Chapter 76: 76 confirmed

Jiang Xinyu walked a few steps, but no matter how she thought about it, it didn’t seem right. She turned around and looked at Wei Kaiyun.

"Director Wei, this isn’t right. A single man and a single woman, it’s not appropriate."

"I’m unmarried."

"Whether unmarried or married, it doesn’t work."

"Why not?" Wei Kaiyun teased her.

"It just doesn’t work, why ask why?"

"I say it works, so it works." Wei Kaiyun originally wanted to mention getting married, but afraid of scaring her, he changed his tone.

"This is my house, I make the decisions." Jiang Xinyu got a little annoyed.

"Jiang Xinyu, I’m under a lot of pressure, and I really can’t rest in the dormitory. Can’t you take pity on me?" Wei Kaiyun decided to change tactics.

"But this really feels strange."

"What’s so strange? Just treat me like a friend."

"But you’re a guy."

"Then why don’t I become a girl?"

Jiang Xinyu burst out laughing, "With your big manly look, you’d look like a female ogre if you turned into a girl. Just like the me in my past life."

"Alright, don’t think too much. Your thoughts are so impure; why else would you think of relations between a man and a woman? Could it be you have inappropriate thoughts about me?"

"Pfft! You could almost be my dad, what would I desire about you?"

"I don’t have the ability to have a daughter as grown as you. Aren’t you making clothes? Why don’t you hurry up?"

What days are these? It’s no good to speak the truth, does that annoy you?

Jiang Xinyu briskly left the west room, to be honest, Wei Kaiyun’s temper still scared her.

Sitting on the kang (heated brick bed), she pulled out the army green fabric, preparing to make a uniform; it should look quite nice.

She looked down at her chest; there was already some shape, it seemed there was still room to grow.

She knew her own size, and with a flat ruler and chalk, she started drawing on the fabric.

Compared to winter clothes, it was slimmer, but the length needed to be let out. She thought she was now slightly taller than Wang Ailing, and those daily milk didn’t go to waste.

Once the pattern was drawn, she started cutting, as Wei Kaiyun pulled aside the curtain and came in.

He’d only been in once before; this little girl was quite clean, and the room looked comfortable.

He ignored Jiang Xinyu sitting on the kang and took off his shoes, lying on the bedding. It felt quite comfortable; he really knew how to enjoy life.

After lying down for a while, he pulled down a pillow and smelled a hint of floral scent. Was this what a woman’s scent was?

Jiang Xinyu finished cutting, looking at Wei Kaiyun lying in her spot and wanted to poke him with a needle, he didn’t even consider the feelings of a young girl.

He even used her pillow, the more she looked, the angrier she got, simply turning away from him to sew the fabric edges.

This task was the most tedious, but if you didn’t sew the edges, it’d fray easily, and wouldn’t be durable at all.

Wei Kaiyun watched the little girl turn her back in anger, a smile appeared on his face.

Softheartedness was good, it meant less trouble for him, he was only afraid if she were truly unyielding.

Looking at the little girl’s back, she seemed so small, why was he interested in this girl? He thought he should get her some good food to keep her healthy and plump.

Thinking about the meeting at the provincial capital at the month’s end, he decided to take her along. She was young and couldn’t resist temptation, and if someone tricked her away, it’d be troublesome.

After a while, Wei Kaiyun really fell asleep.

Jiang Xinyu heard steady breathing behind her, turned and saw he was really asleep. In this cold weather, wouldn’t he catch a cold sleeping like this? Having no choice, she quietly got up and draped her coat over him.

With the edge of the pants sewn up, she looked at the time and figured she should start cooking, put down her needle and thread, and got off the kang.

After Jiang Xinyu went outside, Wei Kaiyun opened his eyes, smiled, tugged the coat, closed his eyes, and continued lying there.

Being taken care of was really nice; if later in life marriage was like this, he was quite willing.

The water boiled, she added the rice, because today Old Yang would come to eat too, so she added more rice.

After scooping out some, she ladled out the rice soup, rinsed the pot, and put in a bowl of stewed backbones. Once they melted, she added water and put in seaweed. She placed a steamer on the pot to steam rice. Just keep it on low heat.

She peeled a head of garlic, made three-ingredient oil, and squeezed a bowl of chili oil; she cut half the face of a pig head and two sections of sausage.

She took out a cabbage, mixed the core for salad, and chopped the stalks into chunks for the pot.

Everything was prepared, it was already half-past eleven, when she heard a knock and ran to open the door.

"Master Yang, you sure are lucky, I just finished."

"Haha, too much trouble for you. Here’s some fish. Tomorrow, on the second day of the second lunar month, I’ll have to come over again for a meal, shall we eat fish?"

"I’m planning to eat dumplings tomorrow. Lamb and radish ones."

"Okay, that’s even better. Save the fish for later."

"Let’s eat them tonight. Braised fish with pancakes."

As they talked, they entered the house, "Where’s Xiao Wei?"

"He’s sleeping, I’ll go wake him."

"Old Yang is here?" Wei Kaiyun lifted the curtain, coming out from the east room.

"Yeah, I’m quite hungry, is it time to eat?" Old Yang, feeling a bit awkward, quickly changed the topic.

A large enamel basin’s worth of stewed seaweed was entirely consumed. The sausage, pig head meat, and cabbage core salad were also finished. Three people’s eating capacity was indeed impressive.

After the meal, the two left together, Jiang Xinyu finally breathed a sigh of relief, truly being alone for so long, suddenly having people around her felt uncomfortable.

They arrived at Old Yang’s courtyard, sat down to drink tea, "So? You made up your mind?"

"How did you know?" Wei Kaiyun raised his eyebrows to ask.

"I could tell, someone like you wouldn’t just sleep in a young girl’s room unless you were sure. Did you tell her?"

"Tell her what? She’s still young. I’ll wait a while longer to tell her."

"Haha. You don’t dare to tell her?"

Wei Kaiyun glared at Old Yang. "Stop talking nonsense. I’m afraid if I tell her, she’ll avoid me. I’ll wait till we’re more familiar with each other. She’s still not of marriageable age."

"Xiao Wei, you could get engaged; that way, no one would gossip."

"That’s a good idea."

"Haha, you’ve truly fallen for her. Before, when someone lay in your bed, you weren’t moved."

"That was different."

Old Yang sighed, "It is different, I don’t have your good fortune."

"You could have good fortune too."

Old Yang shook his head, "I deal with unsightly matters, I’m afraid of implicating others."

"Why don’t you step down?"

"I’m thinking about it. I’ve talked with those above, and they’re probably sending someone to replace me. I just want to live peacefully."

"You’re leaving?"

"Yes, I want to live a solid life in a place where no one knows me."

Wei Kaiyun admired Old Yang’s courage. Not everyone can leave behind wealth and glory. In reality, he and Old Yang were the same, just working for others. The risks weren’t small.

"If you retire, I have to plan my future too."

"I know, but can you retire now?"

"I can’t fully retire, just move to the second line."
