Chapter 278 - Chapter 278 Chapter 278 Talking Nonsense
Chapter 278: Chapter 278: Talking Nonsense Chapter 278: Chapter 278: Talking Nonsense The old granny jumped in fright and thought to herself, “Lady Li has such nerve to ask about someone else’s scandal right to their face, without any sense of taboo!” She quickly tugged Lady Li’s sleeve and whispered, “Let it be, don’t ask anymore, these are other people’s family matters.”
“No way, I must ask, otherwise you all will accuse me of spouting nonsense.” Lady Li was relentless, purposeful in her actions. After all, she had taken a dislike to Big Bull and Xuexue and by extension, couldn’t bear to look at Madam Xie either.
Madam Xie, completely confused, asked with a dumbfounded expression, “What’s the matter?”
“Last night, didn’t Xuexue come back only in the dead of night?” Lady Li asked triumphantly.
The women by the river, busy washing clothes, all pricked up their ears, listening in with gossip-hungry anticipation.
Madam Xie, being honest and straightforward without any ulterior motives, replied, “Yes! She was delayed in town on business, didn’t catch the ox cart back, and had to walk, taking her half the night.”
“Kikiki…!”
Upon hearing this, Lady Li couldn’t help but laugh smugly, all the while saying to the women by the river, “You hear that, you hear that, have I been talking nonsense?”
The women nearby instantly widened their eyes in shock, “Oh my! Madam Xie, Xuexue has had such a big scandal, and you, her own mother, are remaining so calm, washing clothes here instead of comforting her properly. How is a girl to handle such a scandal in the future?”
“Exactly, be careful she doesn’t take it too hard and hang herself; what will you and Chuner do then?”
The women were all speaking at once, leaving Madam Xie utterly confused. She looked at them baffled and asked, “What exactly happened? I’m really confused.”
“The matter of Xuexue losing her virginity, the whole village knows about it now.”
Madam Xie was shocked upon hearing this, “Who’s the blabbermouth spreading that?”
The crowd unanimously pointed at Lady Li, “Her! She’s been spreading it by the riverside since early morning, and by now, probably the whole Mo Family Village knows about it.”
“You wretched woman, why would you ruin my daughter’s reputation? What has she ever done to you?” Madam Xie, who was usually timid and afraid to cause trouble, suddenly burst into a rage, cursing Lady Li furiously.
Upon hearing this, everyone realized that things might not be as Lady Li had claimed. They continued with their laundry while their ears remained perked up for this unfolding drama.
“Why are you going back on your word now? You just said very clearly that Xuexue came back late last night, everyone heard it.” Lady Li thought she had caught a strong piece of evidence.
“My daughter did come back from town late at night, but does coming back late mean she’s lost her virginity? Are you mad? Have you got nothing better to do than to make these vile accusations?” Madam Xie glared fiercely, fuming with anger–and rightly so, for any mother would be furious if her daughter’s reputation was slandered like this.
The women, hearing this, all nodded their heads in agreement, “That’s right, Lady Li, you really shouldn’t run your mouth off, tarnishing Xuexue’s reputation.”
Lady Li, defiant and unyielding, retorted, “I swear to heaven, I heard everything very clearly last night. If Xuexue hadn’t lost her virginity, Madam Xie and Chuner wouldn’t have been under the locust tree at the village entrance, crying all night long. The sound was spine-chilling.”
The more Madam Xie heard, the angrier she got, “You dead woman, if my daughter doesn’t come home at night, as a mother, wouldn’t I worry and cry? Keep spouting rubbish, and see if I don’t tear your mouth apart.”
Now everyone was clear on the situation; it appeared that Lady Li was spreading rumors again, which was utterly wrong. Before, it was only small talk about the Owner’s failings or the neighbors’ misgivings, but this time, she had ruined a young girl’s reputation–something much more serious. The crowd began to criticize Lady Li unanimously.
