Chapter 626 - Chapter 626 Chapter 626 Climbing the Wall into the Yard
Chapter 626: Chapter 626 Climbing the Wall into the Yard Chapter 626: Chapter 626 Climbing the Wall into the Yard General Situ’s face turned dark, and the county magistrate glanced at him before quickly saying, “Let’s hear it then.”
Thus, the village head recounted the entire cause and sequence of events.
Situ Yongjie’s frown deepened as he listened. He had not expected the eldest legitimate daughter of the prestigious General’s Mansion to fall on such hard times among common folk, and he felt both sorrowful and guilty.
Old Lady Mo thought she had substantial grounds and added, “Esteemed officials, please judge for this poor woman. Even if I am in the wrong, I am still an elder. That little cheap person actually dared to treat me like this, showing not a shred of filial piety, not fearing the heavens’ thunderous punishment.”
“Drag her out and give her fifty heavy floggings,” General Situ, unable to contain his anger any longer, bellowed.
Indeed, having only recently learned of Xuexue’s existence, he was already filled with guilt, feeling that he had let his deceased wife down. Now, hearing from the village head about Xuexue’s life in Mo Family Village, how she didn’t even have enough food to eat and was often bullied by Old Lady Mo, he felt his anger flare up.
Old Lady Mo didn’t even know what had happened when two guards dragged her away and began beating her with sticks until she howled like a slaughtered pig, clueless as to how she had offended these nobles.
The group knocked at the Xie Residence’s gate for a long time without anyone answering. Knowing that knocking any further would be useless, the village head surmised that Madam Xie and her daughters must have feared trouble from Old Lady Mo and thus dared not open the door. He then offered a plan to the county magistrate: to have two Yamen Runners climb over the wall and open the gate from the inside.
Upon hearing this, the county magistrate felt the idea was feasible and sought General Situ’s opinion.
“I’m just worried if this will scare Xuexue,” said General Situ with some hesitation.
Village head: “No, it won’t. The mother and daughters always trust me. Seeing that I am here, they won’t be afraid.”
“Alright then,” General Situ finally agreed.
So, the county magistrate instructed two Yamen Runners to climb over the wall into the Xie Residence and open the gates.
Concerned that too many people entering might frighten Xuexue, General Situ asked his subordinates to wait outside the main gate while he, along with the county magistrate and the village head, entered the house.
Madam Xie and her daughters had just finished lunch and were cleaning up their bowls and chopsticks.
Suddenly, they looked up to see several men of unknown identity burst in…
“Ah…!”
“Clang!”
Startled, Madam Xie dropped all the bowls and chopsticks in her hands, shattering them on the floor.
Seated nearby with her back to the door and unaware of the men who had entered, Xuexue saw Madam Xie’s panicked face and asked in confusion, “Mother, what’s wrong?”
“Someone… came in.”
Madam Xie, trembling, pointed toward the doorway. She did not recognize the intruders and thought they were robbers who had come to loot the house.
“Who is it?” Xuexue turned around as she removed the scraps of cloth stuffed in her ears.
“Madam Xie, Xuexue, don’t be scared. It’s me,” said the village head, stepping out from behind them.
Xuexue, looking surprised, turned to him and asked, “Uncle Village Chief, how did you get into our home?”
As she looked further back, she even saw the county magistrate and wondered to herself, what could the county magistrate want at our house?
“Oh my! Getting into your place really wasn’t easy. We called out for a long time outside, but you just wouldn’t open the door. We really had no choice but to ask the two Yamen Runner brothers to climb the wall and open the main gate for us to get in,” the village head explained as he wiped the sweat from his brow.
Xuexue then understood the situation and said with an embarrassed smile, “We had no choice; our grandmother is just too troublesome to deal with, and we mother and daughter couldn’t win against her, so we had to hide from her.”
