Madam Ruan’s tone turned threatening, “You need to understand that this isn’t your meat; you’re just helping out. Be careful, or I might tell Xuexue about this.”

The woman’s face darkened when she heard this and her meat chopping came to a halt, “Madam Ruan, what are you implying?”

“Nothing much, I just want some roasted chicken too.”

The woman finally got the gist of Madam Ruan’s intentions; this nasty woman was also hankering for some meat and was using this incident to intimidate her.

“Go on, stop causing trouble. If you want some, come early tonight,” The woman said impatiently, and continued chopping meat, her cleaver pounding the chopping board, sending small pieces of meat flying everywhere.

Seeing she was being ignored, Madam Ruan grew pissed, “You’re really not afraid I’ll tell Xuexue?”

“Go ahead if you’re so inclined; it’s not me who ate it after all. I just gave it to the children. If Xuexue is so generous to invite the whole village for a meal, surely she wouldn’t fuss over a few kids,” the woman retorted.

“I shouldn’t miss out as well. Hurry up, chop some for me now.”

Madam Ruan earnestly watched the roasted chicken on the chopping board, reaching out to grab a piece for a taste, but the woman slapped her hand away: “Such a grown person, have you no shame? Quibbling with some kids? If you want to eat, come earlier tonight, and you can have as much as you like without anyone judging you.”

“I want to eat now,” declared Madam Ruan, brash and unreasonable.

The woman got angry too and turned to shout loudly towards the ancestral hall, “Village head, village head, come out and see this troublemaker Madam Ruan is causing! How are we supposed to work like this?”

Wasn’t the village head supposed to be at the Xie Residence? Why would he be here?

When Madam Ruan heard that the village head might be inside the ancestral hall, she took off running.
