Chapter 590: Chapter 589: Joining in the Excitement
When Lin Xia got out of the car, her older brother Lin Chun was at the station to pick her up.
Shao Meirou and Shao Chengzhi had given Lin Xia many things to bring, so she had called home a day in advance to arrange the pickup.
Having not seen each other for quite some days, the siblings naturally felt a bit excited meeting up.
"Xiaoxia! Was the trip smooth? How was your visit to your mother-in-law’s?"
"It went really well! They were all very nice! The stuff in the bag you’re carrying are from my mother-in-law and Grandpa Lu Zheng!"
Upon hearing this, Lin Chun was quite happy, "That’s great!"
Lin Xia noticed Lin Chun’s cheeks seemed a bit thinner, and she asked curiously, "Big brother! Is everything alright at home?"
Logically speaking, it wasn’t even the fifteenth of the first lunar month yet. The food at home was good, so why would her elder brother have lost weight?
Lin Chun chuckled, "Everything’s fine at home! Dongzi has gone back to school! They won’t easily take any holidays or breaks from now on!"
"Mhm!" Lin Xia knew that it was the crucial period for Dongzi’s last few months of review, so it was normal not to have holidays.
Lin Xia continued to press, "And how about Xiaoqiu?"
"Xiaoqiu is also doing well. There wasn’t much to do in the clothing store during the first month of the lunar year, so she sometimes opens, sometimes doesn’t."
"What about the store?" Lin Xia’s business at the greenhouse would only start after the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.
The cosmetics shop was the only one currently open for business, which she had left entirely in Lin Chun’s hands, asking him to open and close daily and handle the finances.
"The store’s alright too, just that sales haven’t been great recently!" Lin Chun said this in a slightly somber tone, feeling that he had let down his elder sister by failing to take good care of the shop in her absence.
"Big brother! It’s always like this every year. Whatever could be sold before the New Year has been sold! Who could possibly buy that much during the first month of the lunar year!"
Lin Xia wasn’t too concerned about this, as it was typical for business to slow down after the New Year.
"I thought it was because I wasn’t around, and you were having trouble managing the staff, that the business was doing poorly!" When Lin Chun heard her say that, he felt a bit more relieved.
Lin Xia still felt something was off. She scrutinized Lin Chun closely, not missing any slight change in his expression, "Big brother! Why have you lost weight then?"
Lin Chun touched his cheeks with his free hand, "Have I lost weight? I didn’t notice! It’s probably because I’ve been pulling night shifts lately! Now that you’re back, I’ll bulk up again with more meat in my diet!"
Lin Xia raised an eyebrow, "Eating meat is easy! Don’t we have lots of ready-to-eat hocks in our storage? Just slice them, add some soy sauce, and garnish with green onions. Heat them up in the pot and that’s it!
You guys haven’t become too lazy to even prepare that for yourselves, have you?"
"Heh heh! We eat that often, all those hocks you prepared are gone!"
Lin Xia feigned shock, "My goodness! That was quite a lot! You guys really can eat!"
Lin Chun, caught up in Lin Xia’s mood, laughed heartily, "Isn’t it just easier that way! When reheating rice, the dish comes out ready too!"
Seeing that her questioning didn’t reveal any problems, Lin Xia finally let her worries rest.
By the time they got home, Lin Qiu had already prepared a table full of rich breakfast choices, with a bit of everything.
Steamed buns, dumplings, rice, and stir-fries.
Lin Qiu, excited, stepped forward and embraced Lin Xia, "Sister! You’ve finally come back! We’ve all missed you so much! How’s your brother-in-law? His family’s easy to get along with, right?"
Lin Xia had just entered the house and before she could even take off her coat, she was engulfed by Lin Qiu’s embrace and questions.
"They’re all very nice! I missed you guys too!" She pointed to the bag that Lin Chun had casually put down, "This bag is full of goodies for you all, and, Xiaoqiu, I bought you a cashmere coat!"
Lin Qiu’s eyes sparkled with joy, "Sister! Why did you buy me such an expensive piece of clothing!"
