Chapter 505: I Will Let You Go

"I... I did not intend to do that, Your Majesty. I simply had no choice but to punish Ivan. He is a cheater. He cheated during the selection. He should not be your assistant. He doesn’t deserve to be in his position, so I was trying to remove him so Your Majesty would not be troubled," Narcissa changed her story this time.

’You are the one creating trouble for me,’ Arabella internally facepalmed.

[Instead of apologizing for her actions, she’s shamelessly shifting the blame?!] Rowan frowned.

"What do you mean a cheater?" Arabella asked to see what Narcissa would say.

"I believe he cheated during the selection. How else could he have answered and done everything so quickly and perfectly? It was too suspicious."

"No one would be able to do any form of cheating during the selection. His Majesties knights were there to ensure that didn’t happen. His Eminence was also there to watch over everyone to ensure nothing of that sort happened," Arabella reminded.

"I think he must have done something to get to know the tasks for the selection beforehand. Thus, he already memorized and practiced it all before the selection," Narcissa insisted with her conspiracy theories. "I heard he was born poor so how could he have had the resources to study and learn about all those?"

"As you have said, he was indeed from humble beginnings. Thus, he didn’t have the resources or connections to be able to steal questions and tasks for the selection," Arabella pointed out.

"Then he must have worked with someone else. Maybe, he worked with Nadia and Odette. It was also suspicious how they were able to pass the test even though their homelands were going through hardships that they wouldn’t have had the chance to study. Nadia is learned with the sword," she said confidently despite learning about Nadia’s ability with the sword just earlier.

[None of my guards noticed her so she must be quite good at hiding herself. Egbert and Oscar both thought she seemed like an assassin or mercenary. Maybe she’s capable of stealing the documents for the selection. Ah, that must be it. How else would the three of them perform so well?]

’Oh, she truly believes they cheated.’

Arabella learned from Narcissa’s thoughts that she does think Ivan, Nadia, and Odette passing the selection was suspicious.

Narcissa believed that the three may have done something underhanded to pass, and assumed that perhaps, it was out of desperation.

’So, did she simply target them starting from the one with the lowest status? Is she denying how well they had been working ever since they became my assistants?’

Arabella was rather confused by Narcissa’s thoughts and actions. It was contradictory.

"Nadia and Odette do not have the resources or connection to be able to pull something like that either. Moreover, the Ministers made the questions in a room protected by magic. His Eminence, as well as His Excellency, were there that day. All the questions and instructions for the tasks were handed to His Eminence for safekeeping until the selection began," Arabella enlightened her.

[They did?] Narcissa glanced at Riley.

[Wait. Why does Her Majesty keep defending the three? Isn’t she showing favoritism right now? Shouldn’t she be choosing me over those three? I have more connections than they could ever have. My family is powerful and has a strong influence. Is Her Majesty just a pretty face after all?]

’This girl, if I have not lived to my forties, I may be pulling at her hair right now. I wouldn’t get offended by that and just let it pass. I must be the mature one since she’s still quite young,’ Arabella internally sighed.

"I don’t know how but I think it’s still suspicious how they passed the selection. They must have done something, whatever it was," Narcissa still insisted despite her lack of proof.

"Narcissa, if you truly believed they cheated, or stole the questionnaire or list of tasks, you should have reported it immediately on the day of the selection or the days after that, or as soon as you realized it. An investigation would have been conducted and they would have been punished accordingly if they did. But instead, you put the law in your own hands and tried punishing them yourself. You even tried to make Ivan quit by taking extreme measures. All these are punishable according to Valeria’s laws. We can take legal actions against you and the three can take you to court as well for what you have done to them."

Only then did Narcissa freeze.

[If it’s Her Majesty who does something, it would be difficult to debate it with His Majesty supporting her now. But if it’s just the three, my family would be able to do something about it.]

’Oh my. So, she believes Ferdinand would turn his back on me soon? And what would her family do so she would not be punished for her actions?’

Narcissa was not that afraid because of her family’s status.

’She seems to be forgetting that the laws need to be followed even by them.’

Since Narcissa kept insisting that the three had done some kind of cheating, Arabella added, "The five ministers who made the tasks and questions were the ones who checked and recorded their papers first. They would have noticed if something was wrong. After that it was passed to His Excellency, he rechecked them again and forwarded it to me. Are you saying that the seven of us had overlooked something?"

"No, Your Majesty. I would never dare."

[Why is Her Majesty speaking this way?]

"Then are you saying that His Eminence could have slacked off in guarding the documents?"

"No, Your Majesty. Definitely not."

Since Narcissa was not in the least bit regretful about what she had done, Arabella had to be hard on her.

"Narcissa, it seems you do not realize the gravity of your actions. Ivan, Nadia, and Odette are my precious assistants just like you regardless of their roots. They are capable individuals and I have seen with my own eyes the quality of their work. I will not allow you to torment them any further. You are indeed also very much capable. Thus, I didn’t want to let go of you despite everything. However, seeing how you lack self-awareness to reflect on your mistakes and harmed others without guilt, I believe, I may be able to let go of you now. Do you understand what I mean?"

Arabella eyed Narcissa sternly this time. The latter was wide-eyed at her statement.
