Chapter 1079 A Bitter Face

Chapter 1079: Chapter 1079 A Bitter Face

The crowd of onlookers grew larger and larger, and the cries of the Mo family grew louder and more dramatic.

There were many bystanders, and the entire street was nearly blocked.

No one seemed to notice that a luxurious carriage was slowly approaching from afar...

"Clop, clop, clop..."

A dark mass of people ahead blocked the path.

"Whoa...!"

The carriage was forced to come to a halt.

At that moment, a woman’s voice came from inside the carriage: "Why has the carriage stopped?"

The carriage driver immediately turned his head to reply, "Old Madam, something seems to be happening ahead. A large group of people is blocking the road."

"Then take a detour."

"But we’ve already come this far. If we detour now, it’ll be quite a long way before we can get back to the mansion," the carriage driver said with a troubled expression. Passing through this street, it would take only Half a Cup of Tea’s time to return to the mansion.

"Then hurry and go check what’s going on."

"Yes."

The carriage driver responded promptly, jumped off the carriage, and strode into the crowd. He squeezed his way through and looked ahead. Suddenly, his entire face changed.

He quickly turned back and trotted to the carriage: "Old Madam, it’s bad news."

A voice from inside responded impatiently, "Old Wang, you’re not young anymore, yet you have no composure. Why are you babbling and acting rashly in public? Our General’s Mansion is a reputable household; you should mind your image."

The carriage driver wore a bitter expression. The General’s Mansion’s name had already been dragged through the mud on the street. As a mere servant, what image was there to uphold?

"Old Madam, you’d best come down and take a look."

"What’s the matter?"

"Oh dear! There’s trouble. It’s not something I can explain in just a few words—you’ll need to see it yourself." The carriage driver looked anxious.

Inside the carriage, there was a moment of silence before a pair of plump, well-manicured hands lifted the carriage curtain.

A woman resembling an old maid climbed down.

This person was Old Madam’s personal maid, Old Lady Zhang. After disembarking, she helped Old Madam down from the carriage.

In the crowd, some sharp-eyed bystanders noticed Old Madam and immediately exclaimed, "Oh my! The Old Madam from the General’s Mansion is here. It seems the people of the General’s Mansion haven’t completely lost their humanity or their conscience."

The crowd turned their heads and, sure enough, saw Old Madam slowly walking over, supported by the old maid.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted as everyone surrounded her.

"Old Madam, are you here to bring Old Lady Mo and her family back with you?" Earlier, through the Mo family’s cries, the crowd had thoroughly learned their background—even their ancestors going back eighteen generations had been aired out by Old Lady Mo.

Old Madam, still unaware of what was happening, looked utterly baffled and asked, "I don’t understand. What are you all talking about?"

"Miss Situ’s adoptive mother’s relatives have fallen onto the streets. Isn’t Old Madam here to take them in?"

"What do you mean they’ve fallen onto the streets?" Old Madam turned to look at the carriage driver.

The driver, flustered, pointed to the dark mass of people ahead, "Relatives from Miss Situ’s adoptive family are right over there!"

"What are they doing here? Why have so many people gathered?"

The carriage driver hesitated, unable to answer directly. How could he dare criticize the General’s Mansion in front of Old Madam—even if it was Old Madam Mo who had said so, he wouldn’t dare mention it.

The onlookers, however, were not concerned with such reservations. They eagerly explained the earlier events, each chiming in with their own account.

Old Madam’s face instantly darkened. So these Plague Gods hadn’t left yet? They were still lingering in the Capital, deliberately tarnishing the General’s Mansion’s reputation.
