Chapter 160: Ms. Wu Gives Birth

Chapter 160: Chapter 160: Ms. Wu Gives Birth

Upon hearing the information gathered by the spies from the Secret Sect about the mysteries deep within Yanshan Mountain Range, Xiao Yunjing decided to venture into the mountains to explore them thoroughly.

Even though Yanshan Mountain Range stretched between Yanshan City and Baiyue City, the pathway between these two cities didn’t pass directly through the mountain range but rather wrapped around it in a southwestern direction.

He planned to create a tunnel between the two cities, similar to the one at the Azure Dragon Mountain base.

However, he wanted it to be not just any tunnel, but one wide enough for two horse carriages to travel side by side.

Once this tunnel was completed, he would block the existing southwestern route.

Anyone wishing to reach Daqian would then have to pass through his tunnel.

This would effectively create an impenetrable barrier.

The project was ambitious, so a thorough preliminary survey was essential.

It was rumored that a reclusive group of people lived deep within the Yanshan Mountain Range. They never left the mountains, leading a self-sufficient life.

This area was now his territory, and he would not tolerate an unknown group of people residing within it.

Any potential threats would be immediately eliminated or assimilated for his use.

Additionally, he planned to relocate the people from Dragon Head Mountain, Azure Dragon Mountain, and Blue Clouds Mountain into this range, intending to establish it as a military base in the future.

Upon reaching the foot of the mountain range, Yun No. 6 dismounted to scout for an entrance.

After examining the perimeter, Yun No. 6 reported, "Master, there’s no existing path into the mountains. I’m afraid we’ll have to clear one as we go."

Xiao Yunjing nodded. "Then lead the way and clear a path."

"Yes, sir." The four men immediately began forging ahead.

「At Gu Manor in Qiyang County」

Gu Qingli had been staying with Gu Dalin’s family for the past few days. Ms. Wu, who was due to give birth, had still not delivered, and Gu Qingli’s concern had grown, so she decided to stay over at their home at night as well.

That night, everyone went to bed but slept restlessly.

At midnight, Wuqing gently woke Gu Qingli from her sleep.

"Wuqing, is Mother going into labor?" Gu Qingli asked as she quickly began to dress.

"Yes, Miss. Please don’t panic; the midwife is with her." Noticing Gu Qingli was so flustered that she had even mismatched the buttons on her clothes, Wuqing stepped forward to help her dress, adding, "Let me help you."

"Alright."

Gu Qingli verbally agreed, but her hands moved swiftly. She took a rubber band from her Space, tied her hair back, and once Wuqing had draped a heavy cloak over her shoulders, she hurried towards Ms. Wu’s courtyard.

Wuyou had also just woken up. The three of them—mistress and her two maids—hastened over together.

When they arrived, they saw Gu Dalin and his two sons pacing anxiously outside the door.

From inside the room came muffled groans of pain, mixed with the midwife’s calming voice urging Madam Gu not to be tense.

"Li’er!" Gu Dalin called out urgently upon seeing her.

"Father, don’t worry. We’ll go in and see," Gu Qingli said.

"Yes, yes, good. Li’er, hurry inside."

Gu Qingli nodded, and the three of them—mistress and maids—pushed open the door and entered.

A strong smell of blood filled the room, but having grown accustomed to it, none of them felt nauseated.

Three lamps illuminated the room, so it wasn’t too dark. On the bed, Ms. Wu lay with her legs drawn up, groaning, her face contorted in pain.

The footboard at one end of the bed had been removed, and the midwife was positioned there, attending to Ms. Wu.

Seeing Gu Qingli and her two maids enter, the midwife sighed in relief. "Eldest Miss, it’s good you’re here."

The midwife had been staying at the Gu residence for seven or eight days and was quite familiar with Gu Qingli, knowing she possessed medical knowledge.

"Auntie Qiu, has Mother’s cervix dilated yet?" Gu Qingli nodded and asked.

The midwife replied, "It has dilated about three fingers’ width. She should be ready within two hours."

