Chapter 1465: Chapter 1437: Solved a Medical Problem
The speech ended, and the line of people moved towards the hotel for the gathering. Kiara’s mother and Arlong were at two extremes.
Kiara’s mother was one whose spirit soared with joy, looking buoyant and clearly in a good mood, while Arlong was uncharacteristically silent and sullen. Kiara, seeing him like this, felt her brother’s problem must be quite serious. As the gathering came to an end, she was considering using the pretense of having tea at home to get her brother to talk, but to her surprise, Robert Johnson spoke first.
"Kiara, I’ve just got some fine tea. How about you and Edward Wheeler come over to our place?"
Robert was a man who spoke and acted with great precision; he never uttered a word in vain. Kiara knew at once that there was something up, exchanged a glance with Camden, and Mario Yuno nodded.
"Perfect, I’ve been craving tea lately."
"I’m going to the company," Arlong said listlessly.
Kiara felt that Robert had sought them out most likely to find a chance to talk about Arlong, as the kid was looking as wilted as a frostbitten eggplant.
What Kiara didn’t expect was that her mother’s problem was even more serious than her brother’s.
Kiara’s mother’s new home wasn’t too far from Kiara’s own. It was a short drive away, in the same community as Olivia Brown and Giorno, just in a different building. It was convenient for helping out with anything. It had been some days since Kiara last visited her mother. She had been busy competing abroad, and upon her return, she was swamped with endless tasks. As soon as she entered the house, Kiara sensed something was amiss and immediately noticed the pile of colorful boxes in the living room, all emblazoned with a health supplement brand. Edward Wheeler spotted them too.
"Mum, are you not feeling well?" Camden asked.
In his mind, these products were only for the sick.
"Not at all, eating these is for disease prevention—Kiara, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this. Take some with you when you go back. Edward Wheeler is working hard, and you still have to breastfeed. You both need to get some nourishment," Kiara’s mother said excitedly.
Kiara looked at Robert Johnson, who nodded helplessly, and she understood.
No wonder her stepfather had wanted her to come over; it seemed her mum had fallen into a trap.
"We’re not sick, why should we eat this?" Edward Wheeler said, bemused at the sight of the boxes.
His mother-in-law was incredibly fit, able to ascend several flights of stairs effortlessly, and whenever there was a promotion at the supermarket, she was sure to be up early queuing to snatch up deals, fighting over items with other middle-aged and elderly women with impressive agility. So why would she need these?
"Well, there was a health check-up a few days ago, and I just went to get checked. And wouldn’t you know it, my blood pressure was high. There happened to be a lecture there, so I listened in, and afterwards, they gave out a basin. The kids there were enthusiastic, calling me every day to come and collect stuff, and I felt bad not buying anything. But this stuff is great; it’s really good for your health," Kiara’s mother explained.
Kiara’s mother turned to her with a beaming face and asked, "Kiara, have you noticed that my health has been a lot better recently?"
"Better? You had high blood pressure a few days ago, and they told you to take medication to lower it, but you wouldn’t listen," Robert Johnson couldn’t bear to hear more and interjected.
If he could have persuaded his spouse, he certainly wouldn’t have called for his children to come back.
"That’s nothing. The children told me it’s detoxifying my body first and then I’ll get better soon. Western medicine harms the body and can’t be taken all the time. Aren’t I also thinking of saving the children some burden?"
Kiara understood.
"How many children do you have? You keep mentioning ’child’ as if I didn’t know that besides me, Arlong, and Giorno, you had other children! Which ’child’ told you such nonsense? Call them out for me!"
Actually, Kiara’s mother used the word ’child’ in two different senses in one sentence. The first refers to the salespeople of health products, while the latter refers to the family members at home. Kiara couldn’t help but mock her mother’s gullibility, which caused her mother’s pretense of laughter to falter.
"Why do you speak like that, child? They’re just looking out for my well-being."
"Looking out for your well-being or their wallets? I know these people better than anyone—they’ll butter up softhearted old men and women like you, calling you mom and dad, and they’d kneel to make a sale. If you’re sick, you should see a doctor. Take your blood pressure medication if you need it; don’t fuss with these useless things." Kiara was struggling to contain her temper.
A few days away and Mum had already been swayed by someone’s smooth talk, apparently quite successfully at that.
"Daughter-in-law, don’t get mad at Mum, okay? We’re not short of money; if we need to spend it, we’ll spend it," Mario Yuno quickly interjected with irony when he saw his wife about to lose her temper. His wife, capable of winning international awards, was inexplicably muddled around people close to her, abandoning her expertise for an emotional response. At that moment, he chose to go with the flow before making his case, as opposing the Old Lady head-on would only strengthen her defensiveness.
"Edward Wheeler knows how to speak well," Kiara’s mother enjoyed listening to her son-in-law.
Camden then added, "Just for that box, it must cost quite a bit, right?"
"It’s not expensive, just 888 for a box with 10 boxes inside, enough for two months. They said that after a few months my high blood pressure will be completely cured and won’t bother me again."
"Emma, that’s amazing, it’s like they’ve solved a medical mystery," Edward Wheeler said, his words heavy with sarcasm. Kiara and Robert Johnson understood the implication, but Kiara’s mother was clueless and thought her son-in-law was being sincere.
Kiara became incensed, "You just snag the slightest advantage for yourself. The money you’ve spent on this crap could buy how many basins? You could open an illegal workshop to produce basins with that money!"
Most cardiac diseases can only be managed; doctors rarely promise a cure. How could they make such miraculous claims?
"Are you trying to anger me to death, you ungrateful girl? Am I spending your money? This is my own money I’m spending!" Kiara’s mother countered indignantly, upset by her daughter’s confrontation in front of her son-in-law and spouse.
"Alright, let’s all calm down and talk this through," Robert Johnson tried to mediate, but Kiara’s mother turned on him, pointing at his nose, "And you! Stop pretending to be the good guy! Are you worried about the money? Tell the children, am I always the one being bullied? My life is so hard..."
Robert Johnson had brought Kiara back to address this very issue, but now he was the one in trouble. He hurriedly tried to appease his spouse, who wouldn’t listen to reason, acting as if she couldn’t live without making the purchase. Just then, a call came to the house. Upon answering, Kiara’s mother’s tears stopped immediately.
"Olivia Brown, a lecture? I’m not really up for it, my child has just returned... What? Offering a space blanket?" Kiara’s mother glanced at Kiara’s stern face and her begrudging spouse, thinking that staying at home was no fun compared to going to get the blanket.
Kiara wanted to go after her the moment she heard it, but Mario Yuno pulled her back, whispering urgently, "Wife, acting on impulse is the devil’s work!"
"I’m going out to get that blanket, and when I return, we’ll settle this!" Kiara’s mother declared, grabbing her handbag and storming out. Kiara held back, ultimately staying put.
Robert Johnson only sighed in resignation after Kiara’s mother had left.
"I’m truly at my wit’s end."
Giorno had offered him advice; Kiara’s mother was so addicted to these schemes, perhaps it was time for a professional intervention. However, since they were a blended family, it would be inappropriate for Giorno and Robert Johnson to speak out—making a fuss might only escalate the situation.
"How much money has she spent?" Kiara asked with an icy expression.
"Not much, just a few thousand. I’m not fretting over the money as such. If it was truly beneficial and harmless to her health, it wouldn’t be so concerning. But since your mother started with this product, she stopped taking the blood pressure medicine from the Hospital. I can’t find any information on this company, and she won’t listen to reason. That’s why I had you come back... Kiara, do you have any solution?"
