Chapter 151: Sentenced to Death
Chapter 151: Sentenced to Death
Arabella woke up early in the morning for the trial of Count Dempsey and his ally magician. The trial would be held in Arno Dukedom since Safiro wasn’t in a state to be able to hold trials yet.
Nadia and her siblings were still to speak with everyone and organize their government and judicial system.
They were informed about the death of their father and oldest brother a few days ago. It was part of the crimes of Count Dempsey so they had to know in advance so they wouldn’t be shocked during the trial.
The siblings were heartbroken about the news and cried, but they did not wallow in sorrow. They said they already knew it was suspicious that ever since their father and oldest brother were captured, they were not shown to anyone ever again. Not even when Nadia was captured and brought to Dempsey.
Nadia and her siblings apparently already had an inkling of what may have happened, but they wanted to confirm it for themselves. Thus, the attempts to enter Dempsey in the past. It was also the siblings clinging to the hope that the chief and their eldest were still alive.
However, after they were informed of the news and shown the remains, they confirmed that it was indeed their father, the former Chief, and their oldest brother Carlos.
Alwin patched up the corpses with magic so the siblings would be able to grieve and bury them in their former gallant and strong appearance.
The fate of Safiro now lies in how the siblings would rule it. Thus, they had to decide on their own the direction Safiro was going.
Bernardo, now the eldest was to be the new Chief of the Tribe. He would be ordained after the trial.
Nadia had chosen to continue serving as Arabella’s assistant and widen her horizons.
Once things stabilize in Safiro, Dante also planned to go out and explore the Empire since he was the only one among the siblings who stayed in their territory the entire time.
The rest of the siblings would remain in Safiro to help Bernardo since there was so much work to do. They had to begin from scratch after all.
Civil Servants from Riva carefully chosen through their skills and performance would be sent to temporarily help in the management as well.
Arabella and Ferdinand were both directly involved in the recovery of Safiro so Civil Servants wouldn’t dare to be so smug. They would be under Riley’s watchful eyes as well so no one would dare to overuse their power.
Riley had to remain in Safiro with some knights in case the magician had other accomplices. They may go to Safiro to try and retaliate since their comrade was caught. It was also to guard Blanca who would stay in Mt. Esme with Esmeralda for a few days.
. . .
Dempsey’s trial was tiring since he tried to defend his actions with all sorts of nonsense. He also said if his first wife and son were not killed by Safirans, he wouldn’t have hated Safiro to this extent.
However, it was still no defense for him to torment the people of Safiro. He wasn’t as smart as Gulliver so it was easy to have him convicted since even Dempsey’s own words revealed that he did plot to make Safiro suffer out of hatred and revenge.
It was clear that the mind between the two was the magician. If not for the magician, Dempsey wouldn’t have been able to implement his plans for so long.
Dempsey did admit that it was the magician who approached him first and gave him a very tempting offer which was why he decided to take action.
Count Dempsey was shocked to learn though that the drought in Safiro was all the magician’s plot. He thought it was just an after-effect of Mt. Esme getting burned. He wasn’t informed either that Mt. Esme and the entirety of the land of Safiro were cursed. The magician had him fooled as well. After all, the Count did covet the fertile lands of Safiro.
Dempsey did know about the illusion that the magician used to hide the situation in Safiro. He also knew that his knights and his men were under a spell to forget what they had seen and done in Safiro except for those who were ’in’ on his plans.
Count Dempsey was convicted along with his men who knew about the suffering of the Safirans and still tormented them. They were all sentenced to death and would be executed soon.
All of Dempsey’s assets and properties, except for those already given to his children, were to be confiscated and sold. The amount to be collected would be donated to Safiro.
The magic ores still in his storage would be brought to the Magic Tower under Alwin’s care. All the money Dempsey earned from it were to be returned to Safiro, who were by rights, the owner of the magic ores.
Meanwhile, most of Dempsey’s men were sentenced to imprisonment since they did not even know what was going on.
Once Alwin undid the spells on them, they were shocked that they were arrested due to having been part of such a heavy crime.
They could be considered as victims of Dempsey and the magician.
However, they still had to be imprisoned for further observation of their behavior to verify if they truly do not remember anything.
There may be some among them who were just pretending to not remember anything even when they do. It was better safe than sorry.
On the other hand, the trial surprisingly went well with the magician, whom Arabella now knew was named Hayden.
Hayden easily admitted to his crimes when he was questioned.
When asked about his purpose, he said that of course, he was on it for the profit. He even apologized for getting blinded by the amount of money he could get and not caring about the people at all.
Hayden was also convicted and sentenced to death. He would be executed with Dempsey and the others.
