Chapter 435 - Chapter 435 Chapter 435

Chapter 435: Chapter 435 Chapter 435: Chapter 435 Big Bull and Xuexue involuntarily exchanged glances, then, together, they turned to the village head and asked in unison, “What brings the county magistrate to our village?”

Their minds were so in sync, which the village head found not at all surprising; after all, they were always seen together, more intimate than a real husband and wife.

“I’m not sure, I just heard that he’s coming to Mo Family Village tomorrow. I was so happy that no sooner had the messenger left than I came over to share the news with you all.”

The village head could hardly contain his excitement. Ever since he had dined with the county magistrate in County Town, he’d been boasting all over that their family’s ancestral grave was emitting a blue smoke, indicating good fortune, such that even the county magistrate had invited him to dine.

“Uncle Village Chief, you are the village head; the county magistrate is coming to see you about official business, and that’s quite normal. We common folk shouldn’t meddle unnecessarily, hehe…” Xuexue said with a smile while declining. With the issues at Qinger Building already resolved, there was no need to have further contact with the county magistrate.

The village head waved his hand dismissively, “No, that won’t do. You two have dined with the county magistrate before. You must accompany us tomorrow. I believe the county magistrate likes the both of you, especially Big Bull, with your capacity for drink.”

The last time in County Town, when several people were drinking together, the village head got utterly plastered, while Big Bull was completely fine and even helped him home. It seemed this young fellow could really hold his liquor! Having him accompany the county magistrate was definitely the right move, and the village head had been planning on it.

Big Bull put down the hatchet he was holding, turned his head, and said to Xuexue, “Wife, you needn’t worry. My capacity for drink is excellent; I can surely drink the county magistrate under the table.”

The village head laughed as soon as he heard this: “You young man! You truly are fearless because you are ignorant.”

“It’s just drinking; no worries, I can drink it like water.”

At this moment, Big Bull’s tone had reverted to his former foolish manner.

Xuexue inwardly expressed her disdain, thinking that he was clearly a big bad wolf pretending to be a little white rabbit; this guy was too sly. She would have to be more cautious in the future, lest she be fooled and end up naively counting money for him.

She had once thought him to be very honest, but since learning of his regained memory, she had revised this view. His ability to switch faces was incredibly fast; while he could be shrewdly discussing matters with her one moment, he’d play the fool the moment someone came looking for him. It was chameleon-like, leaving her stunned–could this be the same honest and simplistic Big Bull she once knew?

If he didn’t look exactly the same, she would have suspected a switch with someone else.

The village head’s smile held a deeper meaning: “Big Bull! The county magistrate is like a parental official to us. When it’s time to yield, you should give in a little, afford him some respect. It’s also about giving face to Uncle Village Chief. What do you think?”

“Even when drinking, I should yield?”

“Right! The county magistrate is visiting our village, and the villagers from all around the neighborhood are watching. We can’t afford to make a laughing stock of him.”

Big Bull turned his head to Xuexue and asked with a look of a henpecked husband, “Wife, what do you think?”

What does your drinking have to do with me? Xuexue criticized inwardly but maintained a beaming smile and said, “Uncle Village Chief has been good to us, it’s right to listen to him.”

Big Bull gave no face to the village head: “I’ll listen to my wife’s words. Whatever she says goes.”

“Alright, then.”

With no way to outsmart his act of playing dumb, Xuexue could only offer the village head a helpless smile.

The villagers all knew that Big Bull was not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and the village head shared that belief, not taking it to heart. After chatting for a while longer about ensuring their company for the meal upon the county magistrate’s arrival, he bid them farewell and scampered home.
