Chapter 1112: Chapter 1112 A Stench Hits the Face
"Father!"
The little boy behind them shrieked in utter despair.
Before the scream could even finish, the dwarf plunged a blade straight into his heart, and the boy collapsed, dead on the spot.
These two actions flowed like water, occurring in the blink of an eye.
The people lining up at the city gate to enter seemed to hear a piercing cry, yet it was so brief that they all wondered if they’d merely imagined it...
"Hey! Did you hear that? Just now I think I heard someone screaming," a strong man carrying baskets couldn’t help but ask the person next to him.
"No, you must’ve heard wrong."
The bustling activity at the city gate, where guards were inspecting everyone, made it hard for people to focus properly.
The strong man thought he might have misheard, so he dismissed it and focused solely on standing in line, ready to handle his matters in the city.
The dwarf’s ruthless act left Zhang San stunned: "L-l-little brother, w-what are you doing?"
"Killing people! Didn’t you see?"
The dwarf appeared unfazed—after all, murder was as ordinary to him as eating a meal. Killing two people at once was trivial and stirred no emotions in him.
Zhang San was different. Despite being imprisoned by the Prime Minister for over a decade, he had been a straightforward Nong family man back in the countryside. He’d seen plenty of pigs and sheep slaughtered, but the only time he witnessed someone being killed was when the Prime Minister personally murdered his son. Watching the dwarf kill left him utterly shaken—a life taken so lightly! How could someone kill on a whim?
The dwarf dragged the child’s corpse into a rundown house, stripped the body of its clothing and dressed himself in it. When everything was set, he noticed Zhang San still standing dumbly outside.
"Hey! What are you doing? Why haven’t you changed yet?"
"W-where are the clothes?" Zhang San hadn’t yet processed what was happening, still scared by the dwarf’s brutal methods.
"Aren’t they right there?" The dwarf motioned at the boy’s corpse lying on the ground.
"W-what? Y-you want me to wear a dead person’s clothes?" Zhang San exclaimed in disbelief.
"What’s so strange about that? I’m wearing them too—just hurry up and change. Don’t waste the effort I’ve gone to." The dwarf, usually arrogant and dismissive, refrained from calling himself "little master," perhaps because Zhang San had been particularly kind to him.
"Little brother, surely you didn’t kill someone just for a change of clothes?"
"Of course! Our clothes are filthy and tattered; anyone who sees us will know something’s up—we wouldn’t even make it through the city gates. Also, your hair and beard—I’ll shave them off for you." As he spoke, the dwarf pulled out the dagger he’d just used for the murders and approached Zhang San.
"W-what are you doing?"
As the icy glint of the dagger caught Zhang San’s eye, he stumbled backward step by step, his body trembling. The memory of the two people the dwarf had killed with that blade was fresh; it terrified him.
"Do you want to get into the city or not?"
"Of course, I do."
"Then stop hesitating and get over here!" The dwarf was starting to lose patience.
"W-what are you doing?"
"Shaving your beard and cleaning up your hair."
"Y-you’re not trying to kill me, are you?"
"Why would I kill you? There’s no benefit in it." The dwarf replied irritably.
Thinking it over, Zhang San realized the dwarf was right. They were now in the same boat, and their enemies were high-ranking officials in the Imperial court—they needed to support each other.
Half a Cup of Tea’s time later.
Among the line of people queued up to enter the city was a father and son duo. The father hunched his back, balancing a load of firewood on his shoulder, while the son looked about five or six years old, his face so filthy it was hard to make out his features. He reeked of stench and wore a straw hat, keeping his head bowed low.
