Chapter 308: Ferdinand’s Warning [Bonus Chapter]
[What should I do?! What should I do?! My parents are clearly horrified. They must be very disappointed in me. But I had no choice but to admit it since they already have proof. Rather than getting punished for a heavier crime, which I did not even do, it’s better to admit my lighter crime and be punished for it. But now, Mother would surely compare me to her even more.] Lucille was at her wit’s end as her parents eyed her in disappointment and horror.
Arabella learned from Lucille’s thoughts that her mother, had been comparing the two of them.
Lucille got jealous every time her mother had a lot of praise for Arabella but not for her, her very own daughter who was doing just the same or even putting in more effort.
Her mother did not appreciate how much Lucille worked. What mattered was the outcome. If she did not surpass what Arabella achieved, to her mother, Lucille had failed.
Thus, every time Arabella head an achievement, especially at times when she made a successful agreement with royals and nobles from other countries related to the trade of products with Lobelius, Lucille’s mother would pressure her to do the same and make sure to do better than Arabella.
Moreover, Lucille was often referred to as second only to Arabella in beauty and Lucille’s mother hated it. Even more so when people began to think that even Lucille’s abilities, knowledge, and education were also said as second-rate.
Lucille’s mother was apparently the former fiance of Arabella’s father so he didn’t want her daughter to be losing to Arabella as well just as she did with her mother.
Lucille was then pressured to achieve much more than Arabella ever does. Even when it comes to marriage. She was pressured to marry someone better than Andrew who became Arabella’s lover.
But in Eliora, Andrew was the most desired among the young ladies. How could Lucille get someone better? Especially when she also loves Andrew.
After Arabella married Ferdinand, Lucille’s mother tried to arrange a marriage with King Icarus but failed so she was currently trying to look for a powerful figure to marry Lucille off with.
’I see. She had it hard too,’ Arabella now understood why Lucille was insecure about her. But that doesn’t mean Lucille was justified in trying to harm her.
King Neville was so disappointed in his daughter since he fully believed in Lucille. But he saved the scolding for later. He prioritized apologizing for what Lucille had done and appeasing Arabella and Ferdinand’s anger so they would not demand a heavy punishment.
"We will talk about her punishment later. First of all, she has to cooperate and honestly answer all our questions," Ferdinand glared at Lucille.
Lucille then promised to answer everything honestly. She decided it was better to swallow her pride than die here today.
"Then, from whom did you hear about the drug you had asked your guard to buy?" Arabella inquired.
"It was just something I overheard. I was eating in a restaurant in the city when I heard someone from the next room talking about it," Lucille replied. It made both Alwin and Ferdinand frown.
How can something important be spoken about in a restaurant in loud voices? Even if it was one for nobles and they had their own private rooms, people who talked about this drug would have been more careful in speaking about it.
However, Arabella was able to verify from Lucille’s thoughts that she was speaking the truth.
Lucille sat by the window and she and her maids Risa and Olive heard the conversation because the window in the other room was also open.
It was then that Lucille thought of getting back at Arabella and Andrew by using the drug. Thus, she asked her most trusted guard Samuel to obtain it for her since he was the one she knew would not dare speak about it.
Risa, Olive, and Samuel were then called with them to verify Lucille’s claim. Since it was determined as true, the issue about the drug was set aside for now.
They then asked Lucille to summon everyone who knew about her plot against Arabella and Andrew. But the only other person who knew about it on Lucille’s side was Olive, her most trusted maid.
Lucille did not inform others to minimize the risk of getting caught.
Olive was questioned and she was not the one who poisoned Arabella nor did she have a part in it. And Lucille and Olive both had told no one else about it.
All of Lucille’s maids and guards were questioned next but no one was involved in poisoning Arabella. All of them were not under any spell either.
This left them puzzled.
They were left with the conclusion that someone spied on Arabella’s friends and possible enemies to find someone to frame for their assassination attempt.
Lucille and her family were then allowed to go home with the oath that they keep everything discussed here a secret.
Ferdinand demanded a punishment heavy enough to ensure Lucille learns her lesson. However, he left it to King Neville to decide what kind of punishment it would be.
"Oh, just to be clear, Princess Lucille, I can have you killed the instant I decide to do so. No matter wherever you hide, I have people who can find you. If you ever dare to do something to harm my wife directly or indirectly, I don’t mind declaring war on Obrusca at all," Ferdinand declared and everyone from the said kingdom turned pale.
After all, Ferdinand had the power to do so.
"Be grateful that you are once Arabella’s friend, and that your father is currently the Head of the Council and had pursued the abolishment of slavery. My wife had decided to give you another chance because of these. If not, I would have had you exiled or executed for doing something that could have harmed my wife or ruined her reputation. I won’t tolerate a next time. I have my ways to know whether you are involved in something or not so you better behave," Ferdinand threatened Lucille.
King Neville knew Ferdinand was serious. Thus, he promised that he would have Lucille confined in their abode both here in Medeus and in Obrusca for a few months and have her re-educated and disciplined so she would not do such things ever again.
Meanwhile, Alwin had no choice but to check on each of the magicians of the royals and other nobles who attended the assembly.
Most nations had at least one or more magicians under the royal family. And these magicians, just like Alwin, secretly accompany them during trips on Medeus for security purposes since only a limited number of knights were allowed into Medeus.
