Chapter 406: News about Antonio’s death
The sky darkened.
Sinclair and Camilla left the hospital, heading toward the outskirts of E City’s downtown area.
"Sweetheart, aren’t we going back tonight?"
"No," Sinclair replied, his arm tightening around Camilla’s slender waist.
His dark eyes, usually calm and unreadable, churned with something unspoken.
"There’s still unfinished business."
Unfinished business?
Camilla had been so engrossed in her lively chat with Tiffany that she’d clearly forgotten the fire she’d started earlier in the car.
"Tidying up loose ends?"
Antonio wasn’t an ordinary man. His death didn’t mean this was over. Loose ends?
Sinclair curved his lips slightly and responded with a nonchalant hum.
Camilla didn’t press further.
Fine.
This gave her the perfect opportunity to meet Vicente and inquire about her grandfather’s whereabouts.
"President Mega," A plainly dressed young man in a full business suit knocked twice before entering.
"Out in the suburbs, none of the Mega family members who went with Mr. Antonio made it back."
"Didn’t make it back" meant they never would. Including Antonio.
Stephen had initially assumed Sinclair would detain Antonio first, using him as leverage against the main family.
Yet, he had him killed outright.
This was a blatant declaration—no pretense left.
"Sinclair is far more ruthless than I anticipated," Stephen leaned lazily against the back of his wheelchair, his gaze drifting toward the window as his eyes narrowed.
His tone, though detached, carried undisguised admiration—and wariness.
"No wonder he secured his position as head of the Luther Family in just a few short years and has maintained dominance as the titan of San Francisco’s business world till now."
To think they had actually considered manipulating someone like him.
The corner of Stephen’s lips curled into a self-deprecating smirk, though it vanished as quickly as it appeared.
"Recall our people. No more surveillance."
"Yes, sir."
The young man nodded but didn’t leave. "What about the old estate?"
The ones responsible for the state Stephen was in now were those very elders from the ancestral home.
Even Antonio, who was currently in trouble, wasn’t entirely innocent.
Given this opportunity, they could easily stir the pot and let the two sides tear each other apart—while they reaped the rewards.
Stephen shook his head, his low voice laced with a chilling edge.
"Wait and see."
Though Sinclair couldn’t be used as a pawn, he could still be a valuable ally.
Something told him this man would be the key to reaching greater heights.
The Mega Family Mansion.
Though it was late at night, the old mansion was ablaze with lights both inside and out.
Grandma Mega sat stiffly on the main sofa in the living room, her expression dark.
Mr. and Mrs. Mega sat rigidly on either side, their faces equally cold.
The atmosphere in the room was heavy with tension.
"Mother," Mrs. Mega began, forcing a strained smile under her husband’s prompting gaze.
"It’s getting late.
You should rest—we’ll wait here for Antonio."
Antonio had abruptly canceled all his important meetings and left the company, sparking outrage among the board members and sending grandma into a fury.
She had tried calling him to warn him to return immediately, but the boy hadn’t even picked up.
And now, here they were.
If they didn’t convince the old lady to retire soon, who knew what kind of scene would erupt when Antonio finally came home.
"Exactly," Mr. Mega chimed in with a nod.
"You can discipline him tomorrow after you’ve rested..."
"Enough," Grandma Mega but sharp-eyed Madam Mega remained seated, her piercing gaze sweeping over the couple.
"The fact that Antonio has grown into someone who disregards the bigger picture is entirely your fault as his parents.
Instead of wasting time placating an old woman like me, you’d do better to reflect on your own failures."
Mr. and Mrs. Mega, both well into their fifties, flushed with humiliation at the scathing reprimand.
But with true authority in the Mega family resting solely in the matriarch’s hands, they could only swallow their resentment, bowing their heads in silence.
Madam Mega let out a cold scoff before shifting her attention toward the main door.
While the others had no idea where her grandson had gone, she knew all too well.
All for the sake of some woman—he had even abandoned a crucial corporate meeting.
Such sentimentality, such recklessness.
How could she possibly rely on him to suppress that bastard Stephen?
A shadow flickered in the depths of her eyes. She needed to have that woman dealt with—quickly.
Only then could Antonio refocus his mind and devote himself entirely to the family business.
Just as Madam Mega’s eyes narrowed with calculation, the butler rushed in, his face ashen and his steps frantic.
"Madam... Sir... Madam... Something terrible has happened!"
Mrs. Mega was startled by the sudden commotion, her hand jerking as she held the teacup.
The freshly brewed tea spilled all over her lap.
"Ouch!" she cried out, hastily dabbing at the mess with a napkin before shooting the butler an irritated glare.
"What on earth could be so urgent that you’d forget all decorum?"
Grandma Mega cast a sidelong glance at her daughter-in-law, and Mrs. Mega immediately fell silent—though the anger still simmered in her eyes as she shot the butler another reproachful look.
Ignoring her, the old lady turned her attention to the visibly distressed butler.
"Well?
Out with it—what’s happened?"
"The men sent to find Mr. Antonio... they said—" Under Grandma Mega’s stern, icy gaze, the butler swallowed hard.
The unspoken words seemed to weigh a thousand pounds on his tongue.
Grandma Mega narrowed her eyes, her aged face darkening with displeasure.
"Antonio refused to come back?"
Mr. and Mrs. Mega also fixed their piercing stares on the butler, their expressions demanding answers.
"N-no, that’s not it," the butler stammered, unable to meet their eyes.
The butler lowered his head, his voice trembling uncontrollably.
"The men reported... that the villa where Mr. Antonio was staying exploded... causing a massive fire.
No one inside... made it out alive..."
The butler stood rooted to the spot, bracing himself after mustering every ounce of courage to deliver the news.
The butler held his breath, waiting for the storm that was sure to follow.
An explosion at the villa?
No survivors?
Such simple words, yet they struck grandma Mega and the others like a thunderbolt.
