Chapter 995: Chapter 995: Every Sentence Strikes Right to the Heart
"Mother-in-law, that girl Xuexue is completely out of line; does she think the General’s Mansion is still some country backwater where she can gallivant around as she pleases? She doesn’t even consider that the daughters of well-established families in the Capital all adhere to the rule of ’not stepping outside the main door nor crossing the threshold of the inner gate.’ It’s bad enough that she dashes about during the day, but to actually not come home until deep in the night? People who don’t know better might think our illustrious family has lost its way! Mother-in-law, if word of this spreads, it would be so detrimental to our General’s Mansion!"
Concubine Tang knew the Old Madam was particular about saving face, so when she spoke, it was with words that pierced right to the Old Madam’s heart.
Ever since she entered the room, nearly half a shichen had passed, and her mouth hadn’t stopped listing Xuexue’s faults; the Old Madam’s face was growing darker the more she listened. Although she knew that Concubine Tang and Xuexue were at odds and that there must be some exaggeration, the fact that Xuexue came home late at night was undeniable.
"Smack!"
Furiously, the Old Madam slammed the table and cursed vehemently, "This is outrageous! That damn girl, she’s getting more and more out of line. Even if she takes charge of the household, she still must adhere to the rules; I, this old woman, am not dead yet!"
"Mother-in-law, Xuexue is too young, simply not cut out for managing a household."
Seizing the opportunity while the Old Madam was angry, Concubine Tang wanted to take down Xuexue, to have her removed from the position of charge.
At that moment, the Old Madam was almost bursting with rage and couldn’t hear a word she said; she just turned to the Old Maid by her side and ordered, "Hurry up and go to the front gate. Once Miss returns, have her come here immediately."
"As you command, Old Madam."
With the utmost respect, the Old Maid duly exited.
At the front gate.
Xuexue and Little Baby had just returned to the entrance of the mansion when they were stopped by the Old Maid.
"Miss, the Old Madam summons you."
Xuexue wasn’t at all surprised to be intercepted by the Old Maid right at the gate. She would have found it strange if things were calm and quiet in the mansion.
"Alright!"
Xuexue replied before telling Little Baby, "You go back first and wait for me, I’ll return after I’ve seen Grandmother."
"Mhm! Okay." Little Baby blinked playfully, a look of self-possession on his face.
Waving her hand to him, Xuexue followed the Old Maid towards the Refreshing Courtyard.
While walking, the Old Maid turned to sneak peeks at Xuexue, noticing her composed expression; she showed no sign of surprise.
Unable to hold back any longer, the Old Maid stopped, turned to Xuexue, and asked, "Miss, aren’t you curious why the Old Madam wants to see you at the Refreshing Courtyard?"
"What’s there to be curious about? Is it not just because I returned a little late? Doesn’t Grandmother just want me to go there to reassure her that I’m safe?"
"My goodness! Miss, you really do think too simply."
"What do you mean? Is that not the reason?" Xuexue pretended to be clueless.
"Of course not; I cannot bear to see Miss wronged by a villain, so I came to inform you ahead of time. Actually, this is all stirred up by Concubine Tang, and right now, she is at the Old Madam’s place, lodging complaints against you!"
Xuexue feigned great shock, asking, "Complaints? What complaints against me?"
"She’s accusing you of coming home late at night and tarnishing the reputation of the General’s Mansion."
This Old Maid was the personal attendant of the Old Madam, and her every move would surely be reported to the madam; Xuexue understood this well.
"Isn’t it just that I was delayed by some matter while handling affairs outside? How does that equate to tarnishing the reputation of the General’s Mansion?" Xuexue looked genuinely aggrieved, on the verge of tears—pitiful to behold.
"There, there! Don’t feel too wronged. I will find the time to discuss this with the Old Madam; Miss, just be at ease."
With that, the Old Maid turned her head and continued walking.
