Chapter 169 Return to the Door

Chapter 169: 169 Return to the Door

"You’re doing better than me as the daughter.

Xinyu, the twists you made are really delicious, everyone in the dorm is craving them."

"Haha, of course, they’re good things, naturally delicious."

The two rode their bikes side by side, chatting and laughing. "Xinyu, a girl from our dorm introduced me to someone. Do you think I should go see him?"

"You can go have a look. Who knows, maybe he’s the one for you."

"She said he works at the police station, a retired soldier, twenty-four this year, much older than me, and I’m not too willing."

Jiang Xinyu chuckled dryly. She found someone twelve years older than herself, destiny sealed by an older man, forever missing out on young heartthrobs.

"Are you going to see him?"

"I’ll go see him. I like good-looking people."

"Sis, what’s your standard for good-looking?"

"A big square face and a strong build."

"Alright! My sister’s aesthetic is really impressive."

"Haha, it’s surely better than a pretty boy, right? People often say pretty boys have no good intentions."

"Sis, if you say that, you’ll probably get beaten up. What do you have against pretty boys?"

"Haha, I feel pressured when a man is too handsome. You see, isn’t today a prime example?"

"Haha, you’re overthinking. Even after marriage, life needs managing. We won’t be unlucky enough to meet a scumbag."

"Xinyu, hasn’t anyone introduced someone to you?"

Jiang Xinyu felt awkward; indeed, no one had introduced her to anyone.

"Sis, do you think I’m too unattractive? Why has no one introduced someone to me?"

"You’re prettier than me; you’re almost at Kong Mengjie’s level."

"Really?"

"Why would I lie to you? When have I ever spoken nonsense?"

"Haha, I love hearing my sister talk." Jiang Xinyu felt healed.

The two laughed and chatted as they entered the village at ten o’clock, both already sweating.

"Xinyu, come to my house first. Yours hasn’t had the fire going for so long. We’re sweating now; let’s not catch a cold."

"Alright, I’ve never met Xiao Long’s sister-in-law yet."

"My sister-in-law is nice. Let’s go."

At the entrance, the two got off their bikes and pushed them inside.

"Mom, we’re back."

"Oh, Xinyu is back too, quickly come inside, your forehead is all sweaty."

"Auntie, this is food we brought for you, keep it."

"Mom, these are twists and bread, so tasty."

"You’re always getting Xinyu’s good stuff for free to eat."

"Haha, that’s because everything Xinyu makes is delicious."

A woman with a pregnant belly stood at the entrance. She seemed quite amiable, not exceptionally beautiful but looked kind.

"Is this Xiao Long’s sister-in-law? I’m Jiang Xinyu."

"Xinyu, I know you, just never had the chance to see you. Quick, come inside and sit, it’s warm inside."

"You two go in, I’ll go brew some tea for you."

The three went inside and took off their shoes to sit on the bed. After sitting for a while, Jiang Xinyu took off her coat.

Sun Ermei brought in two bowls, looking at the sticky tea-colored liquid inside.

"Cai Feng, wait a moment; there’s a bowl for you outside too."

"Xinyu, hurry up and drink. Usually, my mom wouldn’t spare the tea for me. It’s delicious with twists."

Sun Ermei glared at her daughter, utterly helpless. With such a temper, how on earth would she find a good husband in the future?

"Right, give sister-in-law a taste; it’s delicious with the creamy twists."

"You three eat. You won’t get much at the Kong Family’s later."

"Auntie, you should try it too."

"You three eat." They all knew food was scarce these days and weren’t picky.

Jiang Xinyu only ate one twist before stopping, as these were to be given away, eating too much wouldn’t be good.

It was almost eleven o’clock when the sound of firecrackers erupted, so the two quickly dressed and went to the Kong Family.

"Wouldn’t it be bad if we arrive so late?" Wang Ailing seemed a bit apprehensive.

"It’s good that we managed to come back. Cycling took two hours."

The two entered the Kong Family, where there were more than ten tables in the yard, but nothing on them yet.

"Xinyu, Ailing, you two are here? Quickly get on the bed." Tian Shulan greeted them with a smile.

"Director Tian, you don’t need to be so courteous; we’re going to see Kong Mengjie."

Before entering, they saw Huang Hongwei in a new outfit.

The three greeted each other since they were coworkers. Huang Hongwei was particularly warm.

Kong Mengjie also came out from the room, inviting them inside.

"How did you two come back?"

"We rode bikes back; taking a bus is too time-consuming. I have to work tomorrow."

"When does Director Jiang go back to work?"

"Director Huang, my holiday ends on the sixteenth of January."

"Then you can stay home for a good New Year."

"Yes, Kong Mengjie, Director Huang, wishing you two a happy marriage and early blessings of a son.

We’ll head back in a while; it’s not safe on the road late at night."

"Xinyu, you two should wait a bit, dinner will start soon. Eating won’t take long." f .r e\ewebnov(e)(l).c om

"Alright, we’ll eat and leave."

The yard got busier and louder, and many people came to see the newlyweds.

The two said goodbye and left.

"Zhou Lihong came too?" Wang Ailing whispered to Jiang Xinyu.

"Everyone from the village should be here. It’d be strange if she didn’t come."

"She did come," Wang Ailing said softly.

"Zhou Lihong, did you come for the wedding feast too?" Jiang Xinyu greeted first.

"Yes, did you two come back as well?"

"Yes, you look pretty good."

"Still alright, living off my own hands, but I still want to thank you."

Jiang Xinyu waved her hand, "I care about the two little ones. You’re a very responsible sister."

"What can I do if I’m not responsible? Alright, I’m going over there to wait for the meal." Zhou Lihong said, turning to leave. If it weren’t for running into Jiang Xinyu, she wouldn’t have come over. When she was most in need, only Jiang Xinyu, whom she had disregarded, reached out to help her, while her close friends avoided her — that’s human nature.

"Xinyu, Zhou Lihong has changed a lot."

"After going through things, not changing would be strange. Sis, when will the banquet start? It’s too cold standing here in the yard."

"Wait a bit; my mom will bring over a bowl soon. The food’s probably like cafeteria meals."

"If you won’t eat, we’ll take it back home; I can’t eat it. It’s hard to switch from indulgence to frugality."

Wang Ailing shared the sentiment; she couldn’t stomach home-cooked meals after getting used to the meals from the textile factory’s cafeteria.

In a corner of the yard were five large pots, now all uncovered, emitting a bitter aroma.

"Sis, we’ll take ours home. I’m not eating."

"Yes, my mom should arrive soon."

Just as she spoke, a joyful shout echoed from the gate, "Deming, you’re back! Why didn’t you give a heads-up?"
