Chapter 235: Chapter 235: Making a Fuss

Luo Qiao had intended to leave, but after considering the situation, she realized that the injured person was Qu Lili’s brother-in-law, so she turned around and came back, "Stop moving him. I’ve studied some traditional Chinese medicine, let me take a look."

Jiang Bo and Jiang Hong indeed dared not to move their father anymore and made room for Luo Qiao.

Luo Qiao said, "I need to examine him first, Uncle, please forgive me."

Without finishing her statement, she had already started feeling Jiang Dongli’s ankle, asked a few questions, then said, "This might hurt a bit in a moment, Uncle, please bear with it."

Before she could finish speaking, her hand had already moved, and Jiang Dongli let out another ’ah’, scaring Qu Meimei and her two sons with a jolt.

Luo Qiao said, "Uncle, please try moving your ankle now."

Jiang Dongli, who had been in agonizing pain just before, moved his ankle with some skepticism. Indeed, he could move it, and although it was still somewhat uncomfortable, the excruciating pain was gone.

Supported by his sons, he stood up and joyfully said, "Not bad, it really doesn’t hurt as much as before. Young lady, you truly have skill."

Luo Qiao replied, "That’s good, no problem, you should hurry to the hospital for a check-up. I’ll be on my way now."

Qu Meimei responded, "Okay, by the way, this is my husband Jiang Dongli, he works in the pharmaceutical factory, this is my eldest son Jiang Bo, he works at the Public Security Bureau, and that’s my younger son Jiang Hong, who just graduated from high school and is about to go to university in Tianjin."

Luo Qiao smiled, "Nice to meet you all, I’m Luo Qiao, I’ll soon be attending high school at the city’s No. 1 Middle School, and it was Sister Li Li who introduced me to the previous house."

Qu Meimei smiled and said, "That’s quite the coincidence, do come over to visit sometime."

With that, Luo Qiao bid farewell and turned back towards her home.

Upon returning home she tidied up a bit, soaked her feet, and prepared to rest for the night, as she had to wake up early the next day to catch the bus.

Luo Qiao had gone to bed early, but unbeknownst to her, Zhang Dezheng and his son had waited until almost five o’clock without seeing her enter or leave the grand theater’s residential compound, and decided to go back in to look for her.

Unexpectedly, before they reached the Yao Family, they were spotted by the people in the compound. Someone reported to the police station, and they were nearly taken away.

The police station, after understanding the situation and giving them a half-day’s worth of education, allowed them to leave. But when they came out, the last bus had gone, and to save on accommodation costs, the father and son stubbornly decided to walk all the way back home.

They lamented that they had already compensated Luo Qiao with eighty yuan, and heard that morning that the old ox, which no longer ate or drank and had broken its leg, probably wouldn’t be able to work again even after recovering, according to Doctor Gao. This meant they would have to compensate the collective farm for the ox, effectively rendering their family’s effort for the year void.

In Qingshan Village, people usually went to bed early, but that night, it was past ten o’clock, and Gao Shunyi’s home was still noisy, as Gao Taohua’s marriage to Li Dahe, which had seemed set in stone, was now in dispute.

The focus now was that the Gao Family demanded a bride price of one hundred fifty yuan, which the Li Family could not afford. The Li Family made it known that they could scrape together up to fifty yuan, or else the marriage was off the table.

This infuriated the Gao Family. Disdainful of Gao Taohua for bringing shame to the family, Gao Shunyi gave her a sound beating yet again.

Although Li Dahe was somewhat distressed, his mother said, "The Gao Family will agree; after all, we can’t suffer a loss."

With his mother’s firm stance, Li Dahe could only plan in his heart to treat Taohua well after she married into his family, but Gao Shunyi still harbored resentment. In the evening, he stepped out and on returning, he said to Gao Taohua, "You’ll be married the day after tomorrow to the same family from before, they’re offering a two hundred yuan bride price and will give you fifty yuan as a dowry you can keep on your person."

Gao Taohua started causing a commotion at home again and even ran to Li Dahe’s house to explain the situation to him.

Li Dahe was willing to come up with one hundred yuan, regardless of whether the Gao Family provided a dowry or not, but his mother adamantly disagreed, claiming that since he had already slept with his son, she had to marry in regardless, and besides, they had no money at home.

With her eyes tightly shut, Gao Taohua said to Li Dahe, "One hundred fifty yuan, if you can bring it by ten o’clock tomorrow night, then we’ll get married. If you can’t, I’ll go along with my family’s arrangement."

After this ordeal, Gao Taohua had come to terms with things; Li Dahe might be good-looking and capable, but he always listened to his mother, and she feared that even if she married into his family aggrieved, she wouldn’t have good days ahead.
