Chapter 173: Pounding Rice
Chapter 173: Chapter 173: Pounding Rice
The two children following behind suddenly heard a flapping sound and all shrank back in fear, "What... what happened?"
"It’s nothing, a few birds were hiding in our room and flew away when they saw us coming." Bai Junjun replied calmly.
The children let out a sigh of relief and did their best to calm their almost leaping hearts.
When they returned to the room, it was still without light.
Bai Junjun, with her excellent night vision, clearly saw the children’s anxiousness in the dark.
This darkness was partly due to the pitch-black room and partly because the fleeing birds had startled them.
She comforted them, "Don’t worry, our room is very safe, no poisonous snakes or fierce beasts can get in. And even if they did, with me here, they’d just end up being eaten by us."
Bai Junjun’s words acted like a strong tonic, greatly calming the two nervous children.
They obediently felt their way back to bed, trying hard to fall asleep quickly.
However, after wandering around the mysterious valley all day, the children were also tired; lying on the soft, cloud-like beds, they quickly fell into slumberland.
Before sleeping, Bai Junjun first drew the moisture out of the bag of paddy, squeezing out a water droplet the size of a small thumb which she swallowed in one gulp, and then she officially drank the Magical Wood Water she had commandeered from Small Cedarwood.
After guzzling down a large bottle, Bai Junjun finally lay down to sleep with peace of mind.
This Magical Wood Water, comparable to an elixir, was the only thing that could quickly store energy in such times of urgent need.
The next morning, Bai Junjun was awoken by a burst of bird chirping.
Looking outside, indeed, her Wall of Vine had caught another batch of passing birds, and there were even some repeats from the ones yesterday; she didn’t know if it was a different group or the same one that hadn’t learned their lesson.
Bai Sasa and Xiao Shan also found this scene quite strange.
"Why do these birds keep coming here? Do they want to live in our house too?"
Xiao Shan glanced at the soft beds inside the room and quickly shook his head. This was where they slept; he wouldn’t allow birds to take over and anger him by covering everything with bird droppings.
If only he had a slingshot, he would definitely make them so scared they would never come back.
Xiao Shan thought fiercely, yet the thought seemed strange as soon as it appeared.
He... could he use a slingshot?
Regrettably, what followed was just a blur of memory.
By that time, Bai Junjun and Bai Sasa had already gone downstairs, and Xiao Shan quickly followed them outside.
The three of them first went to the riverside to freshen up, but this time Bai Junjun didn’t catch fish and instead let Bai Sasa try threshing the paddy.
There were many ways to thresh paddy; in a farmer’s house, there was a special foot-operated thresher, but with only four jin of rice, there was no need to use such a large device.
Bai Junjun simply put the four jin of paddy in a wooden tub and then found a small wooden pestle for Bai Sasa.
So, Bai Sasa pounded the paddy non-stop, like pounding medicine.
However, while threshing, Bai Sasa also had to be very careful with the force used, or else one pound would turn the rice into powder.
To everyone’s surprise, the paddy was indeed able to be threshed after just one night of being covered!
Bai Sasa was so happy she nearly danced for joy.
When the threshing was finished and the rice was gently sifted, the husks fell away, leaving only the milky yellow rice remaining in the tub.
Bai Sasa looked at the rice with tears brimming in her eyes.
For breakfast, Bai Junjun generously cooked two liang of rice. Though it might seem little, the amount cooked for three people was much thicker than the meager porridge distributed by the Ninth Guard.