"Understood. We’ll be relying on you, Auntie Qiu." Gu Qingli stepped forward, took Ms. Wu’s hand, wiped the sweat from her brow, and then asked Wuqing to bring some water.

She took the opportunity to add a little Spiritual Spring Water to it and had Wuqing help Ms. Wu sit up.

"Mother, please drink some water."

Ms. Wu, feeling rather drained, nodded and drank the water.

As soon as she drank the water, Ms. Wu felt her strength return.

"Li’er, Mother feels much better now."

"Yes, Mother, rest assured. We’re all here, so don’t worry."

"Mother isn’t worried. Mother still has to give birth to your little sister, and in the future, watch her get married and have children of her own..." Ms. Wu rambled on.

Gu Qingli felt a mix of exasperation and helplessness. Childbirth is a life-threatening gamble, a matter of snatching a life from King Yama’s grasp, and Mother is already talking about seeing her new daughter marry and have children!

Thinking about childbirth, and seeing Ms. Wu like this, Gu Qingli shuddered inwardly. She wondered what her own experience of childbirth would be like.

Sigh, I wonder how my man is doing right now?

Gu Qingli shook her head. Ms. Wu is still in labor; what am I even thinking about?

As mother and daughter continued to talk, Ms. Wu suddenly let out a heart-wrenching scream, followed by the cry of a baby, finally signaling the end of the long labor.

"It’s a little miss, and very healthy!" The midwife held up the infant, and Wuqing quickly wrapped the newborn in a prepared swaddling cloth.

"Phew." Gu Qingli let out a long breath of relief. She took the baby and looked at her. Under the lamplight, the newborn’s skin was wrinkled and not at all pretty—a far cry from the soft, cuddly image she had imagined.

She carried the baby over to Ms. Wu. "Mother, look, little sister."

Ms. Wu glanced over and managed a faint smile.

"Mother, you should rest for a while. I’ll take little sister out to show Father and the others," Gu Qingli said, seeing how weak Ms. Wu looked.

"Alright," Ms. Wu replied softly.

Gu Qingli came out holding the baby. The midwife, along with Wuqing, had finished tidying up after Ms. Wu. Wuyou was left in the room to look after her, while the others came out.

"Li’er, is your mother alright?" Gu Dalin asked as he took the baby, then headed into the room. Dashuang and Xiaoshuang followed him.

Gu Qingli opened her mouth as if to speak, but then simply shook her head and sat down in the living room.

The midwife, also exhausted, sat down to rest.

A servant immediately brought the midwife a basin of hot water.

"Auntie Qiu, please wash up and then go get some sleep. We’ll watch over things here," Gu Qingli said, looking at the midwife’s tired face. Elderly people really can’t handle staying up all night, she thought.

"Alright."

The midwife nodded; she was indeed tired. Thank goodness Madam Gu’s delivery was smooth, she thought. Otherwise, I really don’t think I could have lasted. If I had fainted from exhaustion before the baby was even born, I’d have become a laughingstock. Sigh, I’m getting old and useless, the midwife lamented inwardly.

After washing up, she followed an old female servant to go rest.

"Miss, aren’t you going to sleep?" Wuqing asked.

"I’m fine. I’ll stay a little longer. After Mother gives birth, we still need to watch out for any potential postpartum hemorrhage."

Wuqing nodded. She understood that a woman wasn’t necessarily out of danger immediately after childbirth, so she said no more and simply kept Gu Qingli company in the living room.

Just then, Dashuang came out holding the baby, cooing and fussing over her with delight, while Xiaoshuang followed behind, watching.

Watching this scene, Gu Qingli couldn’t help but smile.

"Wuyou, why did you come out?" Gu Qingli asked, as Wuyou emerged just then.

Wuyou replied, "Master Gu asked me to come out. Miss, you should go to sleep. Madam has fallen asleep and should be fine. I just spoke with Master Gu; he said they will call you immediately if any issues arise."

Gu Qingli frowned. Ms. Wu isn’t out of the critical period yet. If something happens, it would take several minutes for them to run over and get me, and that could delay crucial treatment. Sometimes, those few minutes can make all the difference.
