Chapter 326: No Remorse [Bonus Chapter]
The awaited day of the trial came. And it went smoothly with all the pieces of evidence Alwin and everyone else worked hard to gather.
As expected, Jacob and Adolfo were both declared to be executed on the very same day of the trial.
Even when they pled for a lighter punishment, their crime was too heavy to be ignored.
The Council could not tolerate what they did since it happened in Medeus and Arabella was their guest from Valeria.
Moreover, if the two were not executed, it could embolden other people or groups to try assassinating royals even here in Medeus since they would not be executed anyway. Thus, the punishment had to be this heavy to set an example among the people.
Arabella learned from the thoughts she could hear that there were nobles in the trial who were secretly affiliated with Umbra. They attended since they wanted to know if Adolfo leaked any information about them.
They had a policy in Umbra that kept their identities protected even in the worst-case scenarios so they were hoping Adolfo would not break something he, himself had established.
If Adolfo revealed anything about them, he himself would have brought about the destruction of the organization he created.
It cannot be declared that Umbra was directly involved in the assassination attempt though since only Adolfo planned it with Jacob but the other members and leaders had no idea about it. Thus, Umbra cannot be punished along with Adolfo.
Still, they would take a heavy blow with Adolfo, the top-most head, getting executed.
Ferdinand planned to deal with them later once the Assembly was over.
After all, Umbra was an organization that heavily supported the existence of slaves. With Umbra’s existence in Eliora, slaves would keep being traded for years and might even continue underground once even when the given time to adapt was over.
There were even royals that were part of Umbra. However, they did not help Adolfo or Jacob at all. They saw the execution as an opportunity to take the leadership of Umbra instead and take its direction wherever they wanted.
Adolfo had grown way too powerful over the years that he could rival the influence of a kingdom. Thus, even royals who were part of Umbra could not topple him. Valeria and the Council doing it for them was an unexpected gift.
Moreover, Adolfo not having any ounce of loyalty either to Crux or Eliora was also troublesome for them. Adolfo could abandon Eliora anytime he wanted while the royals cannot since they had duties and responsibilities in their homelands.
Adolfo’s family were just low-ranking nobles in the past but due to his grandparents’ trading slaves, they grew rich and became more powerful.
Adolfo inherited his business from his parents, so he simply thought he was entitled to everything he had and maximized it.
For him, there was nothing wrong with trading slaves since it was normal to have slaves in Crux. To Adolfo, what was wrong were the countries that prohibited such a profitable business venture. He barely saw slaves as people. They were merely commodities.
With such a mindset, their family business reached its peak in Adolfo’s time. After he made Umbra, he was even bestowed the title of a Count and some land that he used for further growing the family business.
The King of Crux himself thought that Adolfo was an asset to their kingdom since he was able to raise their sphere of influence and make other kingdoms fear them. Thus, he thought that Adolfo’s execution would be a great loss for them.
After all, he knew Adolfo was the leader of Umbra and it was rather a source of pride for him and the other nobles in Crux who knew about it. But all of it was about to end. Unless someone from Adolfo’s family would succeed him and lead Umbra next.
Royals from other kingdoms were set on taking the lead of Umbra though. They felt bad for Adolfo, but they simply concluded that this was his fate for provoking someone he could not defeat.
Umbra had a lot of influence, but they were still just an organization meant for business. They had a lot of mercenaries and magicians under them, but they cannot compare to the military might of Valeria.
[Idiots. Do they think everything ends here once I’m gone? Fools. I can tell these power-hungry fools would fight over Umbra. They know how much profit they could make with the slave trade. It won’t end. A lot of people depended on my business for money. A lot of families get to eat from being part of my group. They won’t remain silent when their source of income gets cut off. And they would all blame this woman for causing my death and thus, their lack of income and suffering. She would be in even more danger even if I die here today.] Adolfo vengefully thought.
Arabella froze when Adolfo grinned at her even though he was already on the gallows. Now, she could say she was scared. And disgusted.
The signal was given to execute Adolfo.
Ferdinand covered Arabella’s eyes, but she heard the sound of Adolfo’s head falling to the ground.
Adolfo felt no remorse even to the end. For him, he was still the one in the right.
Arabella felt like the loser somehow.
Jacob was executed as well, but Ferdinand did not let her see it either.
[I knew it! There he goes again trying to escape like he did last time. I won’t let you escape from me a second time!]
Arabella was wide-eyed when she heard Alwin’s thoughts. Alwin vanished beside them and was replaced by Riley the next instant, so people won’t notice.
With Alwin’s thoughts, Arabella was sure now that this was the same person who occupied Hayden. He tried to escape in the same method since Alwin was not able to catch him last time in Arno.
But this time, some of Alwin’s limiters were lifted in preparation for this.
