Reborn as a Mind-Reading Empress -
Chapter 213: Her Voice Sounded So Familiar
Chapter 213: Her Voice Sounded So Familiar
Since they have to continue their journey to Medeus, Dimo was teleported to the Magic Tower where Riley could begin teaching him how to control his fire magic.
Meanwhile, Alwin caught the men who were chasing Dimo and retrieved his shoes as proof they were the ones who tried to kill the child.
In the interim, Alwin used the excuse that they were armed and too close to the temporarily prohibited area and could have been planning to harm the Emperor and Empress who were traversing the road.
The men were imprisoned in the Magic Tower to be presented to Duke Olivier later.
Arabella knew that Sonia and the head butler were conspiring to have Duke Olivier killed while returning home from the assembly so she decided to speak with him in Medeus.
She wanted to prevent his death if she could so Dimo wouldn’t have to suffer as he did in his previous life. She wished Dimo would have a normal childhood and a happy life this time.
They then continued their journey to Medeus. And once again, Arabella was all alone in her carriage with Ferdinand.
"You seem to like children," Ferdinand was the first to speak this time.
"I do. Children are adorable and sweet. They are relaxing and fun to be with," Arabella beamed.
From experience, she knew it could also be tiring to take care of children but everything she did for Fermin was worth it. He grew up smart, kind, and loving. And she loved him very much. He was the light of her life.
"I see," Ferdinand nodded his head and stared at her.
[If she liked children that much, we can just make our own...] His ears turned red due to his own thoughts.
[Why am I like this? I never even thought of having children before. I came here to the human realm because I was told I have to produce at least a child or two to replace me before I sleep to death. Yet, for years, I still had no interest in getting married or having children. But now, I’d love to have children with Arabella. And I hope they resemble her so they wouldn’t be as terrifying as I am.]
’Sleep to death?’ Arabella didn’t like the sound of this. She wanted to know more about it.
She had internally promised to wait for her husband to be ready and tell her about himself. But there was so much she wanted to know. It keeps piling up that she might go crazy if she doesn’t get answers to at least some of it soon.
’I need to give him some more push.’
"Ferdinand," Arabella called out.
"Yes?" he straightened up though he was not slouching in the least bit.
"Can we do the thing I said last time? There are questions I would like to ask you," she said and her husband visibly tensed. This was his reaction last time too.
[Should I go hunting after all?]
’What?! He’s going to run away?!’ Arabella wondered how to make him stay. ’Should I sit on his lap and embrace him?’
But she knew from experience that would distract him too much. He might not be able to answer her questions properly.
[No! When did I become this cowardly?! I have to take the risk. What if she gets angry and doesn’t talk to me anymore?]
Ferdinand realized he didn’t want her to stop speaking with him the way she does now so he resolved to stay.
"Yes, of course. What would you like to ask?"
"I have a lot of questions. Since we have time on our hands right now, would it be alright?" she asked and he tensed yet again.
He gulped and braced himself before saying, "Yes, of course. Ask whatever you want."
Ferdinand gulped at his own words.
"Then... I first met you as Sir Elmir when you saved me when I was sixteen. I heard he was one of your knights. But I have never seen him since then," Arabella began from the beginning.
"Elmir is assigned somewhere else. He’s not likely to be in the palace. But maybe, in the future, you will also meet him."
[If you come with me to Estrella, I can officially introduce you to everyone.]
"Why are you asking about him?" Ferdinand was worried that just as Raymond said before, she might be taking an interest in Elmir instead of him.
"Oh, it’s just because I first met you as Sir Elmir so I wondered if he was a true person or just an appearance Alwin made."
"He’s real. The same is true for Rowan and Zion. Elmir is usually a silent person like Rendell. Rowan is like a mixture of Rendell and Raymond. Zion is like Alwin who is more focused on magic," Ferdinand revealed. "I’m sorry for lying to you that time. I wanted to reveal who I was but I could not reveal I am the Emperor of Valeria due to complications it might cause."
"It’s alright. Raymond and Alwin explained, so I understand now. Oh, right. Now that I thought about it, I haven’t thanked you properly yet. Thank you for saving me that time. I would have been dead if not for you."
"You don’t have to thank me. It was my own decision."
[Just the thought that if I didn’t go there on time, I would have lost her forever still horrifies me. I’m glad I went hunting on Mt. Callion that day.]
Ferdinand transferred beside her all of a sudden. He sat so close their hips were almost touching.
"I’m simply glad I was able to get to you before that monster’s attack reached you. If I didn’t, I simply know I would regret it for the rest of my life," he cupped her face. The look on his face made her heart race.
[That time, I’m sure I heard her voice call out my name. She doesn’t know me yet, but I’m sure I truly heard it. And she said it as if she had been so used to saying my name. I wonder why. Her voice sounded so familiar... The scared and horrified look on her face made me want to protect her for the rest of my life so she won’t ever make that face again. I don’t want her, something so small and precious, to be exposed to such danger again.]
Arabella was beginning to feel embarrassed and overwhelmed by her husband’s thoughts again. Who would have expected Ferdinand to have these kinds of thoughts even when they had just met?
