Chapter 93: Heavenly Spider Venom
Chapter 93: Chapter 93: Heavenly Spider Venom
After Gu Qingli sent the medicine out, she had Wuyou bring in hot water. She enjoyed a comfortable bath and ate breakfast before going to bed to catch up on sleep.
Wuyou knew her mistress was concocting medicine but had no idea where. Though extremely curious, she wouldn’t ask if her mistress didn’t volunteer the information.
Wuyou tucked Gu Qingli into bed, then took the medicine her mistress had given her and went to cultivate.
With doctors and Medicine Apprentices at the Medical Clinic looking after the three inpatients, Wuyou didn’t need to go. Her priority was to take good care of her mistress. Lately, Wuqing and Wuyou had been incredibly busy, barely having a moment’s rest. Wuyou herself wished she could lend more of a hand but was completely tied up. It looks like I’ll have to go to Blue Clouds Mountain and pick out a few servant girls to help us, she mused.
The next day, the nobleman from the Capital City arrived. Wuyou, unfazed by his esteemed status, simply placed him in a sickroom before returning to the Gu Mansion.
Gu Qingli dressed up and followed Wuyou to the Medical Clinic, heading straight to the patient’s room.
"Young Master, the divine doctor is here!" Young Master Qingchen’s attendant exclaimed upon seeing Gu Qingli and hurried back to inform his master.
Ever since waking up, the young master had been confined to his bed, recuperating. Every day, he would ask if the divine doctor had come. His legs genuinely had feeling again, a clear sign the treatment was successful, and he was eager to thank the divine doctor in person.
Young Master Qingchen’s cool eyes lit up. He asked, "Where did the divine doctor go?" Why hasn’t she come to see me? Thinking of those beautiful, bright eyes, a peculiar urge to see her welled up within him.
The attendant replied, "Young Master, the divine doctor went to another sickroom."
"Oh." So, she came to see other patients, not just me, Young Master Qingchen thought, a little disappointed. The doctor had warned him not to move yet; otherwise, injuring the stitched meridians again would bring severe consequences. He had to suppress his feelings. I’m still here, anyway. There will be plenty of time. I’ll definitely see her eventually.
Outside another sickroom, two men with powerful auras stood guard. The mistress and maid entered without giving them so much as a glance.
Inside the room, a lean young man in a green gown was tending to a youth dressed in splendid attire. The richly dressed youth appeared to be around twenty-three or twenty-four years old. He was very thin, with a handsome face that bore a slight resemblance to Xiao Yunjing. This was none other than the current Emperor’s biological younger brother, the Seventh Prince, Chu Yan.
Upon seeing Gu Qingli and Wuyou enter—two such young women—both Chu Yan and his attendant were visibly startled, a flicker of doubt crossing their eyes.
Gu Qingli’s expression was cold. She then said, "Wuyou, you examine him."
Wuyou nodded. My medical skills are no match for Mistress’s, but my knowledge of poisons might not be too far behind. These two don’t trust us yet. Well, let them see what we’re capable of.
"Extend your right hand," Wuyou instructed.
Chu Yan covered his mouth and coughed lightly before reluctantly extending his right hand. His palm was fair, the bones of his large hand well-defined and quite elegant.
Wuyou ignored the striking hand and placed her fingers on his pulse.
"Heavenly Spider Venom." After a long moment, Wuyou spoke these three words. I don’t even need to check his chest, she thought. There must be a red line extending from his heart to his palm. When that line reaches the center of his palm, the poison will claim his life. This venom is ranked last among the Ten Great Poisons, yet it’s incredibly bizarre and potent. The flare-ups cause pain excruciating enough to kill. And this man has actually endured it. Indeed, no one from that place is simple.
"Heavenly Spider Venom!" Chu Yan and the lean young man exclaimed in unison, their faces etched with shock.
