Chapter 70*
Chapter 70: 70*
Lixue’s grip on the phone tightened as she paced the room, trying to steady her breath. "The nurse said two men showed up with forged documents claiming to be from the Yu family. They took her. I... I don’t know where she is."
There was a brief pause before Mo Ran spoke again, his tone dangerously calm. "I’ll handle this. Don’t worry, Lixue. We’ll find her."
"Mo Ran..." Her voice wavered as she leaned against the wall, struggling to keep her emotions in check. "I think it’s Yu Jia and Qin Sayou. No one else would stoop this low, especially using the Yu family name to do something so vile."
"Then we’ll start there," he said firmly. "But first, you need to stay safe. You’re at the mansion, right?"
"Yes," she whispered.
"I’ll be there soon."
The call ended, leaving Lixue staring at her phone. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions—the fear for her mother, fury at her half sister and stepmother, and an overwhelming sense of helplessness.
But she wouldn’t let herself crumble. Not now.
As promised, Mo Ran arrived within the hour, his expression as sharp and controlled as ever. He didn’t waste time with pleasantries. Instead, he reached for her hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. "We’ll find her," he said again, his voice steady.
Lixue nodded, drawing strength from his presence. "I called the Yu family before you got here," she confessed. "I needed to see if my father knew anything about this."
"What did they say?"
She clenched her fists. "They denied everything. My father sounded... surprised, but he’s hard to read. Qin Sayou was the one who answered first. She sounded annoyed, but she wasn’t surprised."
Mo Ran’s eyes darkened. "It’s not surprising they’d deny involvement. If they’re behind this, they’ll cover their tracks."
"I don’t have proof," Lixue admitted, her frustration evident. "But I know it was them. They hate me, and they’ve never cared about my mother."
Mo Ran nodded. "Then we focus on uncovering the truth. I’ll have my team investigate the Yu family’s recent movements. If Yu Jia or Qin Sayou were involved, we’ll find out."
One of his men approached cautiously, handing Mo Ran a tablet. "Sir, we’ve already started tracing possible locations," the man said. "There are surveillance cameras near Madam Leili’s care facility. We should have footage within the hour."
"Good," Mo Ran said, dismissing him with a curt nod. He turned back to Lixue. "I know this is difficult, but I need you to trust me. Let my people handle this."
Lixue took a shaky breath. "I trust you," she said quietly.
As Mo Ran coordinated with his men, Lixue sank into a chair, her mind racing. The thought of her mother in the hands of those who meant her harm was unbearable. Her mother had always been her greatest source of comfort and love.
Now, she felt powerless to protect the one person who had always protected her.
But she wouldn’t stay powerless for long.
Her gaze hardened as she watched Mo Ran work. If the Yu family thought they could intimidate her and break her spirit, they had miscalculated. She would do whatever it took to bring her mother home—and she wouldn’t let anyone stand in her way.
As the minutes ticked by, a servant returned with an update. "Sir, we’ve identified the vehicle used to take Madam Leili. It was rented under an alias, but we’ve traced it to a warehouse on the outskirts of the city."
Mo Ran stood, his jaw tightening. "Prepare the car," he ordered.
Lixue rose to her feet. "I’m coming with you."
"No," Mo Ran said immediately. "It’s too dangerous."
"She’s my mother, Mo Ran," Lixue said firmly. "I won’t stay behind while you’re out there trying to save her. I can’t."
He studied her for a moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he sighed. "Stay close to me, and don’t do anything reckless."
The drive to the outskirts of the city was tense and silent, the air thick with unspoken fears and worries.
Lixue sat beside Mo Ran, her hands tightly clasped in her lap to keep them from trembling. Every second felt like an eternity, her mind racing with worst possibleC worst-case scenarios about what might have happened to her mother.
Mo Ran’s focus had never wavered, his sharp gaze fixed ahead as he navigated the darkened streets. His calm, commanding presence was the only thing keeping Lixue grounded.
