Chapter 495: Chapter 495 Interception halfway

Upon hearing this, the County Magistrate’s eyebrows shot up in indignation: "What nonsense are you spouting? You think just because the Fox Brothers have left, you should too? I’ll always keep this house for the Fox Brothers, and all you need to do is guard it for them. Just live here peacefully and don’t overthink things."

The County Magistrate had his own reasons for saying this.

He had realized that Old Uncle Qiu and his family shared a life-and-death bond with the Fox and company. As long as he could hold onto Old Uncle Qiu’s family, wouldn’t there be opportunities to meet the Fox and the Little Bear in the future?

So, one shouldn’t let a small, immediate profit blind them. After all, "no pain, no gain"; strictly speaking, he was the one coming out ahead.

In these chaotic times, reliable bosses are hard to find; he’d better hold onto the Fox’s "legs" tightly.

...

Compared to the County Magistrate’s well-thought-out calculations, Li Wenli and his party, whom the County Magistrate considered his backbone, had already left Dai County and were heading towards An County.

The merchant convoy consisted of three horse carriages. Dongsheng Tavern’s Ah Fu and Ah Gui, along with five robust men, made up a seven-person team. Two other carriages carried Ah Dao, Xiao Chan, Rabbit, and Smiling Face.

The last carriage was driven by the Old Monk and contained Sister Junjun with her two brothers, as well as the Fox himself.

In total, the Fox and his party numbered nine people, and together with Ah Fu and Ah Gui’s team, there were sixteen of them.

To make the convoy look more legitimate, they loaded the carriages with many goods—mostly specialty items from Dai County—intending to sell them in the Old Imperial Capital.

Ah Fu and Ah Gui were tasked with protecting these goods from falling into the hands of bandits.

However, the journey from Dai County to An County was seven days and nights of non-stop travel. Ever since the Third Prince had sheltered refugees, many bandits had infiltrated their ranks, making the trade routes increasingly dangerous.

According to Ah Fu and Ah Gui, they normally wouldn’t need so many people when they went out to purchase goods, but with the rise in bandit activity, they had to be more cautious.

After a few days of rushing along, they spotted fires in the underbrush, but the people near them seemed wary of the convoy’s insignia and did not approach.

Thus, the group safely reached the boundaries of An County.

As they were about to cross into the county, suddenly, people ran out from the jungle, blocking their path.

Ah Fu and Ah Gui frowned. "How dare you! When Dongsheng Tavern goes out on business, who gives you the right to be so bold here?"

The people blocking them merely glanced sheepishly behind Fu Gui and saw a familiar figure perched on the roof of one of the carriages.

Covered in a cloak, with arms folded across the chest, the figure also held a dark, lackluster Mystic Iron Sword in hand.

This look was recognizable to them.

Hence, the person started speaking hesitantly, "Please don’t misunderstand, sirs. We mean no offense by stopping you—we just wanted to ask if the Seven-Person Team is following your convoy?"

"?" Li Wenli, hearing the commotion from inside the carriage, slightly parted the vehicle’s curtains to look outside.

Blocking their way were several men in tattered clothes. But judging by their wretched appearance, they resembled refugees more than bandits.

"What business do any of you have with someone in our convoy?" Ah Fu looked up at him questioningly.

"Ah Dao, go take a look," Li Wenli instructed Ah Dao, who was atop the carriage.

The fellow just enjoyed basking in the sunlight on top of the carriage; he couldn’t help but feel helpless about it.

Reluctantly fulfilling his master’s command, Ah Dao moved forward, and Xiao Chan from the other carriage had no choice but to follow Ah Dao’s lead.

It couldn’t be helped; Brother Dao might be great in a fight but he was no talker. Diplomatic tasks had to be left to him.

When the newcomers saw that the ones approaching were indeed Ah Dao and Xiao Chan, smiles blossomed on their faces.
