Chapter 1130: Chapter 1130: Crafty and Sly Old Fox
Wealthy Master Zhang looked troubled, raising his head to glance at Prince Pu, who wore an enigmatic smile, then turned to his utterly baffled daughter.
Suddenly, with a thud, he fell to his knees before Prince Pu, banging his head desperately. "Prince, I beg you, please spare my daughter. She is not suited to marry into the Prince’s Mansion."
Prince Pu’s face immediately darkened. "I never asked you to marry off your daughter. I simply told you to repay your debt—didn’t you understand?"
That was precisely his intention, yet Prince Pu, cunning as he was, adamantly denied it.
Wealthy Master Zhang looked utterly miserable, kneeling on the ground without a clue what to do.
Prince Pu shot him a sidelong glance and said with a charitable air, "Since you can’t repay the silver, I happen to have a compromise. I wonder if you’d be willing."
"Please, Prince, tell me."
"Since you’re unable to repay the silver, I’ll be merciful. I can’t bear to see you sell off your family property for this debt. It just so happens that our mansion is in need of a maid. Miss Zhang can come to our Prince Pu’s Mansion to work off the debt."
"What? You want me to be a maid?" Miss Zhang raised her head in astonishment.
Though her family wasn’t particularly wealthy, Miss Zhang had grown up pampered by Wealthy Master Zhang. She had always been surrounded by servants, and the idea of becoming a maid at Prince Pu’s Mansion was utterly shocking. She couldn’t believe that such a fate would ever befall her.
Wealthy Master Zhang went pale upon hearing this. It dawned on him that Prince Pu intended to gain something for nothing.
However, considering the Prince’s high status, ordinary folks like them couldn’t afford to provoke him. While his daughter didn’t understand, Wealthy Master Zhang was quite clear about the consequences. Once she entered the Prince Pu’s Mansion as a maid, her fate—whether life or death—would rest entirely in the hands of her masters. By then, even her lifelong happiness would hinge on just a word from Prince Pu.
Thinking of this, he was seething with frustration.
If he had known earlier, he would have consented to his daughter becoming Prince Pu’s concubine, instead of ending up as a mere maid.
Prince Pu, sensing the time was ripe, asked again, "Wealthy Master Zhang, have you made up your mind?"
Wealthy Master Zhang looked as if the world was crumbling before him, his expression utterly dejected. He managed a feeble cry, "Prince...!"
"Well? You’ve reconsidered, haven’t you?" Prince Pu, with a somewhat smug look on his face, thought he had successfully secured a chambermaid for his son.
Unexpectedly, Wealthy Master Zhang said, "My daughter has been pampered since childhood. I fear she wouldn’t be able to handle the duties of a maid."
Prince Pu’s expression hardened, his thoughts darkened. These unruly peasants really didn’t know their place—to remain obstinate even on the brink of ruin.
"If that’s the case, I won’t force you. Just pay twenty thousand taels of silver for medicine fees then."
As soon as Prince Pu finished speaking, a chorus of astonished gasps resounded around him...
"Good heavens! What kind of medicine costs twenty thousand taels of silver? That’s outrageous!"
"Exactly! What kind of medicine did Young Master Tang take that’s so expensive?"
"Could it be that the Prince Pu’s Mansion is intentionally extorting people?"
Everyone whispered amongst themselves, chatter flowing endlessly.
Hearing these rumors, Prince Pu’s face grew darker by the moment.
The steward, a man proficient at observing words and moods, noted Prince Pu’s displeasure. He immediately turned on the gossiping crowd and shouted, "You unruly people, stop spouting nonsense if you don’t understand! Last night, our Young Master was nearly mauled to death by a wolfhound. You can’t imagine how much it cost to save him. Twenty thousand silver, what’s that in comparison?"
After all, regardless of how the Prince’s Mansion behaved, it wasn’t a place common folk dared to meddle in. Upon hearing the steward’s words, everyone fell silent, no one daring to make a sound.
Wealthy Master Zhang turned to look at his daughter, utterly unsure of what decision to make in the moment.