When they arrived, the warehouse loomed ominously against the night sky. The building was surrounded by overgrown weeds and broken fences, its rusted exterior was a testament to years of neglect. Mo Ran’s men, dressed in dark tactical gear, were already stationed around the perimeter, waiting for his signal.
Mo Ran turned to Lixue, his expression serious. "Stay here in the car," he said firmly. "This could get dangerous."
Lixue opened her mouth to protest but stopped when she saw the unyielding resolve in his eyes. She nodded reluctantly. "Just... bring her back," she whispered.
"I will," he promised before stepping out of the car, the door closing with a soft thud.
From her seat, Lixue watched as Mo Ran joined his team, giving out quiet instructions. They moved with precision, splitting into groups to surround the warehouse. She strained to catch glimpses of what was happening, her heart pounding with anticipation and dread.
Minutes passed like hours until a muffled commotion erupted from inside. The sound of raised voices and scuffling reached her ears, followed by a sudden crash. Lixue’s breath hitched as she leaned forward, her knuckles white as she gripped the edge of her seat.
Finally, the warehouse doors burst open, and Mo Ran emerged, his arm around a frail figure wrapped in a shawl. Lixue’s eyes widened, tears springing to her eyes as she recognized her mother.
She threw the car door open and ran toward them, her heels sinking into the soft ground as she hurried across the overgrown lot. "Mother!"
Mo Ran stepped aside as Lixue reached them, falling to her knees to wrap her arms around her mother. "Mum, it’s me. You’re safe now."
Nangong Leili, looked up at her with wide, glassy eyes, confusion and fear clouding her face. "Lixue..." she murmured before going unconscious.
"Let’s get her to the hospital.."
Mo Ran lifted Nangong Leili as Lixue walked behind him, still in shock. Her mother had actually said her name.
Mo Ran’s face was set in a grim mask as he drove, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. Lixue sat quietly beside him, her mother asleep in the back seat, bundled under a warm blanket.
The earlier tension hadn’t dissipated, and the air in the car felt heavy with unspoken questions.
"How... how did you find her so quickly?" Lixue finally broke the silence, her voice tight with emotion.
Mo Ran glanced at her briefly, his jaw tightening. "A lead came up," he said shortly.
"That’s not an answer," Lixue pressed, her tone sharper now. "You walked out the door, and hours later, my mother is safe. I need to know what happened, Mo Ran."
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "The nurse said men claiming to be from the Yu family took her right?. I followed that trail. It led to a warehouse on the outskirts of town."
Lixue frowned. "Yes I’m aware of that, what I want to know is the people who took my mother. Who they were? What they wanted?"
Mo Ran hesitated, the memory of Liang Cheng’s smirk flashing in his mind. He had no intention of sharing the full details. "They were hired to take her," he admitted. "But I convinced them to let her go."
"Convinced?" Lixue’s brows knit together, her frustration mounting. "Mo Ran, this isn’t the time for cryptic answers. Who are these people?"
Mo Ran’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. "They didn’t tell me much," he said carefully, sidestepping her question. "Just that they were doing a job for someone. My guess is either Yu Jia or Qin Sayou."
Lixue’s stomach churned at the thought of her stepmother and half sister stooping so low. But before she could respond, Mo Ran’s voice dropped to a more hesitant tone.
"There was... a man," he said slowly, as if testing the weight of the words. "The one leading them. Liang Cheng."
"Liang Cheng?" Lixue repeated, the name felt unfamiliar on her tongue. "Who is that?"
"I don’t know," Mo Ran admitted, his gaze fixed on the road ahead. "But he’s not just some hired thug. He had power. Even his men were afraid of him."
A shiver ran down Lixue’s spine. "Did he say anything to you?"
Mo Ran hesitated, his mind replaying Liang Cheng’s parting words.
"Tell your wife I said hello."
It had unnerved him, but he had no idea what the man meant by it—or if it even meant anything at all.
"Nothing important," he lied, unwilling to alarm her any further or irked himself even more.
