Chapter 145: Fleeting Happiness
Chapter 145: Fleeting Happiness
Esmeralda watched over her descendants’ fleeting lives and continued to give them the blessings of the forest and protected them.
The Safirans were her kin and her only memento of her husband, after all. She cannot leave them behind even if it meant having to watch her own descendants die before her.
Esmeralda was currently three thousand years old. She got married when she was two thousand years old and only briefly lived with her beloved Safiro in the short span of a human’s life. It was a fleeting happiness to someone long-lived.
Arabella realized that marriages between the long-lived races and humans were a bit too sad.
One would remain longing for the other and continue to relive their memories together after they were long gone. It was something too painful and lonely.
It was what would happen to Ferdinand once she dies due to old age? He would watch over their children and their descendants as well for a long long time?
Even if Ferdinand had a way to prolong Arabella’s life, it was hard to believe she would be able to live as long as he does.
He couldn’t possibly revive her again and again since it was something that could only be done once to nigh impossible.
{I see. I knew you would make that choice.} Alwin sighed as Esmeralda gave a bittersweet smile. It was clear in her eyes she still loved and treasured her deceased husband.
[This is exactly why marriage with humans is not advisable. Their life is too fleeting. If my lord didn’t need to marry a human, he wouldn’t have had to suffer as well.]
’Ferdinand NEEDED to marry a human?’ Arabella frowned. It was something she wanted to know in detail but she cannot even ask about it.
Alwin teleported them to the top of Mt. Esme where Esmeralda’s tree was located.
Riley headed to the residential area to inform everyone about what was about to happen and ensure they won’t panic or get too excited.
Once everything was ready, Alwin touched Esmeralda’s tree. It glowed in golden green light from top to bottom and down to its roots.
Arabella gasped as the ground shook.
Ferdinand wrapped his arm around her waist and made sure she wouldn’t fall over. She had no choice but to hold onto him and he smiled.
Esmeralda’s tree grew taller and bigger in girth. It grew branches as Alwin kept healing her.
Once the branches have spread out, smaller twigs followed. And soon, buds and green leaves finally grew until a gigantic lush tree was what was in front of them, no longer the charred and burned one.
Esmeralda was finally healed by Alwin and it was such an astonishing sight.
[Amazing! He truly healed Aunt Esme!] Blanca was overwhelmed as well.
"My deepest gratitude. I will never forget this kindness," Esmeralda bowed.
Alwin said he was just doing his job as Ferdinand’s magician. When Esmeralda thanked Ferdinand, he also said it was his duty as the Emperor of Valeria and that it was Arabella to thank for visiting Safiro which was why their situation came to light.
Arabella ended up having to accept Esmeralda’s gratitude.
"The pleasure is mine. I just visited here though because of my assistant. Everyone else did all the work," Arabella smiled at the dryad.
She was glad someone as loving as Esmeralda could continue to treasure what she cherished the most.
"Spread seeds everywhere or make the sleeping seeds under the ground awaken and grow until they are at least an inch or two. You shouldn’t exert yourself yet, so I’ll take care of the rest," Alwin instructed Esmeralda.
Arabella watched in awe as numerous green sprouts sprung up from the ground as Esmeralda used her powers.
"Alright. That’s enough," Alwin said once the sprouts reached about two inches from the ground.
They formerly planned for Alwin to make it rain torrents in Safiro to give moisture and water to the ground.
However, it would erode the loose dry soil and may also cause flooding. After all, desertification has begun in Safiro; perhaps, as part of Count Dempsey’s and the magician’s plans.
Thus, they concluded that Alwin would only make it rain after he made some vegetation grow through mana to hold the soil and prevent erosion and flooding.
Alwin cast several spells and a gigantic magic circle formed on the ground. She learned from Alwin’s thoughts that it was to rid the entirety of Safiro with the curse the magician had given it.
Once the magic circle vanished, Alwin cast another spell which made the sprouts glow. The little sprouts began to grow.
The ground shook as the sprouts grew into various plants and huge towering trees.
When the tremors finally stopped, everyone was surrounded by huge trees, shrubs, grasses, and vines.
Mt. Esme was once again a lush forest.
Arabella, Blanca, and Esmeralda looked around in awe.
’Alwin is simply marvelous! How can he accomplish these things that are nigh impossible?!’ Arabella once again reminded herself not to make Alwin her enemy. They have to be allies.
The plan was for Alwin to make just a bit of vegetation here and there but he grew an entire forest instead.
[This is too amazing! Maybe I should marry him after all?!] Blanca wondered if she should make a very important life decision right then and there.
[Just today, he healed Blanca first who had been trying to recuperate for hundreds of years. Then he was able to rid the curse and heal me and the entirety of Safiro in just a matter of minutes. He restored the forest so easily too. Just how much mana does he have?! Even I cannot grow the forest this quickly.] Esmeralda was puzzled over Alwin’s true identity.
Arabella learned from her thoughts that Esmeralda figured right from the start that Alwin was an elf who had a lot of mana and was someone powerful. Especially since he was accompanying a dragon.
But Esmeralda didn’t expect that Alwin was so much more powerful than she originally thought.
