Chapter 479: What Created a Wary Child
Duke Olivier observed his closest knights’ reaction to seeing Dimo again and was relieved that they were genuinely glad Dimo was safe and sound.
[Dimo gained some weight again.]
The Duke also noticed the change.
[I thought something was wrong with his appetite because he still missed his mother. But Sonia must have been giving him glares or treating him badly behind my back, so he didn’t eat much. The difference in his height and weight is very much noticeable ever since he began staying with Her Imperial Majesty.]
Duke Olivier was even more assured that for now, it was best for Dimo to stay in Valeria.
He didn’t need to worry that Dimo might not be treated badly since just more than two months of Dimo staying in the Magic Tower gave such a clear difference both in the child’s physical appearance and mood.
[He even talks a lot now. If we are at home, he’s almost always silent. I thought he simply disliked Sonia, so he was usually only talkative when he converses with me. But it must have been because Sonia didn’t really treat him as a son of her own even though that was what she had been saying.]
The Duke was certain he was making the right decisions since Dimo was clearly much happier now than he ever was in their duchy ever since his mother died.
"Father, I have something to say."
Dimo appealed to his father and the Duke nodded.
"What is it?"
"I can’t say it out loud."
Dimo glanced at their knights with suspicion.
The Olivier knights blinked twice and looked at each other at their young master’s action.
[Why is the Young Master looking at us like that? Shouldn’t he be doing that to the Valerian knights?]
[What’s going on? Did they ruin our image on the young child?]
’We did not ruin anything. It was simply because it was your side who almost ruined this child’s future,’ Arabella wanted to say.
The Duke then bent down so Dimo could whisper to him. Everyone became silent to listen in to what a child wouldn’t want others to hear.
"Will I be alright?" Dimo’s voice, though already a whisper indeed, was still audible enough even for Arabella to hear so everyone heard it as well.
[The Young Master knows he could be punished severely. Did they let him hear what his punishment could be?]
[They did spare his life, but did they treat him coldly or scare him? But if they did, why did he dare embrace Her Imperial Majesty? He looked genuinely happy to see her.]
The question made the knights misunderstand the situation.
"I...I don’t want to go back and stay with them. I want to stay there and keep studying magic," Dimo whispered again and unintentionally revealed he was already learning about magic because his whisper was louder than he thought especially with these people who had honed their senses.
[Stayed where? With the Valerians? And what does he mean by studying magic?]
[What’s this supposed to mean? Was the Young Master already learning about magic? I thought His Grace only received the book of magic recently after we completed our task in Medeus.]
"Yes, of course. Don’t worry, I will take care of things," the Duke patted Dimo’s head.
"Really?"
"Yes. Behave as you are told so you can keep staying there," Duke Olivier reminded.
Dimo nodded and suspiciously glanced at the Olivier knights again.
[Why is he looking at us like that again? It should be the Valerian side he would give such kind of stare.]
The knights were even more surprised when Dimo fearlessly walked back to the Valerian side and stood beside Arabella. Even more so when Arabella extended her hand and Dimo held unto it.
[Am I really seeing this right now?]
[Is the young master not scared? Wasn’t he told how terrifying Valeria, especially the current Emperor, could be?]
[The Empress of Valeria just extended her hand towards the Young Master, and he just held unto it as if he was used to it. The Emperor eyed Dimo darkly again but the Empress seems to be kind to the Young Master.]
The Olivier knights were left flabbergasted even more when Dimo was escorted into the same carriage as Arabella and Ferdinand. And that Dimo was even escorted into the carriage before the two.
Once Arabella and Ferdinand were in their carriage, Duke Olivier then rode his horse to personally lead them to the castle.
Arabella, meanwhile, seated herself beside Dimo. This made Ferdinand cross his arms as he stared at the child and Arabella gave him a warning look before Dimo begins to feel uncomfortable.
The curtains were closed so the people in the duchy would not see who was inside.
However, a magic spell was cast on the curtains, so it was see-through from the inside as if the curtain was not even there.
Ferdinand touched a magic circle beside the window to activate the spell. Arabella copied him and did it on the other side. It worked.
"Wow! That’s also magic, right?!" Dimo was amazed.
"Yes," Arabella chuckled at the child’s enthusiasm. He really likes magic now after studying it for more than two months.
Alwin, Riley, and the magicians in the Magic Tower were choosing what spells to teach Dimo.
Since he was still a child, they were careful not to teach him things he could use to trick other people to avoid him growing up rotten. For now, they were focusing on his fire magic.
{This carriage is soundproof too, right?} Arabella touched her ring.
Ferdinand did something to their wedding ring so they could speak telepathically with each other through it.
{Yes. You can speak as you please.} Ferdinand assured her.
But it wasn’t about her, it was more about Dimo. She was worried Dimo might speak about their plan and the Olivier knights may hear it.
Thankfully, she didn’t have to worry about it since the carriage was also soundproofed with a magic barrier.
Dimo would be able to speak freely too while they were in the carriage since he would have to limit his words once they were with Sonia.
