Chapter 1043: Chapter 1043: Fengyang Palace
"Go see your Empress Mother at Fengyang Palace. She was quite furious about the incident today."
"Yes."
"Off you go."
"This humble son takes his leave."
The Emperor waved his hand and closed his eyes wearily.
What’s going on here? I have yet to deal with the War Prince’s Mansion and now I hope there won’t be another incident with the Prime Minister’s Mansion.
In the past few days, the nearly sixty-year-old Prime Minister, grieving his lost son, had been rampaging through the Capital with his men, slashing and killing at the slightest disagreement. Many innocent civilians died in his wrath.
Helpless, given his high status and power, and as the Father-in-law of the Emperor, even the Emperor himself turned a blind eye, and everyone else was too frightened to speak out.
Faced with public outrage, the Emperor was caught in a dilemma. The Prime Minister’s only son, the child he had waited decades for, was tragically killed in the streets overnight.
No wonder the Prime Minister was enraged!
The innocent civilians involved were also unjust victims. They had done nothing wrong, only to have stepped out onto the streets and lost their lives.
The Emperor thought it over and blamed that damned dwarf, who had the audacity to commit murder within the Capital, and the Prime Minister’s only son at that. This was an open challenge to the Imperial court.
The more the Emperor thought about it, the angrier he became. Immediately, he sent people to find the dwarf, vowing to tear the wretch limb from limb.
Fengyang Palace
Everywhere there were yellow-tiled roofs, pavilions and towers, all arranged with utmost opulence. In the main hall stood an exquisitely life-like jade carved phoenix, stunning in its beauty.
The Fourth Prince had just arrived at Fengyang Palace when he encountered a servant dispatched by the Prime Minister to summon the Empress.
Clearly, the Prime Minister had heard the rumors and had specially sent someone to have the Empress attend and answer for the accusations.
Naturally, as the Empress’s own father, the Prime Minister would seek out his daughter to hold accountable for his grandson’s misdeeds.
The Fourth Prince had just stepped into Fengyang Palace when he brushed past the servant from the Prime Minister’s Mansion who had come to deliver the message.
"Empress Mother, who were those people?" The Fourth Prince asked, watching their retreating figures curiously.
Empress, sitting with a pained expression on the Noble Consort Chair, replied, "People sent by your maternal grandfather."
"What exactly does he want?"
"What can he want? Your Imperial Son here has caused the death of his son. Naturally, your Empress Mother must go and be scolded," the Empress said with frustration, massaging her temples.
"Empress Mother, I truly had no involvement in this affair. The death of my uncle has nothing to do with me," said the Fourth Prince, clearly distressed. Who was the scoundrel that spread such a rumour, framing him for the death of his maternal grandfather’s son? This move was too underhanded.
"Your Empress Mother wishes to believe you, but the rumors are detailed and persuasive. I can’t help but have doubts," the Empress expressed.
"To hear you say this, Empress Mother, deeply grieves me."
"Alas! It’s all fate. Don’t be too upset," sighed the Empress as she stood up.
"Where are you going, Empress Mother?"
"With the loss of my father’s son being such a grave matter, your Empress Mother should at least go and offer condolences," said the Empress.
Though the Empress’s words were gentle, the Fourth Prince knew well that she intended to suffer the blame for him.
"Empress Mother, there’s no need for you to face this torment. I am innocent and have nothing to fear. Why should we confess to something we haven’t done?"
"What a naive child! Do you still not understand the situation? Despite the Emperor’s reluctance to admit his age, we all know he is indeed getting older. The struggle for succession is imminent. While your maternal grandfather does not command the military, he has decades of influence and connections at court. If he’s willing to support you, our chances of success increase. Do you understand?"
