Chapter 70: 70 Gain insight

"I’m just here to look around and learn; I don’t feel like I’m lacking anything."

The two arrived at Old Yang’s yard. "Let’s walk over there."

Old Yang led the way for about half an hour. Jiang Xinyu was unfamiliar with the town, but she knew they were heading east.

Suddenly, the shine of a flashlight flickered over them. Old Yang coughed twice.

"Brother Yang, what brings you here today?" The young gatekeeper greeted Old Yang with a smile.

"Just came to see if there’s anything good."

"There are quality goods today, Brother Yang, you’ll certainly like them."

The three entered the yard, and Old Yang led them directly into a warehouse-like building.

"Little girl, tell me if you like anything. I have some connections."

"Okay."

Inside, although it wasn’t brightly lit, the items on the stalls were clearly visible.

Jiang Xinyu felt like Granny Liu entering the Grand View Garden; the items on display weren’t particularly precious, but the atmosphere intrigued her and piqued her curiosity.

There was a decent crowd, and transactions were occurring. Jiang Xinyu walked around but didn’t find anything she wanted; she was purely curious.

"Nothing you want to buy?"

"No, I’m just here to broaden my horizons. I’m curious, why isn’t there any grain?"

"There’s no grain even in the city’s black market," Old Yang explained to Jiang Xinyu.

"Master Yang, what’s the price for cornmeal on the black market now?"

"Interested in selling?"

"Just asking, I still owe the leader three hundred bucks," Jiang Xinyu whispered to Old Yang.

"Haha, ordinary cornmeal is going for one and a half, premium for one and eight."

"The price is quite high."

"Rice and white flour have already reached five, but not many can afford it. Wealthy folks are scarce in our town."

"Master Yang, how about I sell a hundred pounds of rice?"

"Are you going personally?"

"If someone helps, I can take less, considering they shouldn’t take risks for nothing."

"I can find someone to sell it in the city, but the maximum you’ll get is four."

"Alright, I feel uneasy being in debt. But the rice isn’t of great quality; it’s been three years, definitely not moldy."

"Where is it?"

"At my place, I brought it over last time."

"Little girl, if you really want to sell grain, I think you should discuss it with Xiao Wei."

Why discuss with him? Jiang Xinyu’s eyes showed that was her thought.

Wei Kaiyun was right behind them, so he heard their conversation.

"Xiao Jiang. If you want to sell, sell it to me. I’ll give you four."

"Leader, that’s not appropriate."

"What’s inappropriate? It can’t be discussed here; we’ll talk when we get back."

"Master Yang, I’ve seen everything; there’s nothing I want to buy."

"Alright, let’s go to one last place and see what quality goods are available."

Old Yang led the way into a partitioned room.

There were guards outside, but seeing Old Yang, they let them in without a word.

"I was wondering what it was. This is indeed high-quality stuff."

Jiang Xinyu walked behind Old Yang, blocking her view. On hearing Old Yang, she turned to look, realizing it was lamb. The scent outside was too strong, so she hadn’t recognized it initially upon entering.

"Brother Yang, name your price?"

"This isn’t under my purview. If it’s suitable, I’ll take some; if not, leave it to others."

A gentleman with glasses approached, "Old Yang. The lamb’s three per pound?"

"Old Xing named a price; I have no objections. Whoever wants it—if there’s leftover, it’s mine."

The seller stood silently; he hoped for four per pound but no one asked him. He understood the rules here, so accepted reluctantly.

"Old Yang, everyone can take three pounds. You want the rest?"

"The lamb weighs sixty pounds. You ten want thirty? Quality goods like this aren’t easy to come by."

"Old Yang, we don’t have your wealth. We also need to figure out ways to exchange for grain; just thinking to treat the elderly and kids."

The seller felt relieved, thankful he didn’t refuse earlier. If he didn’t manage to sell the lamb, high prices wouldn’t matter; he eagerly watched Old Yang.

"Boss, how much for the lamb bones? And the offal?"

"Brother Yang, you set the price."

"I won’t shortchange you—five for the offal, including the head, three for the bones. I’ll take the remaining lamb after they buy."

"Old Yang, I’d like the offal too," Old Xing pushed his glasses awkwardly.

"Alright, it’s yours. But I’ll take ten pounds of lamb."

Now, no one in the room spoke. The lamb would cost a hundred bucks for the remainder; who could afford that?

The seller was nearly in tears; the lamb came from the brigade, and the village head feared they couldn’t keep feeding it, so instructed him to deliver it to the co-op. He took a risk to make a bit more, but if it didn’t sell, it’d be trouble.

"Fine, as such, I won’t take the offal, Old Yang, it’s yours. I lack your wealth."

"Everyone can have the offal, bones; only if none of you want, it’s mine. We adhere to the rules, and I offer prices to you."

Jiang Xinyu listened behind Old Yang, admiring his confidence. He seemed a character, absent from novels, was there an unforeseen event?

Present folks quickly shook their heads; no point being tempted by trivial gains which they must surpass monetarily.

Giving Old Yang half a carcass, with ten pounds left for them, remaining one pound, weighed with half a carcass, totalling thirty-three pounds two ounces.

Old Yang pulled cash from his inner pocket and counted out one hundred and seven dollars and sixty cents for the seller, not short a cent.

Wei Kaiyun carried the offal and bones, Old Yang carried lamb, said their goodbyes, and left.

During this event, Wei Kaiyun hadn’t spoken a word, and Jiang Xinyu played mute, realizing the ten present were hard to deal with and somewhat resembled the mafia.

The three exited the yard, no one spoke, hastily heading home.

Arriving at Old Yang’s yard gate, "Little girl, all this is for you to process; we’ll eat."

"Old Yang, I’ll split the cost and give you fifty-eight."

"Alright, decided then," Old Yang didn’t refuse.

"Master Yang, how will the lamb be prepared?"

"You cook, your choice."

"Let’s have hotpot, cook the offal directly, reserve the broth, and stew the tougher cuts."

"Okay, I’ll take them back."

Both placed the lamb in the living room, then left, as it was getting late.

Jiang Xinyu, too excited, couldn’t sleep. She washed the lamb once, cut it into small pieces, and froze it outside.
