Chapter 409: Chapter 409 Visiting Patients, Close the Door Disciple
Introduced Luo Qiao, "This is our neighbor next door, Qiu Yuehua, just call her Auntie Qiu, and the one coming over there is Qiu Baolu, her husband, you can call him Uncle Qiu."
Obediently, Luo Qiao greeted them, "Uncle Qiu, Auntie Qiu, it’s really fate that we all share the same surname, Qiu."
Everyone laughed, and Qiu Yuehua said, "Isn’t that the truth, lots of people say the same thing."
Then she turned to Feng Shumin and asked, "Professor Feng, your disciple here is so pretty and smart-looking, how old is she?"
With a smile, Luo Qiao replied, "Sixteen."
Qiu Yuehua observed Luo Qiao, "You should be in high school by now, right?"
Luo Qiao nodded, "Yes."
She wondered, Is she probing for personal details?
Feng Shumin quickly interjected, "Where were you two headed just now?"
Qiu Yuehua brightened up, "We just stopped by the Qin family’s home. Qin Muxiao has fallen sick again, it’s really worrisome especially over the New Year. That child has been frail since birth. She might have caught a cold yesterday, and since Mu Yang has some money, she ends up being quite the handful."
While they were talking, Qin Muyang came running over, "Professor Feng, is Professor Yang here?"
Not wanting to delay, Feng Shumin shouted into the courtyard, "Old man, come out quickly!"
After she spoke, she turned and headed for the kitchen, where the old man was still cooking. She quickly took over from him and explained the situation. Yang Jiancheng quickly took off his apron and left the kitchen.
Luo Qiao said, "Master, I’ll go with you."
Yang Jiancheng nodded and responded, "Okay, let’s go together. Do you have your Silver Needle with you?"
Luo Qiao nodded, "Yes."
Leaving her shoulder bag and the items she handled with her master’s wife, Luo Qiao followed them to the Qin family.
When they arrived, Qin Muyang’s mother was wiping her tears away. Seeing Professor Yang, she quickly said, "Professor Yang, please help check on Muxiao. Why has she fallen ill again?"
Yang Jiancheng approached the girl with the pale face and took her pulse, then said, "She’s still too weak, her nutrition can’t keep up, and she needs to be particularly careful in winter, to not catch a cold or overexert herself."
Then he signaled Luo Qiao to come forward and take the pulse. After Luo Qiao did so, she said, "She really needs to keep warm, and since her stomach and intestines aren’t good, she should eat soft, nutritious food as much as possible. I’ll give her a few acupuncture needles now, and in a while, my master will write a prescription; you should brew the medicine immediately."
This morning, Qin Muxiao hadn’t felt well, but given the New Year celebrations, she didn’t want to cause any trouble for her family. By the afternoon, she simply couldn’t hold up any longer. Her mother, reluctant to spend money and thinking it unlucky to visit the hospital over the New Year, hoped some ginger sugar water would induce sweat as it might for a healthy person. But Qin Muxiao was a preemie and had never been strong. Whatever little money the family had went into this bottomless pit over the years.
This year, the head of the Qin family, Qin Dahai, had an accident and passed away, leaving the family in even more dire straits. The small amount of compensation they received couldn’t even cover all their debts. When the daughter-in-law, Muyang’s elder sister-in-law, refused to allow Muxiao to be taken to the hospital,
she said that if they incurred more debt, she would divorce Qin Muli. It just so happened that Qin Muyang had been out playing with some friends today. Just coming home and realizing his sister’s illness was serious, his first thought was to seek Yang Jiancheng’s help.
Handing over a piece of paper and a pen, Qin Muyang watched as Yang Jiancheng wrote down a prescription and handed it to him, preparing to leave the room so Luo Qiao could administer the acupuncture. Qin Muyang’s grandmother, visibly worried, said, "This girl looks so young, are you sure she can handle it?"
Upon hearing this, Yang Jiancheng assured the grandmother, "She is my prized student, been learning medicine with me since she was five. Everything Feng Shumin and I know, we’ve passed on to her. Now she is even better than us—’the pupil outdoes the master.’ Auntie Qin, you can rest assured."
Qin Muli and his wife stepped out of the room to wait. To them, avoiding hospital fees was all that mattered; however, they couldn’t help but envy the young girl’s medical skill.
Qin Muli’s wife, Ma Jingxue, had an idea and spoke up, "Professor Yang, could you perhaps let our kids learn medicine from you?"
Yang Jiancheng glanced at the eldest daughter-in-law of the Qin family and said indifferently, "Luo Qiao is my last student. I’ve been unwell and resting at home. After the New Year, I have to return to teaching at the university. I’m sorry."
Standing to one side, Qin Muli, with an apologetic smile, said, "No offense, Professor Yang. Please don’t mind her nonsense."
He couldn’t believe his wife’s audacity. Professor Yang had just mentioned that the girl was his prized student, yet she still made such an embarrassing request. He gave his wife a stern look.
Yang Jiancheng ignored the spousal squabble and waited silently outside for his disciple.
He hadn’t lied—after the New Year, he intended to return to his teaching job. These past years, despite Uncle Yuan’s protection, he had been mentally exhausted, and the continuous problems caused by his relatives only added to his stress. Now, he just wanted to live a peaceful life with his wife.
