If Fire truly wants to have a child with Jojo, you should treat her better, take her as a real daughter-in-law. These two kids have had a tough journey together, and whether outsiders can understand this special family is beyond our control. As a parent, if you can bless them, it would make for the most beautiful memories for the rest of their lives.”
Kiara’s tone shifted suddenly, becoming stern and sorrowful.
“Henry, how many years do you have left? Don’t you want to leave some beautiful memories for future generations? Don’t you wish that when Jojo and his child think of you in the future, they’ll be filled with fond memories? Death is like a snuffed-out candle; whether there’s another world after we die is unknown. The so-called legacy isn’t just about passing down genes; it’s more about the memories our ancestors left us. How do you hope Jojo will speak of you to his child decades from now?”
These words truly struck a chord.
Jojo’s father thought about the emotional turmoil of the past few days, all the joy he owed his child, and, with Kiara’s words stirring a surge of emotions, his heart was filled with mixed feelings. In the end, he could only nod.
“Yes, we should leave some memories for future generations…”
Kiara, having achieved her goal, stood up satisfied. “Jenny Bailey asked me to tell you that she has agreed to have the child. You need to live well. With some luck, if you hold out for a year, you might see your grandson. If you manage to outlive expectation, you might see your grandson go to elementary school, and if you hold on even longer, you might see him get married and have children of his own.”
Jojo’s father was astonished. “How could she agree to that?!”
He had just mentioned this to Dr. Clark, how could she have agreed so quickly?
“I had already spoken to Jenny Bailey before Jojo got off the plane. The young lady made up her mind right there and then. They decided to conceive immediately. If successful, she’ll return to take care of the pregnancy. Old man, you’re really lucky, meeting such a considerate and kind-hearted girl.”
“But, but they haven’t even settled their relationship yet. How could she…” After Kiara put it that way, Jojo’s father also felt it was a bit abrupt to talk about children without discussing their feelings first.
“That’s why I said you’re lucky. She’s taken a liking to Jojo as a person, and besides–” Kiara gave Jojo’s father a warm smile, “we all hope you can live longer, so you have to try hard.”
Jenny Bailey said life is so full of uncertainties, she isn’t sure how far she can go with Jojo in the future.
But now, she is willing to bear a child for Jojo that belongs to them both. If one day they cannot grow old together, she will treat the child as her own and raise it with Jojo. Who has that many foreknowns in life? At this moment, she is following her heart, and they’ll see where the future takes them. It’s also fulfilling her own wish to be a mother. She personally dislikes the touch of men but truly loves kids, so this is an opportunity for both personal and mutual benefit.
Having resolved Jojo’s issue, Kiara began to fulfill her promise to Edward Wheeler. Apart from the regular treatments for Grace Little Phoenix Bradford’s father, she no longer took any other cases.
With Jenny Bailey’s promise, Jojo’s father felt invigorated and had a better outlook. Even without Kiara’s presence, the sheer hope of Jojo’s return kept him going. Having something to look forward to can often sustain a person for a long time. In contrast, Old Master Mu Wilson, who also required Kiara’s end-of-life care, wasn’t as fortunate as Jojo’s father.
Grace Bradford was now arrested, and Kiara lied to Old Master Mu Wilson, telling him she had gone on a business trip out of town. Surprisingly, Old Master Mu was indifferent to it, unaware whether he had grown accustomed to his daughter’s busy travels, or if the father-daughter relationship was merely a one-way street–with only Grace Bradford concerned about her father, and no affection returned by him to his daughter.
Old Master Mu was terrified of dying, despite having a doctor by his side and top-tier psychologists like Kiara available for treatment at any time. He still sought medical advice from all quarters, trying every possible remedy. Yet, his body reached its limit and on the 30th day after Grace’s arrest, Old Master Mu was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Grace’s assets were frozen, but she had earlier left enough money in Old Father Jackson’s name to cover these expenses. Kiara handled all the hospital admission processes. The elder’s body was now like a lamp running out of oil, as he received three critical condition notices in a week and was resuscitated several times.
Kiara was always the one running around. The doctors subtly suggested to Kiara a few times whether she would consider ceasing treatment. Each time, Kiara thought of Grace’s trust in her and continued to invest heavily in treatment, even though she knew Old Father Jackson certainly wouldn’t make it. As his daughter, however, Grace would surely have wished for him to live a little longer.
In the midst of this, a little incident occurred: the attorney handling Grace’s affairs seemed to have different ideas. He subtly hinted to Kiara that, seeing how Old Father Jackson was already in such a state, there was no point in wasting money. He suggested that if Kiara and the attorney were to conspire together, they could tamper with the old man’s funds without anyone knowing.
The attorney realized Grace wouldn’t be coming back and began to covet the money.
Knowing that Kiara was an exorbitantly priced psychologist, he wanted to take this opportunity for the two of them to make a fortune. However, Kiara simply said no calmly, and the very next day, the attorney was informed that he was unilaterally fired.
Kiara fulfilled her promise to Grace, determined to spare no effort in keeping Old Father Jackson alive until the end.
Whenever there was an issue at the hospital, they sought her out, making her practically the person entrusted with Grace’s legacy.
Mario Yuno, though he worried for his daughter-in-law, fearing she might overexert herself, dared not say anything to Kiara. He knew his daughter-in-law was serious about her promises, committed to fulfilling her word to others.
However, during this time, the flu was rampant. With Mrs. Kiara frequently visiting the hospital, it was inevitable that she caught a minor fever-inducing ailment. As a pregnant woman, she dared not take Western medicine, and even when prescribed a traditional medicine which was supposedly harmless to the fetus, she dared not take it, resorting instead to drinking lots of warm water and enduring it, waking up at night coughing continuously.
Seeing this, Mario Yuno could no longer bear it. He decisively found someone to replace Kiara at the hospital, no longer allowing her to make an appearance. He feared she might contract another cold or some other sickness, especially since it was also the time of the Lunar New Year. He took this opportunity to invite his mother-in-law over, officially to celebrate the festival together, but really to have Kiara’s mother keep an eye on her.
When Kiara’s mother arrived, she came up with a variety of traditional remedies to treat Kiara’s cold–from cabbage and scallion root soup to tangerine peel and ginger slice tea–a variety of warm porridges were tried, not caring whether they worked or not, simply urging Kiara to give them a go.
These, Kiara could tolerate; after all, you’re supposed to drink plenty of warm fluids for a cold, and as these soups and teas were made from food ingredients, they weren’t harmful to her health–they couldn’t cure but also couldn’t worsen her condition.
However, what Kiara found truly intolerable, and which was much more serious than this issue,
was the myriad of superstitious items her mother brought to ensure fetal protection. Adhering to the ignorant belief that it’s better to be safe than sorry, she lavished all sorts of these on Kiara, and this was something Kiara just couldn’t endure.
