Chapter 221: Chapter 221 Black Market, Stirring

"The position of the Party Secretary was revoked by the commune, he must be quite aggrieved for sure, likely blaming Luo Qiao for his troubles."

"That’s just Uncle Dezheng’s fault, Luo Qiao has always been the victim from start to finish. He should be blaming his own daughter for his downfall, instead of being delusional."

Luo Qiao arrived in the city and first found a place to enter her space and change clothes before heading to the Black Market—it was time to deliver this month’s fish. He Yujie wasn’t there, so she made a deal with Ning Rui to trade later that night at the dilapidated house just outside the city.

Ning Rui was somewhat curious and asked, "How did you transport them?"

Luo Qiao replied, "Hasn’t your boss ever told you that curiosity killed the cat? I’ll be waiting for you there at nine o’clock sharp tonight."

Today, before dawn, Luo Qiao had climbed the mountain to deal with the fish. She particularly gathered a quantity tenfold more than usual, carefully sorting and returning the small fish to the pond while keeping only those over one and a half pounds.

Armed with an introduction letter, she wished to explore beyond her home. She could find a place to sell her haul; perhaps the Black Markets in the big cities might fetch a decent price.

She had two goals for this trip: one was to head south, using her money to barter for some goods to accumulate some initial capital, and the other was to go to Capital City to reveal her body double’s identity. As for the parents of her original life, what they did was not her concern anymore.

After circling through the Black Market without finding what she needed, she came upon a young boy selling medical books in a corner; they were all thread-bound.

After approaching, Luo Qiao carefully picked up a book and asked in a soft voice, "Are you selling these books for money, or are you trading them for something?"

The boy looked up at Luo Qiao and said, "I’m looking to trade for some fine grains and brown sugar."

After finishing, he seemed to have thought of something and added, somewhat embarrassedly, "I know they’re not worth much. If you like them, just give me whatever you think is fair."

Luo Qiao asked, "Where are your parents?"

Hearing this, the boy became cautious and watched Luo Qiao, "They have nothing to do with this."

As he began to pack away the books to leave, Luo Qiao reached out to stop the boy’s arm and said, "Don’t be afraid, I mean you no harm. I want these books. How about ten pounds of fine grains and a pound of brown sugar, is that okay?"

The boy’s eyes widened in disbelief, "Really? You can trade that much?"

Luo Qiao said, "These books must be heirlooms. Aren’t you going to regret trading them away?"

Looking reluctantly at the medical books, tears appeared in the boy’s eyes as he said, "Right now, my mom and sister are waiting for food to save their lives. If these books can save my sister’s life, it’s worth it."

Luo Qiao felt a strange stir in her heart upon hearing this.

Seeing the people in the Black Market, she said, "Pack those books so we can move to another spot. Even if I gave you the food now, you might not be able to safely take it out of the Black Market.

Rest assured, I’m not a bad person. For each of these books, I will give you ten pounds of fine grains, an extra pound of brown sugar, and some jujubes. If you agree, let’s leave this place right away."

After hearing Luo Qiao’s words, the boy thought for a moment as if making a decision, then swiftly packed up his tattered cloth and stood up to follow Luo Qiao out. Somehow, his instincts told him that the person before him meant no harm.

Now that his grandmother had injured her arm, it wasn’t convenient for her to go out. Without obtaining some fine grains to bring back soon, his mother might soon have no breast milk left, leaving his sister crying from hunger throughout the day.

Last time, the grains that his grandmother had managed to barter were supposed to last his mother a while. However, they hadn’t expected his uncle’s wife to bring the uncle and take everything, and his grandmother had even been injured in the attempt to stop them.

Luo Qiao and the boy left the Black Market, and she asked, "Where do you live? I’ll take you there and give you the goods. You’re too young to carry them all by yourself."

The boy had four ancient medical books, which amounted to forty pounds of fine grains; considering that the boy seemed to be only eight or nine years old, he probably wouldn’t be able to carry the weight very far.

If he encountered someone with bad intentions on the way, that would be a problem.
