Rebirth Of The Noble Mage Behind The Scenes -
Chapter 160: The Strange Island
Chapter 160: Chapter 160: The Strange Island
Swish swish—
The azure waves continuously slapped against the hull, then futilely shattered into pristine white foam.
The long-missed refreshing sea breeze blew from the front of the ship, scattering the dense fog enveloping it.
A strong wind lifted Anvis’s Traveler’s Cloak, making its brown hem flutter wildly in mid-air.
After a journey of about half a month, this bizarre black trimaran finally reached its destination.
Although he was accompanied by Claire, this journey seemed to be calm and tranquil.
The only change was the captain of this Black Ship.
Previously, the face of the old sailor, covered in greasy wrinkles, always bore a strange sly smile.
But as the journey continued, his smile gradually disappeared.
In fact, Anvis didn’t even know how far they had traveled.
After entering deep into the Mist Sea, a strange foggy weather enveloped the ship.
Gloomy blue depths harbored surging undercurrents, the magnetic field underwent strange and chaotic deviations, and the sky was a dull gray, heavily obscured by thick fog.
This was exactly why the Mist Sea was a feared place among sailors and crewmen. Once an ordinary ship strayed deep into the deadly fog of the Mist Sea, it was nearly equivalent to a death sentence.
No skills for discerning directions could function, and recklessly wandering about would only be swept by bizarre currents into deeper waters.
Moreover, this kind of fog could block the connection of ordinary communication magic and Magic Items.
Apart from some special Mysterious Objects that could guide directions, nothing could save them.
During these days, Anvis could only judge the time through the brightness of the fog and his own Magic Pocket Watch.
Today, this lengthy voyage was finally about to come to an end.
Taking a deep breath of the cool salty sea breeze, Anvis stood at the front of the deck, alongside others, gazing at the island, observing their final destination for this trip.
Behind the dispersing fog, a land nearly as vast as a Continent progressively enlarged and approached, completely filling the view before their eyes.
As Evan said, the area of this Nameless Island was far greater than ordinary islands.
Anvis could see the island’s pale white beaches and a few lone coconut trees, as well as the seemingly sizable port town.
Behind the town lay a desolate wilderness, with some islanders slowly moving under the fog-covered gloomy sky, herding the livestock they raised.
Further away, lush jungles merged into a green sea, resembling insurmountable distant mountains rising and falling. A solitary massive castle loomed partially hidden alongside the mountains.
Gradually, the huge Black Ship steered into the island’s port. There were several docks made of wooden planks and gray granite, showing clear signs of weathering.
Currently, all the docks were empty; no ships that should have been there were in sight.
The Black Ship docked at one of the piers, and once the ship was steady, Anvis took Jom and others off the ship.
Oddly enough, after all the outsiders disembarked, the Black Ship did not resupply any provisions on the island but immediately set sail again, leaving the port without a moment’s pause, heading unknowingly towards which direction.
Watching the departing Black Ship, Anvis slowly walked down the wooden dock.
At the entrance of each dock was a dedicated shipping warehouse, but, like the dock, it seemed old and worn out.
Two sailors, wrapped in sailor’s headscarves and puffing on a strange type of smoking pipe, sat on a large pile of barrels and packages at the warehouse entrance.
With a gaze mixed with wariness and curiosity, typical of residents from remote areas, they sized up these travelers who had come from afar.
At that moment, out of the corner of his eye, Anvis noticed from afar that the slender, brown-haired young man Claire was impersonating was suddenly stopped by a scruffy tramp leaning against the corner of the warehouse at the dock entrance.
In his peripheral vision, Claire seemed to speak a few words to the tramp, then the girl left on her own while the tramp continued to lean in the corner.
After a moment of thought, once Claire had walked away, Anvis, accompanied by Jom, also approached.
As they approached the tramp, a sour and stale stench hit them like a wall, causing Anvis to stop in his tracks.
Noticing the footsteps beside him, the tramp cautiously lifted his head, peering through his matted curly brown hair and beard at the two figures draped in Traveler’s Cloaks approaching him.
"Hello, I am Hill."
After applying an invisible protective field around his face, Anvis greeted him with a smile.
"May I ask you a few questions?"
"Sorry, it’s not convenient."
The tramp’s eyes flickered slightly, murmuring softly and hurrying to rise to leave.
"Don’t be so quick to refuse, why not think it over again?"
Anvis smiled, his hands concealed under his cloak forming a spell gesture, a faint ripple of Magic Light spreading.
[Charming Humans]
An invisible Magic Light flashed momentarily over the body of the tramp.
The recently risen tramp paused, suddenly finding the face before him handsome and welcoming. The words of impatient refusal he had initially intended to utter now seemed difficult to articulate.
His lips moved slightly, swiftly scanning his surroundings once, then he spoke in a low, somewhat unclear and husky voice,
"Strangers, you should not have come here—"
Upon hearing this somewhat disjointed statement, Anvis was slightly taken aback.
"Why do you say that?"
Looking quizzically into the tramp’s murky brown eyes, he countered.
"You should not have come to this land, this land cursed by the Divine—"
The tramp did not elaborate, but as he gazed into Anvis’s eyes, a vague sense of Fear suddenly appeared in his look.
The pace of his words suddenly sped up, becoming incredibly fast and blurred, like a fish desperately gasping for air after being out of water—
"This land... this land, Lavales! It doesn’t welcome foreigners!"
"But what’s the use of saying this now?"
"Heh heh, heh heh heh..."
Toward the end, the tramp suddenly let out a strange laugh, then went back to sit in the corner he had been leaning against.
No matter how Anvis inquired, he no longer responded, only looking at Anvis with a slightly confused gaze, maintaining a bizarre silence.
"Don’t mind this guy’s words, his mind has been eroded by the Curse Power of the wilderness."
The voice suddenly sounded from behind, Anvis turned and saw a strapping sailor holding a peculiar pipe and wearing a red sailor’s cap.
That was one of the two sailors who had just been sitting at the warehouse entrance.
Now, he had left his companion and approached Anvis with a characteristic cheerful sailor’s smile, extending his right hand.
