Chapter 959: Chapter 959: The Old Country Granny
Marrying into the Royal Family is also something she has long anticipated.
But how easy is it to become the principal wife?
She has been longing for this dream for over a decade, and yet it remains unfulfilled!
If Xuexue had not returned to the General’s Mansion, perhaps there would have been a greater chance.
But now that Xuexue, as the Eldest Legitimate Daughter, has returned to the General’s Mansion,
Situ Yongjie has made a complete one hundred and eighty-degree turn towards her.
"Qinger, don’t be anxious. Isn’t there still a few months left? In a few days, when Mother is free, we’ll make a trip to Prince Pu’s Mansion and have your maternal grandfather help us think of a solution."
The last two times, the matters Situtu Qinger had tasked Prince Pu with both ended in failure, and only with the Fourth Prince’s assistance was she spared from serving as a concubine in the War Prince’s Mansion. Not to mention the incident at Qinger Building, Prince Pu not only failed to help but also tarnished his own reputation.
Therefore, when Auntie Tang mentioned Prince Pu, Situtu Qinger expressed her disdain: "Mother always said how capable Grandfather is. From what I see, he’s nothing special. Such a trivial matter, and he can’t even handle it properly. He’s supposed to be a Prince, yet he’s not afraid of losing face completely."
"You girl, how can you speak like this! Even if your maternal grandfather isn’t capable, he’s genuinely trying to help you. As his granddaughter, how can you speak of him like this?"
"My grandfather is just an idle Prince, without power or influence, completely unable to help us. Mother, you’d better not go to him for help."
"You are young and naive; what do you understand? No matter how unworthy your grandfather is, he’s still a Prince. Even The Emperor grants him some thin face. One word from him holds more weight than a hundred from those with power and influence." Auntie Tang was not pleased with her daughter speaking ill of her own father.
"Mother, Qinger was wrong, please don’t be angry." Seeing her mother’s face cloud over, Situtu Qinger quickly adjusted her tone.
"In the future, you’re not allowed to speak of your maternal grandfather like that."
"Qinger understands, Mother, please don’t be angry."
"Alright, you can go back now. Mother is tired and needs to rest for a while. We’ll go to your maternal grandfather for help in a few days." Auntie Tang, looking exhausted, waved her hand.
"Mother, please rest well. Qinger will take her leave now."
"Mhm, go."
Situdu Qinger, accompanied by her maid, turned and left.
The next day.
Early in the morning, when the sky was just getting light, two carriages arrived at the entrance of the General’s Mansion.
The guards at the entrance found it odd. Who would visit the General’s Mansion so early in the morning? It’s quite impertinent; at this hour, the Masters of the mansion probably have not yet risen. It’s too early for a visit to another’s home.
The guard was just about to step forward to check.
One of the curtains of the carriage was lifted by a hand as gnarled as kindling, and then, an old woman with a face full of wrinkles stepped down.
She was wearing a garment of coarse cloth which, among the rural folks, would be considered good quality, but in the Capital, it appeared so rustic it was practically earthen.
"Good gracious! This is the General’s Mansion, isn’t it? So splendid! Oh, dear, look at those two stone lions at the entrance, how large and majestic they are! They almost look real." The old woman babbled on as she eagerly stepped forward and caressed the stone lions, her face full of astonishment.
The expression on the face of the guard at the gate darkened instantaneously.
At a glance, it was clear that this old woman was a country bumpkin who had never seen the world.
"Scram, this isn’t a place for the likes of you to run wild. Get going," the guard stepped forward to shoo her away.
The old woman didn’t realize what was happening at first and was pushed along for a few steps, growing irritated: "I’m telling you, this here is my granddaughter’s home, treat me with some respect, or you’ll be sorry."
A country old woman actually daring to talk back to them like this was simply preposterous. The guards were getting angry: "Where do these Unruly People come from, making noise at the entrance of the General’s Mansion? Believe it or not, we could take you to the government office for military detention."
