Chapter 933: Chapter 933 Like a Nanny
Zhou Lanfang had been back for a few days now, and she didn’t lift a finger to help with anything. She ate a lot every meal too. She had long wanted to drive Zhou Lanfang away and now that she had the chance, she couldn’t wait to get her out the door.
Meanwhile, Zhou Siyu at the Gu Family’s was also having a tough time. She had thought that Gu Jianbin was going to stay in the city for the New Year. To her surprise, after selling the previous house, Gu Jianbin didn’t buy another one in the city. Instead, he let his parents start a business there, hoping that money would beget money. However, it wasn’t long before Wang Erfeng nearly lost it all.
Since there wasn’t enough left to buy a house, Gu Jianbin, afraid that Wang Erfeng would mess things up again, took all the money back to keep for tuition and living expenses.
With no house in the city, they had no choice but to celebrate the New Year in the countryside. Although the Gu Family’s house was a comfortable three-tiled room dwelling, Siyu and Gu Jianbin were not married yet, so she slept with Wang Erfeng at night while Gu Jianbin shared a room with his father.
Wang Erfeng wasn’t keen on cleanliness; she wouldn’t wash her feet or face before bed, and the stench of her stinky feet almost made Siyu puke. It was even worse than staying at Shen Jianhua’s.
What she found even more unacceptable was that Wang Erfeng didn’t treat her as a guest at all. After meals, whether it was washing dishes or doing laundry, she was expected to do it all, which really troubled her.
The first day she arrived, she had wanted to make a good impression, so she had volunteered to work. This turned into a habit for Wang Erfeng, who now took it for granted that Siyu should do these things.
If it weren’t for her uncle who was now suffering from cancer and could no longer help her, becoming a burden instead, she would never want to stay here and suffer like this.
As she thought about all these vexing issues, Siyu lost her appetite and only ate half a bowl of rice before putting down her chopsticks.
"Siyu, after you finish eating, wash the dishes and do the laundry as well," Wang Erfeng said as usual after finishing her meal, leaving her dishes behind as she began to order Siyu around.
Siyu subconsciously glanced at Gu Jianbin, and seeing that he had no reaction, as if he also thought it was only natural for her to do these chores, she slowly grew unhappy.
Yet she didn’t refuse. Instead, she nodded obediently and started gathering the bowls and chopsticks. Then, as if on purpose, she asked, "Auntie, do we have any ointment or something at home? My hands are cracked."
As expected, her words immediately drew Gu Jianbin’s attention. He looked at her hands and indeed saw some cracks, which naturally made him feel sorry for her.
"Mom, don’t let her wash the dishes. Her hands are not used to this kind of work and get dry and cracked easily with water," Gu Jianbin said.
Upon hearing this, Wang Erfeng immediately became unhappy. "So if she does this, her hands crack, but if I do it, I’m fine, right? What’s wrong with young people doing a bit of work? Your father and I worked hard to raise you, we worked hard to put you through school, and now you think you’re too good to enjoy the fruits of our labor?"
In Wang Erfeng’s view, it was Siyu who was marrying up by being with Gu Jianbin; doing chores was the least she could do. They didn’t care for a daughter-in-law who acted like she was born with a silver spoon, didn’t do a thing, and couldn’t even handle chores.
It was only because Siyu was also a university graduate—and even then, despite her hard work—Wang Erfeng still wouldn’t really accept her.
"What’s the big deal about washing dishes that you have to bring all that up?" Gu Jianbin knew his parents had it tough, but hearing Wang Erfeng speak like that softened his tone immediately.
Zhou Siyu knew that Gu Jianbin was a dutiful son. At this point in the conversation, if she didn’t volunteer to do the dishes, it would put Gu Jianbin in a difficult position. So, she took the initiative to say, "Jianbin, it’s just a small crack on my hand, it’s nothing serious. I know you worry about me, but it’s only right to help out with household chores when we visit so infrequently."
"You’ve worked hard," Jianbin said, relieved to see how understanding she was. He felt he had chosen the right partner.
