Chapter 218: Chapter 218 Dismissed from Post

Upon entering, there was no excessive small talk. The decision regarding Zhang Dezheng was announced directly: expulsion from the Party, revocation of all Party positions, with the position of Village Secretary to be temporarily assumed by Brigade Leader Gao Jiefang.

The villagers who were huddled outside were utterly shocked by the news.

Zhang Dezheng spoke up, "Director, my daughter has indeed done something wrong, and I accept the responsibility I bear. But how can you expel me from the Party?"

Director Wang Tiejun responded, "You ask a good question. Initially, you wouldn’t have faced such severe punishment, but as the Secretary of Qingshan Village, you not only failed to handle the situation impartially when it first arose.

You also used your position to pull strings and seek favors to exonerate your daughter. As a Party member and Village Secretary, you failed to fulfill your duties and lost your Party integrity.

You did not resolve the matter fairly and justly, providing the victim with a resolution. What you did yesterday amounts to abuse of power for personal gain, so this is the decision made by the Party Committee of the commune."

Zhang Dezheng was struck dumb, his face flushed with embarrassment as he sat there, not speaking again for a long time.

Director Wang Tiejun continued, "Please hand over your duties. Starting today, Comrade Jiefang, please take on the extra burden until we can hold a new election after the autumn harvest."

Gao Jiefang said, "It’s not a burden. I will ensure that all tasks are handled well before a new Village Secretary is elected."

Gao Jiefang’s attitude satisfied the visiting officials. After issuing their instructions, they left together.

The village was in an uproar. The Secretary had been expelled. For those who had gripes with the Secretary’s family, this was a cause for celebration, and they were the first to help spread the word.

Wang Chunnian got up early in the morning, ate a bite of food, and accompanied by Big Brother, returned to the village. As she entered, she noticed that people were looking at her differently—some with sympathy, others with schadenfreude.

Her sister-in-law hurried over upon her return. "Sister-in-law, you’re finally back. Is the old lady alright?"

Wang Chunnian replied, "Nothing serious, she just needs to rest for a while after that fall yesterday due to her age."

Zhou Xiaomei, Zhang Degang’s wife, said, "Sister-in-law, people from the commune came earlier and expelled Big Brother from the Party. They removed his position as the Secretary and even said that he used his power for personal gain."

Upon hearing this, Wang Chunnian’s legs went weak, and she nearly collapsed to the ground. This was a severe allegation. The situation had improved in recent years, but how would their family have survived if this had happened a few years ago?

She knew how much her husband cared about the position of Secretary. He had hopes of moving up to a position in the township in the next few years which would be like securing a "iron rice bowl," a stable job.

But she never expected to be faced with such a punishment now, to be dismissed from the Party membership altogether, bearing a stain on his record. She hurriedly asked, "Where is your Big Brother?"

Zhou Xiaomei replied, "He’s at the brigade office handing over his work."

She then asked, "Has your Big Brother said anything about how to handle Qiaoyan’s situation?"

Zhou Xiaomei shook her head. "I haven’t seen Big Brother at all. Yesterday evening, Degang and I went over, but no one was there. Later, it got very late, and we heard that Big Brother and Dongze went to look for Luo Qiao, but somehow Gao Jiefang was notified.

When Degang and I arrived, they had already left Luo Qiao’s home. Then they went to the brigade office for a meeting, but it was too late, so we went home without waiting."

Wang Chunnian took a deep breath and turned toward home, with Zhou Xiaomei following behind her, saying, "Sister-in-law, are you alright?"

Big Brother, who was following Wang Chunnian, also looked on worriedly at his sister. His brother-in-law was always angling for a better position and knew how to put on a front, yet he was unreservedly devoted to his wife and children.

Wang Sihai also spoke up, "Little sister, are you okay?"

Wang Chunnian sighed, "I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. I’m going to tidy up at home and then go see Qiaoyan at the commune." Saying this with her last bit of strength, in reality, her heart was tearing apart.

Now that she knew her husband had been stripped of his post because of their daughter’s actions, it meant that her daughter couldn’t possibly be released after yesterday’s foolishness. Upon reaching her own courtyard and entering her house, she burst into tears, unable to hold back any longer.
