Chapter 639: Chapter 639: Wolves Pack Attack Chapter 639: Chapter 639: Wolves Pack Attack Unexpectedly, Xuexue added another remark, “Mother, you can say that to anyone, just not to Young Master Mo.”

Madam Xie was utterly bewildered, “Why not!”

Xuexue, ignoring the extremely embarrassed Mo Shaoxing beside her, continued fluently, “Young Master Mo is well-versed in the Book of Sages and values propriety and integrity above all. How could he partake in such impropriety as men and women sitting together?”

Mo Shaoxing stiffened again and could only straighten up reluctantly, “Sister Xuexue is right. I have been rude.”

“Of course you were rude. We have no ties with your family, so don’t call me ‘sister’ anymore to avoid any misunderstandings.” Xiuzhi always found herself in trouble because of him; Xuexue simply didn’t like him.

“Auntie, Aunt Li, please enjoy your meal. I shall take my leave,” said Mo Daoyan, making a bow before turning to leave.

Seeing his dejected demeanor, Madam Xie felt somewhat sympathetic, “Xuexue, we all are from the same village. You shouldn’t treat him like this. The village head has helped us a lot after all.”

“The village head is the village head, he is he; they should not be confused,” Xuexue insisted.

“You child, always so obstinate! They are clearly one family; how can you separate them?”

Finally seeing Xuexue’s dislike for Mo Shaoxing and her deliberate difficulty, Aunt Li said to Madam Xie, “Young sister, let’s not meddle in the affairs of the young ones. Let’s eat now; the food is getting cold.” With that, she placed a meatball in Madam Xie’s bowl.

“Ah!” Madam Xie also reached for a piece of roast chicken for Aunt Li’s bowl, “Here, you eat too.”

“We’re all family; no need for formalities,” Aunt Li already considered Madam Xie and her family as her own.

“Exactly, we are all family,” Madam Xie said with a joyful smile. In Mo Family Village, Aunt Li was the kindest to them.

The table was set with eight dishes and one soup, mostly meat dishes. Knowing the villagers’ rare access to meat, Xuexue had purposely arranged for more meat dishes, leaving only one vegetable dish and even the soup was chicken broth. For the villagers, this meal was quite a feast, even better than what they would have during festivals.

General Situ and the county magistrate were drinking heavily, becoming profoundly drunk, staggering as they walked. Eventually, several guards had to support them back.

The night grew deep and quiet, and the villagers gradually dispersed, leaving a mess behind.

About a dozen villagers stayed behind to clean up.

The night deepened, and the village gradually quietened down, with only sporadic insect chirps and brief gusts of wind whispering through.

Little Tiger suddenly ran out from Xie Residence, ears pricked up, listening intently.

“Awooo…!”

A long, not very loud howl carried into the village from outside.

“Meow meow!” Little Tiger dashed towards the village outskirts.

In her room, Xuexue who had already settled down to sleep, suddenly shot her eyes open, sitting up to listen carefully.

All around, silence resumed, as if that previous howl had been merely an illusion.

Xuexue shook her head, thinking it might just have been a hallucination, there wasn’t really any howl of the wolves, thus she prepared to lie down and continue sleeping.

“Awooo…!”

Once again, several clear howls of wolves rose, this time, Xuexue couldn’t stay calm any longer. She leapt from her bed, threw on her clothes, and rushed outside.

“Ouch!”

As she rushed to the yard, she collided with something and tumbled to the ground.

“Who is it? Why aren’t you asleep at this hour, rushing about like this!” a commanding voice sounded in the darkness.
