Chapter 468: Chapter 468 Fend for Yourselves
The conversation had left Qiao Hailiang and Zhao Lichun utterly embarrassed; it seemed they knew that the part-time job story was fake and meant to get Big Brother to take in Qiao Meng. Both were somewhat awkward.
Qiao Meng didn’t understand what her uncle meant and asked, "Uncle, what do you mean by that?"
Qiao Haiqing said, "It means your parents will definitely let you study, as long as you have the ability to get admitted. They’ll support your education all the way, so you don’t need to worry about not having books to read.
You know I care about my reputation, but you should also know that your parents care about theirs, so next time they make you uncomfortable, just go to the door and cry. Let the people at the fiberglass factory see that when you get a stepmom, you get a stepdad too, and let them see how they mistreat you. And don’t come running to me anymore; you have your parents, and it’s not my place as your uncle to interfere. Remember that."
Having said that, he looked up at his younger brother, not wanting to say another word, and turned to walk to the door. Just before going down the stairs, he added, "Think before you act from now on. Take care of yourselves."
Seeing Big Brother walk away without turning back, Qiao Hailiang felt a bit panicked. Honestly, he knew very well that his comfortable life at the fiberglass factory was due to the respect people paid to his elder brother.
He turned and glared fiercely at Zhao Lichun: "You’re always coming up with bad ideas. Now you’ve done it; Big Brother might never get involved with our second household’s affairs again."
Qiao Meng now understood that the temp job was a sham, just a ploy to make her run to her uncle for help so that she’d naturally end up staying at his place.
She wanted to live with her uncle, but knowing her biological father and stepmother’s scheme hurt her. It seemed the courtyard rumors were right: with a stepmom comes a stepdad.
If her uncle truly wasn’t going to bother with her anymore, she’d have to rely on herself. In just that short moment, Qiao Meng had already thought of a way to cope.
If they made things difficult for her, she’d just go downstairs and cry. The three yuan her birth mother gave her would stay in her own hands; she wouldn’t let anyone else take it.
None of these people truly cared about her; from now on, if anyone bullied her, they couldn’t blame her for shaming them later. After all, it’s every man for himself; even if it were her own parents, it’d be the same.
Having made up her mind, Qiao Meng ignored her biological father and stepmother, as well as her brother hiding in the room. She placed her bag on a nearby shelf and sat down at the dining table, saying, "I’m hungry."
After speaking, she picked up a set of chopsticks and started eating, indifferent to the mood of the people in the room. They owed it to her, especially for trying to deceive her into leaving her home.
No wonder they had stayed with her aunt for the past few days; it turns out they didn’t want people from the glass factory to know. They really went to a lot of trouble.
Qiao Hailiang looked at his daughter’s scowling face and said, "Don’t be mad; we did it for your own good. Your uncle’s house is more spacious than ours, and the food is better. You know that. If we told you beforehand, your uncle would have caught on to the scheme."
Qiao Meng, picking out the bits of meat and egg from her dish, replied indifferently after hearing Qiao Hailiang’s words, "It still ended up being known by my uncle, and now the whole family is disgraced. Nice."
Zhao Lichun saw Qiao Meng nearly finishing the meat and eggs in the dish and hurriedly called her son, "Come and eat quickly, or there’ll be nothing left soon."
Qiao Hongbing came out from the room, seeing Qiao Meng with grease all over her mouth, "Are you a starving ghost reincarnated? Don’t you see mom and dad haven’t eaten yet?"
Qiao Meng said, "Yeah, you’ve been eating this well when I was not at home? I have to eat more or I’ll feel I’m missing out."
Her remark successfully soured the expressions of the three people in the room. Qiao Hailiang said, "Sit down and eat your meal."
Zhao Lichun had resigned herself to the situation, fearing this troublemaker of a daughter couldn’t be sent away any longer, and, irritated, she grabbed another set of chopsticks to join the fray.
After seeing her third brother off, Luo Qiao turned to her grandfather and asked, "Grandpa, did dad mention anything about coming over today when he called?"
Luo Daoren replied, "He just said for us to have dinner without waiting for him; he has a lot of things on his hands. He didn’t say if he’d come over or not."