One of the Ten Great Poisons! Who could have administered such a potent and bizarre venom to me? Chu Yan’s mind raced. Ever since I was five, I’ve suffered this excruciating pain in my chest annually, like a knife twisting inside, making me wish for death. Each time it flared up, I wanted to end my own life. Yet, just when I felt I was about to die from the pain, it would subside. After I turned ten, it struck twice a year. After fifteen, three times, and after twenty, four times. Year after year, I’ve endured this torment. Mother, the Empress Dowager, and my Imperial Brother exhausted all means but couldn’t identify this poison.
After the initial wave of fear and shock, Chu Yan looked at Wuyou, the earlier disbelief gone from his eyes. He said, "Little doctor, I... is it truly Heavenly Spider Venom that I’ve been poisoned with?"
Wuyou glanced at him and snorted inwardly. Weren’t you doubting us just now? Scared now, are you? She then said coolly, "If you don’t believe it, then seek advice from someone more capable."
"No, no, no! I believe you, I believe you!" Chu Yan grew anxious, waving his hands frantically as he explained. "Then, this poison... little doctor, no, little divine doctor, can you cure it? Rest assured, as long as the little divine doctor cures my poison, I’ll give you anything you ask for!"
None of the Imperial Physicians in the Imperial Hospital could diagnose what poison he had, yet this young doctor knew it after just one examination. Since Wuyou could diagnose his poison, she surely knew how to cure it. Wuyou was his last straw, his only hope for survival. He looked at Wuyou and Gu Qingli with desperate hope.
Wuyou glanced at Gu Qingli, who nodded.
Only then did Wuyou say, "This poison isn’t incurable, but it’s exceedingly troublesome. It requires a companion plant of the Heavenly Spider, the Heavenly Azure Fruit."
Chu Yan gasped sharply. "Heavenly Azure Fruit." Of course, I know what the Heavenly Azure Fruit is. Ever since I was poisoned, I’ve pored over medical texts and books on toxicology, hoping to identify the poison afflicting me. By now, my medical knowledge is comparable to that of the Imperial Physicians in the Imperial Hospital. The saying ’a long illness turns the patient into a doctor’ perfectly describes me. The Heavenly Azure Fruit, according to medical texts, grows in the snowy lands of Tianshan. The tree takes a hundred years to mature, another hundred to blossom, a hundred more to bear fruit, and a final hundred for the fruit to ripen. Each time, it yields fewer than ten fruits. Obtaining one is incredibly difficult. Without heaven-defying luck, one couldn’t even dream of getting it. People in the Daqian Kingdom, and even the entire continent, know that Tianshan is snow-capped all year round, with extremely low temperatures. Without profound internal energy, one couldn’t even think of navigating it.
At this moment, the hope that had filled Chu Yan’s heart completely vanished, and his spirits sank to rock bottom. Grief enveloped him instantly, slowly transforming into a deathly stillness.
Gu Qingli and Wuyou merely gave him a fleeting glance.
The lean young man, however, was terrified. He fell to his knees before Chu Yan, tears streaming down his face as he shook him, crying, "Master, please don’t be like this! This servant will find someone to search for it! Please, tell this servant what to do..."
Chu Yan remained motionless, as if petrified, devoid of any sign of life.
"We have the Heavenly Azure Fruit." Suddenly, a soft, sweet, and clear voice, like music from the heavens, rang out.
"What?" Chu Yan’s head snapped up, his eyes fixed intently on Gu Qingli, afraid he had misheard.
Gu Qingli nodded again. "We have the Heavenly Azure Fruit. Negotiate the terms of treatment with Wuyou, and we will detoxify you immediately."
A spark of hope rekindled in Chu Yan’s lifeless eyes, and he smiled, though his face was still deathly pale. Suddenly, he covered his face and began to sob softly, his shoulders trembling.
The mistress and her servant quietly exited the sickroom and returned to the Gu Mansion.
In the pavilion, Gu Qingli sipped the tea Wuyou had poured for her.
"Mistress, where did we get Heavenly Azure Fruit from?"
Gu Qingli smiled. "Silly girl, with your mistress’s medicinal pills, who needs Heavenly Azure Fruit? Still, you didn’t let anything slip back then and only asked now. That’s quite impressive!"
"Mistress," Wuyou pouted. Was her composure really that poor?
