Chapter 303: Chapter 303: Who Doesn’t Have Times When They Need Help from Others

Zhang Chao said with a cold face, "What nonsense are you talking about? This matter can’t be taken seriously. Not to mention that Luo Qiao has only recently been recognized by the Luo Family, even before that, the Luo Family never brought up the matter of a child betrothal again. It must have been a joke. Besides, what era are we in now that we’re still holding on to those old customs?"

Zhang Xiao said, "Humph, I’m not talking to you anymore, you’re so boring."

By the time Luo Qiao and the others returned to the village, it was already late. They had an early breakfast, and Luo Qiao asked Stone to stay home and do his homework while she took the pastries she made to Doctor Gao’s place, since it was just across the bridge.

Doctor Gao happened to be tidying up at the entrance. Luo Qiao approached and said, "Doctor Gao, you’re busy, I see."

Doctor Gao stood up and upon seeing Luo Qiao, he smiled and said, "You’re back."

Luo Qiao handed over the pastries she was carrying, "Mm, these are pastries I made myself, following mooncake recipes, but I used ordinary molds. I brought some for you to try."

Doctor Gao laughed, "Then I, this old man, am in for a treat. Thank you. Oh, by the way, I have some wild honey that your Uncle Sanfeng collected in the mountains a few days ago. I’ll give you some to drink with water."

Luo Qiao smiled, "You keep it, Doctor Gao. I’m not just being polite with you. I also found a beehive in the mountains last time and got quite a lot, so I wouldn’t lie to you about it."

Doctor Gao looked at Luo Qiao and saw she wasn’t lying, "Alright, if you have some, I won’t share it with you then. It’s good for a girl to drink more honey."

Luo Qiao smiled, "I’ll remember that. Don’t let me keep you busy, I’m going to stop by Grandma Lin’s place."

Doctor Gao watched Luo Qiao walk away, "Such a good child, sigh!"

When Luo Qiao arrived at the Lin Family’s house at the entrance of the village, she saw that Grandma Lin had just finished cooking. She was probably inside looking after the old man, as the meal was still sitting on the stove in the courtyard.

Just as she was about to call someone, she saw that the porridge on the stove was as thin as water and the pancakes were mostly vegetable with very little flour. Luo Qiao felt a pang of distress.

They had sons and daughters. Even if the son was gone, there were still two daughters. Yet, they lived such a hard life. Perhaps her daughters had their own difficulties, but leaving the old couple in the village without coming back to check on them was something she couldn’t understand.

Luo Qiao silently retreated, found a safe place, and took out over twenty pounds of cornmeal from her space, along with two strips of dried fish she had learned to make herself, plus the pastries she brought today.

Lastly, she prepared twenty yuan. She knew that if she gave too much, Grandma Lin would probably not accept it. Then, she re-entered the yard, "Is Grandma Lin at home?"

Old Lady Lin was helping Grandpa Lin walk out, planning to eat outside, when she heard someone calling her in the yard, "Yes, I’m here, just a moment."

Old Lady Lin came out and saw Luo Qiao, smiling, "Is it you, Luo Qiao? Is it Sunday tomorrow?"

Luo Qiao smiled, "Yes, it is. Tomorrow is a rest day. I came back to tidy up my private plot and came to see how you both were doing. How is Grandpa Lin doing with his recovery?"

Old Lady Lin smiled, "Not bad, he can walk out with some help."

Luo Qiao set down the items and went over to help support the man.

Seeing what was on the stove, Old Lady Lin said with some difficulty, "Luo Qiao, this, this... why have you brought things again?"

After helping Grandpa Lin settle down, Luo Qiao said, "Grandma Lin, Grandpa Lin needs to eat well for a good recovery. Please don’t turn me away. This is within my means, and you shouldn’t be polite with me either. I’ll bring you some potatoes and sweet potatoes once they’re harvested tomorrow. I had a big harvest of potatoes and sweet potatoes in my private plot this year, and I can’t eat that much on my own. It’d be a shame to let them go to waste."

After hearing what Luo Qiao said, Old Lady Lin’s eyes immediately reddened, thinking to herself who would have so much grain they couldn’t eat it all. This was clearly an excuse Luo Qiao found to give them support.

Thinking of her own two daughters, Old Lady Lin sighed deeply, then looked at her husband sitting down, "Tomorrow, I’ll come over to help you dig. You can’t refuse this time; we’ve troubled you far too much."

Luo Qiao said, "Don’t say that; who doesn’t need help from others at times? The food here is all made by me. I’ve brought some for you two to try. Now, please eat while it’s hot, or it will get cold."

Old Lady Lin asked, "Aren’t you going to sit for a while?"