"What’s the big deal? My mother-in-law bought one for herself and one for me. Mine is yellow, and hers is black, so elegant! I didn’t feel right buying one in front of her, or else she would’ve insisted on paying!
I took the opportunity to go again and specifically got you one too, but yours is pink!"
"I love pink!" Lin Qiu detected something different in her tone, "Sister! Your mother-in-law treats you well, huh!"
When they were at home, chatting idly, they often wondered about what kind of treatment their sister would receive visiting her in-laws alone for the first time.
If her brother-in-law had been with her, they would not be concerned at all.
But for her to go by herself, who knew what it would be like?
Lin Xia was beaming with joy, "Of course! My mother-in-law even bought me a bunch of little trinkets! I’ll show them to you after we finish eating!"
Lin Qiu also felt Lin Xia’s genuine happiness and sincerely rejoiced for her sister, "Sister! Your mother-in-law is really good!"
"Xiaoqiu! One day, you’ll meet a good mother-in-law too!" Lin Xia knew her sister had been left with a psychological shadow by the old Wu family next door.
"Mm! I believe so!" Lin Qiu had heard from Kang Yijun about his mother, and she thought she wouldn’t be like Wu Zhengyang’s mother.
Lin Xia was very happy that she had become on good terms with her mother-in-law, Shao Meirou.
Who would want to be incompatible with the mother of the man they love, like fire and water?
In fact, every girl who has never been married may have thought at the beginning of their marriage to treat their mother-in-law like their own mother.
But often, some mothers-in-law don’t think that they should treat the girl who has left her home to marry their son like their own daughter.
Mothers-in-law only think the wife of their son is an outsider, an outsider forever.
In all matters, the son takes precedence, and whatever the daughter-in-law does is seen as her duty.
They even believe that it is a great honor for their son to marry her, otherwise, she would definitely not be able to marry at all!
Throughout history, there have been no shortages of mothers-in-law with such thinking.
Their sons are clearly just ordinary people, without any great achievements.
To put it bluntly, some even struggle to provide for their family.
But in their eyes, their sons are so outstanding that no girl would be good enough for them.
Therefore, after experiencing some very realistic raw deals, many girls gradually become disheartened and indifferent, wishing that creatures like mothers-in-law didn’t exist.
Lin Chun had left for work after breakfast.
Lin Xia didn’t have much on today, so she ate slowly.
Lin Qiu kept her company, chatting as they ate.
In the middle of their conversation, Lin Qiu brought up something.
"Sister! On the junior year reunion day, Sheng Yijun brought his girlfriend along, and he said they’re getting married on May 2nd! Should we all go and give them a gift?"
Lin Xia’s eyes flickered, and after swallowing the food in her mouth, she said, "Really? We must go! He came to my wedding too!"
Then she asked, seemingly offhand, "Who didn’t go to the gathering that day? Did Ma Hao go?"
"Ma Hao went too! And our second brother, his sister was there as well!"
Lin Xia had learned what she wanted to know.
She knew that Jiang Mingqing, having heard the news of Sheng Yijin’s wedding, must have behaved out of the ordinary.
She wondered what Jiang Mingqing’s reaction had been at the time, but she didn’t feel right asking Lin Qiu directly.
"Oh! How much did you all drink that day? Did anyone drink too much?"
"Jiang Mingqing drank too much! She kept downing shots of white liquor, and then she started to cry.
Luckily, our second brother got angry and stopped her from drinking, or she would have drunk a lot more!"
Lin Qiu was certain, "I think she drank because of Sheng Yijun’s wedding, that made her sad.
But tell me, sister, why was our eldest brother even fussing over that? He didn’t drink any less!
He ended up vomiting! He threw up several more times after Dongzi and I came back."
"Who knows, maybe he just felt like drinking!" Lin Xia knew in her heart that Lin Chun must have felt bad seeing Jiang Mingqing drink like that.
But she couldn’t talk to her sister about her elder brother’s feelings.
Since Lin Chun himself had never mentioned it, she preferred to act as if she knew nothing.
That way, she could focus on finding someone to introduce to him.
Finding him a sister-in-law as soon as possible was the only way she could truly feel at ease.
