Chapter 68: 68 knows

"Haha, Secretary Jiang, you think too much. I’m just curious."

"We come from the same village, but we’re not particularly close."

"From what you know about her, do you think she’s telling the truth?"

Jiang Xinyu shook her head, "We’re not very familiar with each other, so I can’t make a conclusion."

"Director Pan, let’s go back and report to Director Wei first. When Zhao Zhongshuo comes by, someone will get us."

The two of them went into Wei Kaiyun’s office, and Jiang Xinyu handed over the testimonies of Kong Mengjie and Zhao Zhongshuo to him, while Qian Jun also handed over Lai Zhiqiang’s testimony.

Wei Kaiyun read through everything from start to finish.

Qian Jun began to explain, "Lai Zhiqiang is too tight-lipped; we couldn’t get anything out of him."

"Once it’s proven that this has nothing to do with Zhao Zhongshuo or Kong Mengjie, send Lai Zhiqiang directly to the police station."

"Yes."

The two of them left Wei Kaiyun’s office. "Secretary Jiang, take a break first. You’ll need to take minutes later."

"Okay." Jiang Xinyu lay on her desk, burying her face in her arms.

She felt a slight sense of disappointment. This matter definitely had nothing to do with Kong Mengjie.

She had originally imagined adding some fuel to Kong Mengjie’s fire, but her aura was too strong, and Xinyu felt powerless; it was simply impossible. After half an hour, someone from the security department came over, and Qian Jun and his colleague went along again.

Zhao Zhongshuo did indeed return all the defective goods, and showed quite a proper attitude, leaving Qian Jun with no temper.

"Alright, go back to work. A decision on what to do with these fabrics will be made later at the meeting; wait for the notice."

The two went to see Wei Kaiyun again.

"Director Wei, should Lai Zhiqiang be sent away today?"

"Yes, immediately. Go to the police station and find a way to get them to pry out the truth."

"Understood, I’ll go right away." Qian Jun understood what going to the police station implied.

After Qian Jun left, Wei Kaiyun looked at Jiang Xinyu, "Secretary Jiang, have a seat, let’s talk."

"Director Wei, is there something you want to ask?"

"You should know what I want to ask, right?"

Jiang Xinyu shook her head, "I don’t know."

Wei Kaiyun chuckled, "Secretary Jiang, I’d like to hear your opinion on this matter."

"Personally, I don’t think this has anything to do with Kong Mengjie. As for Zhao Zhongshuo, I’m not certain."

"Why do you think that?"

"Just a feeling. From what I know about Kong Mengjie, she wouldn’t sacrifice the big picture for small gains."

"I see your point. Go to the union and have them discuss the issue of punishment for Zhao Zhongshuo and Kong Mengjie, and whether the defective goods should be returned to Zhao Zhongshuo."

"Yes."

Jiang Xinyu found Lu Changchun and explained the matter to him. "Director Wei’s idea is for the union to discuss punishment for the two of them, and whether the goods should be returned."

"Understood, we’ll have a meeting to discuss it. Does Secretary Jiang want to join us?"

"Sorry, Chairman Lu, I have other work to attend to." They’re not in the same department; she wouldn’t consider herself important there.

On the way back to her office, Jiang Xinyu ran into Kong Mengjie.

"Xinyu, I’m a bit scared."

"Don’t worry, you haven’t done anything wrong, there’s nothing to fear."

Kong Mengjie felt reassured after hearing this, said a couple more things, and then left.

Watching Mengjie’s graceful and elegant figure, Jiang Xinyu genuinely felt that she truly had the aura of a protagonist; his psychological resilience, her beautiful silhouette. Even she was drawn in.

Looking at the time, it was almost time to clock out. Hopefully, there wouldn’t be any overtime.

Wei Kaiyun stood by the window, watching Jiang Xinyu return.

"Director Wei, the union has been notified."

"Alright, you can leave work now. Tonight, I want to have some seaweed."

"Understood, boss." Just a foodie. At least there’s no overtime, which is the best thing.

Jiang Xinyu returned home, lit the stove, then started a fire to steam the yams, planning spun yam cakes filled with dough for dinner, and pork backbone with seaweed in the pot.

Though the room wasn’t cold, she kept detecting a smell of gas, so she opened the window to ventilate.

After the yams steamed, Jiang Xinyu put them in the courtyard so they could cool faster.

It wasn’t until seven-thirty that Wei Kaiyun arrived. Jiang Xinyu also pressed out a bowl of chili oil, and the factory director ate heartily, sweating profusely and thoroughly enjoying it.

"These cakes are quite fluffy, they don’t scratch the throat."

"I mixed the dough with yams, they nourish the spleen and kidneys, brought from my hometown."

"Oh, you’ve got quite a collection of good stuff."

"As long as it’s edible, I’m willing to collect it. Isn’t it nice to have it available now?"

"Jiang Xinyu, do you think I’ll end up in prison within the next ten years, and will it be because of a woman?"

Intrigued by his dream of Kong Mengjie, he studied her, purposefully viewing her on her first day at work, and although she’s more innocent now than in the dream, he recognized her completely as the same person.

Jiang Xinyu rolled her eyes, "How would I know? I’m not the type who can tell the future with mysterious calculations."

"You’re not being honest."

"Nobody likes hearing the truth."

"Alright, I’m heading back. Tomorrow’s Saturday, I want dumplings, do we still have any meat?"

"Yes, there’s still some from when Master Yang brought it over last time."

"Great, can they be juicy?"

"They can be." He was almost as greedy as she was.

"Jiang Xinyu, what do you want to eat?"

"I can eat anything; whatever the boss wants, just let me know."

"Okay, tomorrow, let’s go check out the black market with Old Yang."

"Director Wei, boss, can you take me to see it too?"

Jiang Xinyu silently thought, mentioning the black market wasn’t just for nothing; you wanted me to beg you to take me, right? "Director Wei, I’m just a country bumpkin wanting to see the big city life."

Wei Kaiyun, hearing her words, laughed so wide his eyes crinkled. "Alright, I’ll take you to see it, but you have to promise me that you won’t go there alone."

"I promise." Playing both sides against the middle was something she excelled at.

"Tomorrow morning I’ll come over for breakfast. We’ll head out afterwards."

Jiang Xinyu had long anticipated the black market, although she had no intention to sell grain, she was eager to learn about market prices.

The next morning’s breakfast was flatbread, which in her previous life she’d spent ten yuan on for fifteen pieces, made quickly using a griddle, and even daringly added an egg.

Wei Kaiyun truly thought it was a delightful surprise; he hadn’t eaten white bread for a long time. However, the portions were small. Luckily there was yam porridge, which Jiang Xinyu had simmered in a clay pot; it was especially thick.

"Let’s go find Old Yang; it’s best not to ride a bicycle, it’s too new."

A new one is a sin, huh. "Then how should I get there?"

"We’ll go find Old Yang; he will arrange it."

"Boss, is the black market far?"

"It’s not close."

"Boss, what do they sell over there?"

"Jiang Xinyu, can’t you think a bit? What good things could there possibly be at this time?"

"Oh? Then where did Old Yang get the soybean oil and pork from?"
