Chapter 394: Chapter 403: The Stepmother Arrives
He didn’t care whether the room was occupied or not. Even if it was, so what? This place was his home, and he was determined. Only a fool would give this Siheyuan to that idiot Qin Yang. This Siheyuan was the capital to become wealthy. Once he had this Siheyuan, he could have whatever he wanted.
He slipped the watch onto his wrist. Tsk, perfect fit. He couldn’t help but open the wardrobe again—all inside were men’s clothes, white shirts, suit pants, suits, and T-shirts, which all seemed new.
He sniffed his own clothes; they reeked. Without a second thought, he stripped off his clothes and changed into the new ones. They were a bit large, but by tucking them into his pants and cinching them with a belt, they actually looked pretty good. There was a mirror on top of the wardrobe. He admired himself in the mirror for a long time. These clothes suited him so well. Not bad, he liked them.
Initially, he wanted to look for other things. But he’d just got off the train and was so tired that he didn’t continue searching. Instead, he just lay down and fell asleep. After all, a monk can run away, but the temple won’t run with him. The whole Siheyuan would be his alone eventually.
He thought and smiled. Before long, he was dreaming and snoring soundly.
As for Hu Li outside, she was rummaging through things here and there. She wasn’t sleeping now, still waiting for Granny Lu to cook for her. Of course, she only dared to wander around the front yard. There was a dog locked in the back. Although it was locked up now, what if it got out? She was still afraid of being bitten by the dog.
She plopped down at the stone table and slapped the table.
"Old hag, get me a glass of water. Can’t you see I’m thirsty?"
Granny Lu was always timid and had decided to wait for the return of Qin Xiangyang and his siblings, so she didn’t argue with Hu Li. Coming out of the kitchen, she carried a jug and poured a glass of water for Hu Li.
Hu Li’s fox-like eyes kept glancing at Granny Lu.
"Old hag, bring out the family’s money. I don’t believe you don’t have any here. Isn’t it true that you’ve taken the Qin Family’s money? Now that I’m here, naturally I’m in charge. Hand over the money quickly." She reached out her hand to Granny Lu for money.
Granny Lu had been selling lotus leaf pancakes for several years. She knew roughly how much she made in a year—probably not less than thirty or forty thousand. Those who could afford such a big Siheyuan couldn’t be poor. Over the years, they had been doing business. Aunt Hua in the village had even built a small western-style building, becoming one of the wealthiest families in the village. She built three houses alone, one for each son. Such extravagance was undeniable. She couldn’t believe Granny Lu didn’t have any money. Without money, what would the two kids eat, drink, or go to school with, especially attending university?
Granny Lu frowned. Everything was negotiable except for money matters. The money was saved for her two grandchildren. She might be softhearted but not stupid. Money in Hu Li’s hands would be like throwing a meat bun to a dog—gone without return.
"Give me the money," Hu Li was getting impatient and hungry for the money. Today, she must strip Granny Lu of all she had. Money was only real when held in her own hands.
"No money," Granny Lu put the water jug down and turned to walk back into the kitchen.
Hearing there was no money, Hu Li’s face turned green. "Old hag, you actually tell me there’s no money?" Okay, no money, she sneered. If she didn’t make them hand over the money today, she wouldn’t be Hu Li.
Qin Xiangnuan came home late today because she had more classes, so she only returned now.
But as soon as she entered, something felt off, though she couldn’t say exactly what. She felt uncomfortable inside, like the oppressive and suffocating air before it rained, all weighing on her chest.
How strange. Usually at this time, Conghua would know she’s home and come wagging its tail at her. Why was it sleeping today, or had Granny Lu locked it up?
The door was open, so Granny Lu should have come back. Jian Zhiqing would be at work today and not likely at home. Even if he were, now wasn’t the time for sleep. The man’s life was regimented; he’d only sleep at this time if he had been working overtime for too long.
But lately, there haven’t been any mentions of him working overtime, so it couldn’t have been him.
Who could it be?
Sounds of movement came from the kitchen.
"Granny," she called out to Granny Lu, which was odd. Usually, at this time, Granny Lu should have gone to the shop. Why was she still in the kitchen?
"Nuannuan, you’re back."
Granny Lu emerged from the kitchen, her clothes reeking of cooking fumes and seeming quite busy.
Granny, what delicious food are you making in the kitchen? Qin Xiangnuan placed her schoolbag on the stone table and rushed into the kitchen, thinking that perhaps Granny Lu had prepared a grand meal for them. But as she entered, she saw a pile of unwashed pots and dishes.
"Granny, who is here?"
She frowned slightly, automatically rolling up her sleeves to start working, feeling a bit discomforted at the sight of so many bowls and plates. It must have been enough for quite a few people, and she wondered why no one had come in to help wash them or something similar.
"Ah..." Granny Lu sighed.
"Nuannuan, your sister is here."
"Sister?" Qin Xiangnuan was initially confused. Sister? Where did she get a sister from? She only had a brother; her mother had given birth to just the two of them. If one spoke of a sister, there was one person, but that person never acknowledged her as a sister, and she had never thought of recognizing that sister either.
Suddenly, the plate in her hands fell into the sink with a clang, startling Granny Lu.
Granny Lu’s face did not look very good—there was a helpless resignation mixed with sighs and an indescribable feeling of suffocation.
Qin Xiangnuan reached into the sink to retrieve the bowl and continued to wash with her head bowed.
"Granny, have they arrived?"
Qin Xiangnuan was actually quite sure it was those contemptible members of the Qin family who had come—a lifetime’s bond of being inseparable in death and life. Destiny can be so strange; no matter how long you try to avoid it, your friends and enemies will ultimately have a day when they come back to you.
Granny Lu shook her head and sighed again, "Nuannuan, after all, she’s your stepmother. Not to mention Qin Mingfei, Qin Xiangmei is indeed your sister."
Sister? Qin Xiangnuan’s lips curled into a cold smile, almost tinged with a hint of bloodthirstiness.
What sister did she have? If she said this so-called sister had bullied her all her life, stolen her luck, her life, and mercilessly taken her heart for her own son’s use, then tell me, what kind of sister is that? Who can acknowledge her, who can bear it, who would want her—I’ll give her away.
