hadn’t intentionally disclosed their address to that side of the family, but Xu Shifan and Xu Yuqing didn’t believe a word she said.
Before the school term started, their aunt stopped visiting, and they were finally able to enjoy some peace. After that, they would come over occasionally to clean up but still lived in the two-entry courtyard house belonging to Luo Qiao.
After school began, they found tenants for the house, renting it to a family from out of town who had moved to the city for education. They reserved two rooms in the wing building for the Xu siblings to deal with the Xu family members and explained the situation to the tenants, asking them to help provide cover.
As days passed, Luo Qiao was helping her grandmother string up chili peppers in the yard one day. These were harvested by her grandfather from a plot of land in the forest and were too many to eat, so they strung them up to air dry under the eaves.
Hearing some noise at the front gate, she looked up to see Lu Yi Chen. His car was loaded with plenty of tender corn and pomegranates. Upon entering, he said with a smile, "Grandma, I came to see you."
Zhou Guifang continued working, "You say that, but you’re really here to bring something to that girl, aren’t you?"
Lu Yi Chen responded, "Grandma, don’t tease me. I was down in the countryside on a case today and saw someone selling pomegranates in their yard, so I bought some. I thought you might like them."
Luo Qiao saw that the pomegranates were quite large and thought of the seedless varieties from a future time. Noticing that there were still some peppers to be strung, she decided it was too much trouble to wash her hands twice and thought she might as well finish the work before eating.
Lu Yi Chen glanced at the peppers on the ground and walked over, "Why don’t you go wash up and eat some pomegranates? I’ll help you with the stringing."
Luo Qiao used her elbow to stop him, "There’s just a little left. Don’t get your hands dirty now. Grandma and I will finish shortly. Do you even know how to handle a needle? You’d just get in the way."
Seeing Luo Qiao’s resolute refusal to let him help, Lu Yi Chen gave up. He washed his hands, cleaned the pomegranates, went to the kitchen to fetch a bowl, and spooned the seeds into it.
He placed the bowl on the table and covered it with the mosquito and fly shield Luo Qiao had fashioned from a fine mesh. He had wanted to feed Luo Qiao a spoonful, but felt timid doing so in front of her grandmother.
Seeing that there really were only a few peppers left, he took the corn cobs from the back of the car, skillfully peeled them, and prepared to boil them shortly.
Zhou Guifang didn’t object, as she had grown accustomed to this. Over the recent period, whenever Lu Yi Chen had free time, he would come to the house to court her granddaughter. The sight of her grandsons helplessly simmering with jealousy amused her.
Aside from Siyuan, who could cook, the other three hardly ever set foot in the kitchen. Now that they met their match in Lu Yi Chen, whenever he came, they weren’t allowed in the kitchen and could only watch on in frustration.
After Lu Yi Chen left, the brothers would try to learn to cook in the kitchen, but none of them had any talent for it and eventually had to give up.
It served as a source of amusement for her and her husband.
Luo Qiao asked, "Is there still tender corn at this time of year?"
Lu Yi Chen continued shucking the corn, "It was actually quite lucky. On my way back, I ran into an acquaintance and stopped to chat for a bit. Shortly after, I heard someone yelling.
It turned out that an ox belonging to a villager had broken loose and trampled a patch of corn. They mentioned that the small plot had previously been used to store bricks for house repairs and was later planted with some corn.
I took a look and saw that the corn was pretty tender, so I bought some on my way back. You like tender corn, and it was also a good way to help the villagers minimize their losses."
